9Jx19 ET52 - What width of tyres?

Have managed to find some OEM Audi alloys that were too good to miss out on.

They are not ideal as they are 9" wide and the car needs to be driveable as a daily. (Seat Leon)

Will also have to fit thin spacers to the front to clear the struts, maybe the same at the back to even things out.

There are some 235's available to me at a fair price, and believe they are safe to fit a 9J wheel but am concerned they will catch. 225's will give better clearance but will they go on a 9" wheel?

Are 225's safe to put on 9" wheels and will they grip the road as well when stretched?

Am prepared to remove the odd screw and a little plastic to eliminate rubbing and will be using Eibach Sportlines.

The tyres that are on at the moment are 265's but they were 255's when the wheels left the showroom on the car.
My main question is how narrow a tyre can you put on a 9" wheel and will the tyres perform as well and be safe?

I have some 9.5x18 rears, ET46.  When I test fitted them, the inner edge of the rim was very close to the shock absorber and the plastic fuel filler neck.  Watch out for that!

I have 225/40s stretched on at the minute, I'd prefer 235s but they're expensive and I don't want to buy a pair and find that they hit the filler neck.

225's on a 9" alloy will be a bit of a stretch and the sidewalls will be under extra pressure. Running stretch directly affects the load ability of the wheel. The bigger the stretch, the more pressure is on the sidewall. 225's are basically 9" wide so although they will be stretched they should still be safe. Performance in the wet maybe a little more hairy though!!!

I could try a pair of the 235's for the price of fitting them so thats probably the best option for now.
Am not going for the stretched look on purpose but these wheels are a must-do so am having to find the best all round solution which is practical as the car has to handle well and not rub under normal driving.

235's first it is then
225's if there are rubbing issues

I ordered 225/40's when sorting out my VZ's(et 44 8J), and unwittingly got a slightly stretched look.  I will fit 235/40's in future.

The 235's  I can try are on 8.5" wheels at the moment and dont look stretched at all so should be just OK on the new 9" wheels.
They are Michelin Pilot Sports and measure exactly 235mm

i went for 225 on my 8x19 and imo , they are slightly too narrow 235 would have been better i would nt put 225 on any thing wider than 8" rim

I went for the 235 35 19 Michelin PS2's
There is a slight stretch but nothing major.
The ride is also very good which surprised me. The sidewalls of the PS2's are really soft so will have to be carefull of the potholes

Am really happy with the wheels so i thought I'd put a picture up

This is with a 10mm spacer to clear the front struts
Have just ordered some 6mm spacers so they sit a little more snugly in the arches, the 10mm's can then go on the back

I went for the 235 35 19 Michelin PS2's
There is a slight stretch but nothing major.

Are they the ones that sit in the bolt hole as well?
They didnt come with centrecaps but i couldnt complain as they were a steal
I was going to get some seat ones to sit just in the centres but if the audi one's you have are the ones I'm thinking of I'm interested
