@david25 How did you get 404 miles out of tank? Best I have done is 370 miles and I was bored stiff!!

I tried getting the best mileage I could when I first got the GTI, then got bored and was much happier with my 31 mpg on motorways at 90 I mean 70

For that tank

  • Only 5% town driving
  • Half the trips were very early morning
  • New spark plugs, PVC and diverter
  • Super unleaded
  • Correct tyre pressures
  • Only 17" wheels the standard ones are about 1Kg lighter compared to Monza Shadows
  • Bluemotion undertray

Iirc my best was around 64 mpg on a late night run back from work (40 mile trip no motorways) but in day to day scenarios I tend to see 48 to 54 mpg to work n back.

My previous car a Chevrolet SUV was doing about 30 to the gal, that just about crippled me so it had to go, then I found the little beauty below. It says its a 140 GTs, but I'm not sure if its not been played with if you get me  :happy2:

I'd love a fully kitted out GTD but unless I get a company car or a mahoooosive pay rise that'll continue to be a pipe dream.

I get low 20's from Ed30 stage 2+ but mpg Does not bother me in the slightest with 360 horses I'm not going to get good fueling.

Ive had 46 and 13 all from the 2+ Mistress. Have a guess which was boring as f*ck and which wasn't. Worth a few quid extra in fuel IMHO.

Buy a diesel if you are bothered about such things.

Don't think the point is about saving fuel mate
Think its more about what the great Mk5 Gti is capable of if needed
Again all part of the GTI's all round appeal or as Clarkson said all things to all men
I personally quite often have my 1 year old daughter in back of car with me so that's when the better mpg is quite rewarding on a booring reserved drive

I own/drive a Gti because it's a great car not because I like to hoon it round everywhere! Hence why after 13 years driving ive still got a clean licence and never been involved in any accidents (touch wood) :driver:

My record fuel economy is 44.0 mpg on V Power driving 40-50mph on A roads.  Standard is 20-30 mpg around towns, 35-40 on motorways depending on speed but lower in winter.

Was going to get a picture but forgot but after reading this topic last week I thought I would check what MPG i was getting to work.

I drive around 24 miles on mainly A roads and 50 mile and hour limit so with roundabout and so forth I am probably averaging around 30ish miles an hour but do accelarate hard away from lights etc.

When checked this morning i was getting 36.6mpg  :happy2:

I only ever once got less than 400 miles to a tank on my GTI

I'm getting 720+ on my Scirocco now. And running 14s 1/4 miles.

720+....  WTAF..! I'm in the wrong car...... :congrats:

Seriously the tdi guys can try convince themselves otherwise with maps and big torque figures along with mpg etc but it still never be a Gti, never drive or sound like a Gti
Gearbox and drivability in my Gti compared to wifes tdi is simply in a different league, so smooth and driveable, 6th gear 30mph foot down and your off, 4th gear 20mph foot down and your off to 120mph thats 100mph range in one gear   :driver:

Indeed mate
With driving both regularly I really do get a good comparison of the 2
Gt tdi is superb for lots of reasons but the Gti is just that little bit more special particularly when you have had a stressed day

Better not go down that road. Diesel can be smooth and have long gears.  Bluemotion's 5th gear is longer than GTI's 6th gear.
If you upgrade your wife's TDI it can also be pleasant to drive. You won't have the same exhaust note but you get the mpg.

Performance wise Jay's Scirocco is better than any stock GTI but it's easier for a GTI to improve. He now has a bit of the best of both worlds.

I've had and driven a fair share of fast diesels in the past and although they are great for long journeys, I feel that is the only thing going for them.

Most 4 cylinder diesels sound like white vans with no character at all and the small powerband is frustrating when you are trying to make quick progress. Although a DSG gearbox in a diesel makes a lot of sense.

If I was doing 20000+ miles a year I would get a diesel but anything lower and I would definately be sticking with a petrol.

I would even have an R32 over a GTI if I could afford the added expense but I'm a thoroughbred petrolhead afterall  :happy2:
