Do your pipes run under the rear of the car or just to the gearbox area? The only way to minimise the smell is to run the piping under the car, anything else (engine bay, rear of gearbox, inner wing area etc.) and you will get a horrid smell in traffic/low speeds through both the vents and with the windows open). It'll also make your engine sound a lot more 'tappety' from cold as you can hear directly in to the crankcase and camcover.
Either stick with the factory PCV or get the R-Tech kit (unless you make your own Vent-to-Atmos breather like i did)
A filter will not help with the smell in the slightest, they're designed to catch and stop oil splattering out of the top of a catch can, and some can be quite restrictive to the escaping gases, especially once saturated in oil
