Deep noise at low speed
« on: July 13, 2015, 10:51:43 pm »
Noticed this a few times now, mainly just after a bit of a thrash, lift off the throttle, maybe 35-40mph 5th/6th...

Sounds like a subwoofer at really low pitch, almost subsonic. The sort of deep noise that makes your eardrums flutter.

Any ideas? It's a weird one!!

Any accompanying vibration?  Sunroof open as mine makes that exact noise at that speed?

Now you mention it, I may well have had the sunroof open on these occasions. No vibration as such.

It's almost like an air pressure thing. So I'm wondering if the sun roof being open plays a part. Turbulence..?

Yup!  It's a well known issue on the MK5!  Next time you get the thrumming noise, crack the roof back a notch or two and / or drop the window a bit, if the noise goes, there's your issue!

The MK4 had a lovely notched wind deflector to kill the turbulence, but for some strange reason VW fitted a plain one on the MK5.  I did post a thread on here ages ago if anyone had attempted to fit a MK4 deflector to a MK5 but it drew a blank.

Brilliant, thanks for the clarification!

At least I know it's 'normal'.

Moor hassle than they're worth sometimes, them sunroofs.  As well as the annoying thrumming noise, mine rattles like buggery when fully open.  Can I be bothered to drop the headlining to sort it? Erm, no!
