Gear shift bushing replacement
« on: July 14, 2015, 10:27:15 pm »
Hi all. Does anyone know of a how-to guide on replacing the shift lever bushing on a mkv gti. Have managed to get the old bushing off, with some force but now I'm unable to get the pivot part protruding from the ball back into the metal hole on the left. It's just millimetres away from slotting in and that's even without the bushing on. So at the moment I'm left with what you can see in the pic. Is there a knack to getting that yellow bit back into place? Thanks!

If you have a pry bar use that to gently pry the bracket to the left. Don't be too heavy handed though as it will eventually bend (like mine did!)

So i'm not missing some other technique to getting it back in then?!  It seemed like there was no other way to get the bushing off without that piece coming out.  I'll give it a go and see what happens.  I presume there's no way to take that metal bracket on the left off?

Just for anyone else's future reference. Had a go at this again tonight and realised I'd missed a clip (shown below) that was holding the bracket in. If you slip this off (while carefully holding with another finger or it'll drop into the abyss) then the bracket will move over to the left allowing you to slip the ball joint pivot into place. Albeit a lot of force is still required to pry it back slightly. To be honest this turned out to be a pita job for what was very little difference in the play on the gear lever. I reckoned it would firm up the wobble but didn't by much. Forge short shifter to fit next!

You could but it might be a nightmare putting it back on with all the springs and associated gubbins it holds. Looking at the diagram it's an M5 hex bolt that holds it in. Access will be very tight and awkward unless you remove the centre console. I personally would use a pry bar.

Strange, I didn't see your post above! That's good to know you found another way. My experience is the same as you. I couldn't really notice any difference at all. The pivot that you unclipped the bracket from has plastic sleeves in there as well so these probably get worn down as well over time. Does yours have any play there? I can move the bracket left and right a few mm's at the pivot point, is yours the same?

You can test by grabbing both ends of the pivot (the clip end and bracket end) and moving it side to side.

I have the bush to fit on mine but couldn't really see how to get at it. Going to leave it until I service car next month to get sorted. Could you let us know if the short shift totally cures the problem.
