Just found out today that the GTi is only 16v. The mk4s were 20v.

Why the drop in valves??

More valves doesn't neccessarily mean more power or efficiency.

Whatever the reason, I'm glad the TFSI was developed. It's twice the engine any bland 1.8T ever was.

I quite like my old 1.8t.
I didn't 'dislike' mine, but pound for pound what the 2.0T does with a k03 is a different league. From stock the TFSI feels responsive and sharp. Can't say that about the AGU I had. Even mapped.

I quite like my old 1.8t.

It wasn't a bad engine by any means. All comes down to personal preference.

Certainly not a bad engine. Plenty of power to be had with a k04. But I just found them lacking a bit of soul.

Saying that, mine was an early k03 engine, so hardly the pick of the bunch. I went round Oulton Park in the Shark Performance mk1 Octavia (BAM, anti-lag mapping etc) and that thing pulled hard.

But compared to the performance of a k04 TFSI it's a different game completely.

Just found out today that the GTi is only 16v. The mk4s were 20v.

Why the drop in valves??

They needed to make room for the fuel injector - which, on FSI engines, squirts directly into the combustion chamber.  It is akin to a twin spark head - only instead of two spark plugs per combustion chamber, you have one plug and one injector.
