Which sort of charger for the golf !!, and anything i should and should do when charging ?, been updating the RNS and looks like i have left the thing turned on to long ?

trouble is the car wont start so i cant go to Halfords LOL, so i got a cheapo one for now from wilkos to get me going, although it seems that now we have warmed up a bit i hve just got it to turn over, so im giving it a charge and hopefully it will be ok, ps the red goes on the red terminl and from what i remember the black goes on the chassis somewhere ?

Yes that's correct. Look for a good earth on the chassis 
Perhaps leave over night to get a good charge into it.

yeh im leaving it for a good while  , thanks for the advice, when im up and running i will get a decent one, just never had the need for one before as my cars have always been new

I use a CTEK 3200 charger / conditioner. As the car is used infrequently I leave it connected to this pretty much 24/7.
You'll probably need to mail order one of these so no use for now. Definitely recommend this as a long term proposition though

2nd.  for the CTEK - my car sits for two/three weeks sometimes; that can be long enough to 'weaken' the battery (The Kenwood DNX7200 (top bit of kit BTW) I think was inexpertly fitted by some Nottingham 'cowboy Audio Specialists' from whom I bought it and there's a small constant battery drain - that's the price you can pay for battering the price down )

The CTEK sorts this out fine and will also charge a discharged battery overnight - as mine's an 'oiler' it obviously needs a fair bit of 'kick' to fire it up

Ok, cheers, for illness reasons my car has been left on the drive for nearly 2 weeks then i have been updating the sat nav (maps and firmware) which resulted in the nav being left on for 4 hours too LOL, so hopefully i wont need anything again but i may just invest in one of those

Once the car is mobile I would have your battery condition checked. A battery should be able to hold a charge for a couple of months if it and the charging system are in good order. Our Ed 30 can sit unused for anything upto 3 months and will still fire first crank  I thought the GTi had a system that will turn off radio etc if it senses battery charge is low?

yes it does until you dont let it LOL, i also had to leave it with ignition on for quite a while, perhaps it wasnt to keen on that either ?

Unless you use a smart charger like the CTEK one, I would disconnect the negative pole pf the battery to the car  and connect the charger directly on the pos and neg terminals of the battery. This may avoid you from damaging your alternator.

yeh, i have done that now, got a little confused by it all lol, i had all car cables disconnected from the start, just wasnt sure where to put the negative lol

I've also got the Kenwood DNX7200 but don't get any drain at all as far as i'm aware. I'd get them to check it out.
