HPFP Noise
« on: July 06, 2015, 03:45:56 pm »
We all know the TFSI engines have a tapping noise from the HPFP area.

I recently listened to a 2008 GTI the noise was much quieter than on my car.

History

The follower when i purchased the car

Cam Lobe.

Cam lobe after a bit of a polish

New follower at 2000 km

The follower at 5000km/1 year

Is there anything that would cause the noise to be louder? Faulty hpfp pump/spring or cam lobe??
In the last service i changed the oil pickup pipe and switched to millers nano drive so i'm hoping next service the follower looks better.

Before i DIY the intake cam.  :scared:
I'd like to try switching out my HPFP. Does anyone have a spare HPFP they can loan me? (i will cover the shipping) If it solves the noise i will gladly buy it.

I don't really want to fork out on a new pump chasing a noise which is probably normal.

I've also read that the n80 purge valve can make a noise but from the videos i've seen its much easier to spot.

That's interesting. I wonder if mine isn't right either.

I replaced my cam follower a couple of months ago and what I noticed is that there is an intermitant ticking that comes and goes around the HPFP area. I would say that 80% of the time it is ticking away and then it goes completely silent for a few seconds and returns again. Does this sound right?!

I've always thought the noise is coming from the timing chain. The TFSI do tend to sound like diesels on tick over though

Thanks mate that doesn't look to bad providing i don't snap the bolt holding the adjustor like last time. The cam in that link looks really fooked mine has the newer cam.

I touched the N80 valve and it made a different noise. I will try replacing this first.

I've always thought the noise is coming from the timing chain. The TFSI do tend to sound like diesels on tick over though
I've already replaced the cam chain, tensioner and adjustor this got rid of the diesel noise this is a tapping noise and i don't think its the injectors. May be the follower hitting the lobe as it does seem to be wearing quicker than others i have seen.

The pump drive lobe doesn't look too clever tbh, which could be eating the coating off your followers.

After 8,000 miles with a Loba pump, there was no wear at all on the coating when I checked it.  I only mention Loba as it's stiffer spring puts more pressure on the follower / drive lobe.

How about i give u a £75 deposit? If i'm being paranoid and the pump makes no difference i will return it and you can take the shipping charge from the deposit?

The lobe is on my todo list. I recently listened to a 2008 gti with 80,000 km it was way quieter than mine. I keep homing in on a noise from the HPFP area. (not the chain diesel noise)
I've ordered a new purge valve which can be noisy but mine is throwing no errors.

@olethalb been looking again at your cam swap in the audi. What i posted earlier is wrong the adjustor is not removed you just slip the chain off after you have removed the cam box? I felt confident replacing the chain when the cams were locked. Any special tools needed to replace the cam?
