Time for some new brakes

Hi Guys

Brakes are getting a bit worn on on the mk5 gti now and was just going to buy some Apec ones front and rear but before I do didnt know if anyone has fitted any bigger ones, I think some people fit r32 ones but think you need to change the calipers as well, Is this right ?

Just preparing for our Nurburg Trip.

Hi,

You have to change calipers, carriers, discs, pads, brake lines, heat shields (optional).

Consider a good condition 4 piston kit used for the front with some light weight discs. The front setup for the S3/R32 is massively heavy. Rear S3 brakes will give you a vented disc opposed to a solid one.

...and a 41mm pot. The S3 rear pot is 41mm compared to 38mm for Gti.

I wouldn't use the 312's at the ring, that's like using a carrier bag as a parachute.

Try to get some decent 4pots as above but if not then some R32 fronts with decent discs and pads should do a good enough job.

Brilliant analogy!!!

But yeah even heavier R32s would be miles better. As much as the 'unsprung weight' argument is entirely valid, you can't overlook the fact that R32 brakes would make a trip to the Ring a fair bit safer than 312s..!

Thanks for the posts guys I wont be setting any record laps, just going for a trip with a load of mates, Im a little confused, I want to keep the standard calipers what disks do I buy ? lol  :happy2:

I don't think there's a bigger disc you can use with standard calipers. And even if there was it'd be pointless when a good condition R32 setup would be a few pennies more.

Don't be the guy that discovers fade on 312s at 100+. Record laps or not it'll happen.
