remarkably brave and heroic to save his fellow crew members from death whilst suffering severe injuries in the process.

I guess the horrible irony of war (and its inherent barbaric nature) is that the horrific injuries he suffered in the process of heroism were actually intended to be doled out on a mass basis to the Japanese soldiers below....

I'm not anti-war but war sure is crazy.
