Just bought a GTI, a few questions...
« on: July 03, 2015, 11:00:00 am »
Hi just picked up my GTI last night, spent all evening driving it around! Great car, and I keep discovering things I like about it!

I have a few questions

Its due a service, use genuine bits and oil? Do all the filers and plugs too?
Diverter has been done, but no sign of PCV?
Cam belt & water pump was done 34000 miles ago but also 5 years ago, is it due again?
Air con doesnt work, I assume compressor, is there an easy way to check?
Front wings are rusty, should I contact the local dealer to see if its covered under warranty?
The full beam headlights seem ridiculously high as in they point upwards and light up the trees, simple case of alignment?
Bit of a rumble from the rear I think its wheel bearings.

Finally I plan to freshen a few bits up, chrome switches, cherry hazards, the bloody door handles look like they have been attacked, wheel centres, bolt covers, wipers, LED interior, and the important seat badges!

Anything else I should check? The rear tyres are worn on the inner edge, hope it can wait until I lower it then get a proper alignment done.

Maybe a remap next year too  :happy2:

Thanks

I personally like to use original stuff mate when it comes down to service / maintenance and yes, I would give it a full service including all filters and plugs...at least in that way you know its done and start to concentrate on other bits  :pomppomp:

In regards to the PCV, theres a few threads on here of how to test whether your PCV is on its way out! The old dipstick/oil cap removal on a running engine etc

Cambelt/Water pump - erm abit of tough 1, only done 34000 miles in 5 years isnt allot is it but wouldnt like to advise you on this  :signLOL: I probably would change it if im honest!! More from an 'owners' point of you...

Dont have a clue with the aircon as I dont have aircon in mine  :ashamed:

Rusty wings - yes definately get in touch with dealers providing that you car isnt older then 10 years (I think its 6 years warranty from dealers, and further 3 years with another company)

Headlights - Should be a simple, case of alignment

Hope this helps  :happy2:

Checked the PCV today think it needs replacing. Noticed there wasn't any gas in the aircon and the compressor seemed to be spinning so hopefully it's just the valve, I'm going to gas it next week.

Going to give it a full service with filters and plugs next week too, plus do the timing belt.

Then a few little cosmetic details, before I think about lowering and a remap.

Been driving along today thinking how awesome these cars are!

Are the Chinese eBay ones any good? Also what about the door handles?

The haz switch I bought of eBay from China was genuine. The cig lighter I bought from China was also genuine. Grab handles are from UK. I am still waiting on buttons and headlight switch.

£3000 is a good price. I paid that for my last one cat C repaired, it's actually on eBay now! And the one I've just bought was £2000 although it's hpi clear and one of the best 05 ones I've seen it needed an engine.
