Are DMF issues common with the GTI?

The DMF is usually replaced alongside a new clutch, but isn't absolutely necessary. I think this is where some of the confusion/myth lies between failed DMF's and replacing healthy DMF's for the sake of it.

I'm sure the was a LUK recall on the DMF for the Golf, but it might have been diesels. It's a common fault on diesel Focus' too, hence why I ask. Mind you, my heart is set on a DSG, so slightly different set-up on those I imagine.

from 08 onwards a Sachs clutch replaced the LUK item apparantly

Wouldn't say common issues, they only seem to fail when running mega power or being stupid as I was.... Luckily managed to get mine replaced under warranty.

Tell me more ..... I'm on a maintainence package and still under warranty ... how fdid you wangle it ?

Well basically I'm still to this day convinced it was a matter of when not if it'd go. I was at the pod  1st run, 3k's and just let go. No prior signs of slipping and I'm not one for sitting in car parks lighting the tyres up either so guess its just the luck of the draw.

I took it in and simply said i put my foot down from a junction and it let go. I had to wait a couple of weeks for the clutch pack, release bearing and DMF came into stock as it was a new design or something.

I phoned VWR day before yesterday as I'm so fed up with watching the revs fly after 2000k in 4th, 5th and 6th - gonna see if VW will fit a clutch under my maintainence package first and if not go for the VWR disc only - Matt @ VWR quoted £366.08 for the disc only but strongly advised that I buy the cover too - £420, think budget dictates it'll be the disc only - intend to purchase in January.

Does the clutch slip every journey, every day or just occassionally??

Again ditto, driving home along the M5 I thought to myself accelerating from 2500rpm, is this clutch slipping - that was February - been getting significantly worse since then.  It's now December and 20000k later it is slipping like a slippy thing in slippyville !

I was under the impression that VW won't warranty clutches passed 6000 miles hmmmmm, I take it your clutch actually give up on you with no drive at all ? Mine has been slipping and gradually getting worse - problem is when I flash my car back to "stock" (from bluefined) it doesn't slip at all - not a bit - so obviously I take it back to the dealer and they say there is no slip quoting "our master tech has taken it out and it's not slipping at all   "  OFCOURSE IT'S NOT WHILST THE MAP IS OFF !!!!

Anyway, just don't know what to do - hoping VW will just change it as I've been complaining of it ever since on every return to the dealers. 

Do I just buy the clutch disk or do I buy the cover as well - hopefully VW will replace it under my fixed cost maintenance plan.

Mine completely gave up the go, flywheel and clutch were pretty much friction welded together so they told me when I picked the car up from them. I had to be towed back from the pod and again to the dealer which was something I don't wish to be doing again lol 

It helped that the dealer I took it to was quite understanding. I'd just keep pushing it dude and get vw customer care involved.

Thought as much - they'd be pretty much duty bound to do it given the circumstances you stated, pulling out of a junction - legitimate as it gets.  I will keep pressing them - paying £80 a month in a maintenance package ! They bloody well should do it !!

kinda expected mine to go a long time ago but hasnt .....

gareth, if you can take a risk just deliberately slip it until it slips in stock mode and take it in   
but youd have to be sure they fitted new DMF too.

Been considering this - how does it continually slipping ruin the DMF ? Do you guys think I could get away with just buying the clutch disk and not bothering with the plate ?

£1800 is a big dent out of the house deposit fund - enough probably to get my strung up by my finger nails !! !!!

The only way your going to know if anything is fooked is to get the box out and take it from
there and if vw take the box out they will see the clutch dust and the marks it will have left as it only takes Vwr under an hour to rip the box out. Just get it booked in with Mat at Vwr and get it done and then Forget about it

Guys, does anyone know the part cost of an oem clutch and the labour time to replace it? Also what access would the garage have to the cambelt during this job as it could cut labour costs having it done at the same time??
