MKV TDI turbwoes
« on: June 28, 2015, 05:01:15 pm »
Right, I know there is a wealth of information on turbo problems here and elsewhere, but for my own sanity I'm needing to just vent my chain of events in the hope that I can get some good advice. Got a TDI, but problems seem common for the age range.

MKv 2006 2.0 TDI sport - Issue is - Whining turbo, engine light & code P0234 (which went off the other day btw...), occasional limp mode, lagging power.
when I say lagging power, I mean at lower gears there is like a delay after pressing the accelerator until the 'power' kicks in.

Had it a year, bought it with a whining turbo (I was clueless..), had limp mode within the first week. The place I got it somehow fixed the limp mode but the whine persisted, they said nothing we can do for that. I enjoyed several months of fine but whiny driving.

Around February this year, the intercooler pipe blew off. Got that fixed by a garage, had amazing power for about a week then back to limp mode when I went on the motorway. Lagging power and still whining, but drivable.

Went on a weekend trip last month and then the limp mode was back with a vengeance this time with an engine light and code p0234 turbo/super charger  overboost condition.

Went to a german car specialist garage in town, the owner said I have a sticking wastegate and suggested a full turbo replacement. My customer experience with this guy was soured with his unprofessional attitude and they scraped my rims which they half fixed badly for free. Not sure this garage is reliable.
In december it was at VW for a callback steering sensor replacement and they noted the whining and mentioned a faulty oil feed pipe.

At the weekend my Uncle and I got the car on axle stands to have a look for and start assessing it ourselves via guides on the internet but he thought it would be a can of worms once we got under the car and started pulling sh*t apart, plus we live in different towns. He has a garage and tools, I dont..

Anyone had a similar experience and know what this most likely is, a new turbo/new wastegate needed or just turbo internals cleaned/repaired?

Thanks for reading golf fans.

Usually the veins in the turbo get clogged up and you can take the turbo apart and get cleaned out or sent the turbo away of which midland turbo are good at oem turbos, don't forget to put a new oil feed and change the oil and filter.

For my money an exchange turbo is the way forward but if you like a bit sport this is the job you need to undertake http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/guide-how-to-remove-turbo-and-clean-sticky-vane-which-causes-overboost.149599/
Either way you go it's not a job without its moments and you need a comprehensive selection of tools.

good tutorial thread there. I read this link here for getting a turbo out a GTI but it involves removing the top of the engine... Hayes manual says remove from bottom meaning taking the drive shaft off and suspension arm(?).
Either way, my car is parked in a outside residential car park and I've not got many tools. I could maybe do the turbo cleaning myself if I could get it out!
I got quoted a refurb turbo for just less than £500, an amount I annoyingly need for other things at the mo :/ . Anyone ever paid a garage to get their turbo out and then sent away for a clean?

I replaced my turbo without removing driveshaft. I removed down pipe and did it through the gap there, although is awkward.
You'll need a set of remote hose clip pliers to get the clip of the turbo to remove intake hose.

As already said, new oil feed pipe too.

Mine was whining for ages (2 years) which I lived with but limp mode (overboost) started getting more frequent, at which point I swapped the turbo out.

Mine been whining for the last 2 years also, but always strong. On Christmas Eve travelling to spend it with the family i went WOT for like 15m, an injector gave out and melted a piston, seized it and fed the turbo some internals...

Ooof, that sounds nasty, thats the thing i'm worried about is that i've been lucky enough so far and at some point something is going to give out and create a larger problem.

jason, that sounds doable, did you follow a guide for that or just figure it out yourself. I'm going to try and see if I can use the underground parking at my work to get it out myself.

Reviving my old thread.
I've had to keep postponing this, but I got told by a reputable garage very quickly the wastegate was seized. So the first german specialist guy i went to was correct, even though his customer service was lousy.

I'm getting quoted £858 for an after market refurbed turbo + labour + oil/filter change. They say they replace my turbo with a refurbed turbo, my one gets sent away and its value is deducted on the replacement. The quoted price is about £450 for turbo, the remainder on labour. Does that sound right for a refurb turbo with my old one used as a discount?

Cheers

I think that a turbo change is around 4-5 hours labour on these engines, subframe needs to come off in some cases if you get it from underneath on the 2.0's from memory.

bear that in mind when working out

Although it was on my Leon, I didn't remove the subframe to replace the turbo. Much easier with a ramp though.
