MOT Fail
« on: August 07, 2015, 12:50:59 pm »
Hi All,

Not MK5 specific but with all the knowledge on here I though I would find the answer.

I have just had the Wife's car in for a No Pass No Pay MOT and it has failed on 1 thing being the that there is play in the offside suspansion ball joint as they expplain it. It is a Fiat 500 by the way.

Firstly I am not sure what sort of cost to fix this would involve which I will need to know. However we are getting rid of the car back to the Finance Company so do not want to spend anything on it apart from giving it an MOT so we dont get charged for them having to hire a truck  to pick it up.

So what I am wondering is I could book this in for another MOT elsewhere on the off chance they dont uncover this issue and I get a pass. However as it has been tested elsehwere will that be on the system somewhere that the new MOT place could pick up?

if it's been picked up it's likely pretty worn, if you've ever seen a car at the side of the road that looks like it's run over it's own front wheel it's probably due to ball joint failure, i have an unhealthy fear of this and always make sure they are in tip top condition.

mot testers always check condition of steering / suspension joints (unlikely it would get missed)

Nice one cheers,

So my options are book it in at somewhere like halfords, wait for them to pick up the fault and then and hoping they dont find any others that the 1st MOT didnt and then wait to see how much they will charge for the repair. Or take it to a Local garage and see what they would quote for the repair before taking it for MOT again

So just rang the finance comany and they advise they could use a truck to pick it up but the charge would likely be in the region of £130-150.

Looking at it I am going to be paying £35 for an MOT straight away. Also lets say it take an hour to fix the suspension issue then at best another £40 hourly charge for labour. So this leaves between £60-80 for the part which I would imagine it would be a tleast this so may work out more to put it through an MOT.

You usually have 2 weeks to get it repiared and take back to same MOT testing station for a retest - likely they will only look at the item that failed for the re-test.
If MOT garage can't do repiar, then you could get it done at say Halfords and take back to same testing centre.

Its probably not to bad of a job when I went to pick up my car from my mechanic last night after having it serviced he was on doing an offside 02 Mercedes sprinter ball joint and it took him 20min max and cost the customer £60 all in
