DSG Ed30 GTI has died... any idea why?
« on: July 26, 2015, 07:35:34 pm »
Hello,

My beautiful red 07 reg Edition 30 has finally encountered its first serious problem after 7 years of careful ownership! I'm really hoping somebody might have some advice before I phone up VW :scared:

Driving along and the red power steering light came on, managed to pull in somewhere safe as the drive cut out and the gear numbers all began flashing. Restarted fine, and no warning lights so tried to move again but 50 metres later several warning lights came on (power steering, esp), three loud pings, and dash told us to 'STOP!' as drive cut out again. Suspected something electrical, and testing the voltage across battery showed it was low. Several bus journeys and a new battery later, she restarted with a few warning lights as expected, which began to go out as we drove leaving only the yellow airbag warning on. Made it a mile before dash lit up again (power steering, esp, oil, tyre pressure, airbag, maybe more), drive cut out, and several worded warnings as we cruised to a stop again. Checked battery and oil - both fine. Now can't restart.

Has anyone has this sort of experience or know what might've gone wrong?

Thanks in advance!

First set of symptoms reading through I thought it may have been alternator up the creek.

Maybe recheck battery voltage - should be 12v off and and 14ishV with engine running.

Would be worth checking all engine bay fuses and relays also

Sounds like you should get the alternator checked to me

Thanks for the suggestions - very worried it's going to be an expensive problem!

You might just be right about the alternator, as this all happened not long after we'd had stereo, lights and wipers on in heavy rain, windows steamed up as we entered car park, so we turned blowers on full blast (sadly air con out of gas so they were on for a while). Not noticed any odd noises or burning smell either before or during though. Will check the belt if I can figure out where to find it!

Does anyone have any recs for recovery or a specialist garage to have a look at it in SW London? Although, we're not planning on keeping it long term - at this age is it still worth maintaining the full VWSH?

Thanks!

Belt looks fine, and managed to get her started to check the voltage across the battery while running (14.4V) so looks like it's not the alternator :(

Check fuses and relays.

And might be handy to get a vagcom scan done too.

Going to check the fuses and attempt the relays this evening, but not got access to vagcom/vcds scanner so she's going into VW on Friday for that and any other necessary diagnostics. Will report back on the findings! Not what we need when I'm 7 1/2 months pregnant...

It'll be your rack dude, get it scanned and go from there.

My rack is knocking like a bad 'un at the minute and no warning lights or anything....  Does that warning only pop up when a certain part of it dies?

I had my alternator pulley pack up on my old mk4 and that threw up all sorts of warnings until the pulley itself snapped off...  It all looked in tact  at a glance but the belt was slipping on the pulley which wasn't obvious at first..  So could be that?

A new rack for the mk5 gti is £1200

Thanks all for your suggestions

This is what VW have said:
"we have done diagnosis and found 29 faults in 13 control units, fault traced to j533 gateway water contaminated advise replacement  j533 and re-pin multi plug."

I've read that faults in multiple control modules points to the gateway, but I'm a bit worried there's more going on and their fix might not solve the whole problem.

Does anyone know if a problem with that gateway would cause all the symptoms described, including the loss of drive?

That's an easy and not that expensive fix. You just need to know really well what modules your Golf has to activate them and get the new CAN-BUS Gateway properly coded. Eddie-NL can source and code you a new CAN. :happy2:
