I'm pretty sure there wasn't a facelift, some subtle differences between years but no facelift

Just some interior materials were improved and some minor changes in the electronics components since the MY2006 versions. So the MY2004 and MY2005 are worse, I think.

If you're talking about the GT models, I believe the front bumper and grills were facelifted after 2005ish. I'm not sure about exact dates, but iirc I've only seen the GT models with the freshened front bumper and grills with 06'+ plates.
I can't remember if the 1.6fsi's were also face lifted, but I'm certain the 2.0 TDIs were.

The GTIs weren't face lifted I don't think.

The 1.9 tdi front bumper and grills remained the same throughout the MK5 platform.

Yeah, forgot about the GT front bumps. The GT Sport versions had the same front bumpers as the late GT models.

My Ed. 30 has DSG and closed side grills, not like the 1st versions that had an open grill to cool the DSG box. Mine has air ducts bellow for that purpose. It's just a minor update.

As said, there was no facelift, but a few things were cheapened through the mk5's life...
Main one I can think of visually is that the GTI lost the projector fogs for cheaper halogen lights.

Otherwise, it is mostly trim - the earliest mk5's had rubber inserts in the sunglasses holder, door pockets, a nice sliding cupholder cover with the ever useful bottle cap opener, etc. My later '08 car has none of this, but is easily changed if you care to...!
