Standard GTi is very quiet
« on: June 24, 2015, 11:49:33 am »
Hello all just bought myself this...

It's rather quiet with the standard exhaust, I could get a stainless, or I once had a car with a K&N cone on it which sounded deep and meaty.

I'd prefer not to get a cone which sucks all the warm air from the engine bay, anyone know if a sports panel filter will do the job? Or if you can mod the airbox?

Sports panel filter is more than enough for the standard turbo, a full cold air induction kit kills low end torque and makes town driving a bit more of a pain. A stage 1 ECU remap as well will help you get the most from your engine, in both power and economy.

Exhaust options really are between Milltek and BCS on here, either system is good (the BCS system has higher favour among people on here) but either will give you a bit more noise and liven up the engine further.

Welcome to the slippery, dark world of modifying. It's a long journey ahead...

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

It's very addicting and sometimes painful but in the end it brings a very big smile everytime we have to drive.

I love how quiet my GTi is

Sometimes I hear the modded ST's around here and do think I should get the car sounding like that but motorway journey's i'd prefer quieter!

Off topic, but does your car have a cover over the headlights? They look different to me

Looks like the oem headlight protectors to me - when I first bought my GTi I was looking for covers for my xenons and can only find these with the silver bits and put me off so opted to stay cover free

Not sure if they are worth this much but here's a eBay link:

Yes mate headlight protectors, I took them off last night, looks much better without!

I might have to go for a remap and a stainless, also ones the tyres are worn ill get the 18" Gti alloys

I noticed my ED30 was very quiet too as standard, but that was me coming from a very modded mkiv with quite a burbly K04 turbo.
I've had a Milltek non-res exhaust fitted from the cat back - it is just enough to give the car some note, without being loud, IMHO.
I still plan to fit the Milltek DP (as that gives the engine more power, whereas the cat-back is just noise), but think that makes it a fair bit loud, especially with a non res rear, so may fit a rear resonated box at that point.

BCS get a great write up on here - they have active systems that I hadn't known about or considered when I bought the Milltek for mine.

Enjoy your mk5 - it gets expensive if you let it!
