Buying a MK5 GT TDi
« on: July 20, 2015, 07:45:31 pm »
My sister is looking to get herself a MK5 GT TDi. Having only owned a GTi I only know the things to look out for the petrol engine, so I am wondering if there is anything that we need to be careful of.

Should we be looking at the 140 or 170? What're common faults, and rough price point?

She has found this one, but I can't tell much from it.

Any help at all will be much appreciated, and I know you guys know your stuff. :D

The 170 had a recall on the injectors and loom,On this year you will have missed the problems with the crap turbo and cylinder heads been porous,Check for cam belt done and rattle on idle from duel mass

As Andy said, on the 170's there was a recall on the injectors and loom. I would like to think they would have all been done by now though as it was a good 3 yrs ago. If she is only doing short journeys, I would probably stick with the 140 and the 170's suffer from DPF issues. DPF's were never fitted to the 140's as standard.

Apart from that and the general MK5 stuff, service history, cambelt change etc nothing really springs to mind.

I think the one in the advert will be a 140. Generally the 170's had the twin chrome tail pipes. Best way to check, will be the engine code on the sticker in the boot or service book. BKD is 140, BMN is 170  :happy2:

The advert says 140 in the performance specs :p

I have a 56 plate 170, the only issue I've had so far is a hesitation/judder in lower gears when going around town/traffic (~1.8k-2kish RPM), which I think was finally fixed by blanking the EGR.
The 140 will remap to 160-170 and has a smaller turbo, but the 170 will remap to 200-205 ish and has a bigger turbo.
Downside to the 170 is the DPF, but as long as the car gets a good blast at 3kRPM+ for 10-15mins each week or two it's not an issue.
