Right looking at replacing my alloys to an 18x8 et42. What tyres would be best to run for best grip & handling size wise? 235/40?

Also I am looking at R1R's as I want that chunky sidewall/track look would 235/40 give me that also?

R1-R is a very good choice (like Yokohama AD08, Kumho KU36 and the likes)
if you don't want a real semi-slick.

I'd go for the 235. But there will be an issue with the ET42. It will cause rub.
So better go for ET50 and there's more space for the 235/40.

The wheels are speedline turinis & only come in ET42, I thought that would be fine to fine a 235/40 as my mate had them fitted & didnt stick out too far

If you like give it an try but think of real tyre sizes.
These are different from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Semi-slicks tend to be wider than street tyres.

Jake/Danish-GTI has Toyo R1-R. You better ask him about
the real width an fitting on a Golf. Look at the manufacturer's
data as well. I guess most 235 semis are 240 - 244 mm wide.

Or just go for 225/40.  :drinking:

Tyre size calculator link
That is a handy link, thanks.  :happy2:

recommended tyre per width
I don't agree with this one though.  I'm looking at the 9.0 inch wide rim - and both Toyo and Michelin say you can go up to 275 width - wheras that site says a max of 265.

Federal 595 RS-R

Has anyone had any experience of these tyres?

They are a semi-slick road legal tyre and was wondering what people's thoughts were on them.

The reviews I've seen are all good, but there aren't that many reviews out there.

Thoughts and comments also welcome :happy2:

Well Hurdy, the Federal 595 RS-R are NOT semislicks. These are "extreme" performance tires (same as Michelin PS3, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric, etc).
The semislicks Federal make are FZ-201 or FZ-202.

Does not compute - the PS3s, whilst being a v.good tyre, are NOT an "extreme" performance tyre.

Maybe that was a typo, and you meant Michelin PSS.  :happy2:

I have the 595 RS-R and would not buy them again.
They have slicing issues. I may add some pics later but if you try
a Google search you'll see what I mean.

ps:
Rex, they are not UHP like PS3. They belong to the group ''between''.
Same as R1-R oder AD08. Just cheaper (and worse in quality).

I guess I'll have to see for myself as I've ordered some to see what they are like. All the reviews I've seen on them (not many!) have said that they are as good as R888's in the dry and BETTER in the wet.

They do say that they aren't a cold weather tyre, so they will go under the house where they will stay above 5oC until the spring arrives......around July!!

Oh and the reason I chose them was that I could get them at the OEM size for the Polo of 215/40/17.

The only other trackday tyre in this size is the Yokohama AD08.

Sorry guys, but the naming "Ultra High Performance" or "Max Performance" or "Extreme performance" has a different meaning for each of us. And every site has a different interpretation. In the link below Federal say "extreme". Anyway, that's not the point.... The point is that they are NOT semislicks  :drinking:
Hurdy here's the link I looked at: http://www.federaltire.com/en/html/pdetail.php?DB=motosports&pdline=3&ID=3

Cheers Rex :happy2:

That was one of the sites I looked at that helped me make my decision.

Bruce - I have done a couple of Google searches but cannot find anything that relates to the slicing issue your's have suffered. Could you point me in the right direction please. Ta.
