has anyone px'd a mk5 gti lately
« on: August 09, 2015, 12:30:49 pm »
hi folks
as per title , after months of unsucessful  searching for a garage to carry out the dreaded chain repair i decided it was time to move it on , been looking at a few cars including alfa's , at around the sort of 7k mark , we have actually seen a few cars we like and were very taken on a bmw 530d sport on a 07 plate marked up at £6995 , the car was very tidy etc , so we tried to put a deal together .
the sales guy just had a walk around our mk5 and commented that it was one of the cleanest he had seen and no rusty wings , interior was commented on to as is also perfect , he never started or drove it.
so off to the office we went to put a deal together , his comment when he looked at the book price "i can do better than that as i can retail it without prep work " then came the hit , "seen as its so tidy i'll allow you £2750" , needless to say we were out of there pretty sharpish , on to the next dealer who had a nice mk6 golf gt tdi 170 again on at 7k , he also never started or drove it but again commented on the condition and mentioned he would have to get the very slight kerbing  sorted on one alloy , he then offered £2550
is this the general ball park these days ? , just for a laugh we tried a online quote from -"we rob any car.com, they come back with £2750 as well
kind of scary as when i was looking in February ones with 120k+ on and thread bare interiors and rusty wings were mid to high 4k  for 54 plates and 6 months later ones they are considering good on 06 plates are worth nearly half

I think you have to be mad or rich to P/X a car, you're just throwing away money for the sake of a few hours work, If you work out how many hours of effort it is to sell a car and how much extra you'd make you'll end up being paid £150+ per hour to sell your own car.

How comes you can't find a garage for the timing chain? I would have though any decent garage would be able to do it?

My local Vw dealer recently offered me 5,500 for my 57 plate minty Gti, still about 2k under value but not as harsh as your offers
We want any car offered me £5,700

Decided to keep car in end so was pointless anyway

to be honest i'd happily keep the car if i could get the jobs done but after visiting many specialists it seems nobody has the tooling or the only one i found that would had the equipment to do don't seem interested but heay ho such is life , i work away a lot and don't really want't all sorts turning up at the house when i'm not there .

the car is a 06 3dr  dsg tornado red heated cloth on 17"s  etc 116k on the clock , not mint but very very tidy hence why i brought it
love the car to bits and so does everyone i work with but i just haven't got the time to chase repairers around any more so head has to rule the heart
plus when i only usually get home once every 2 weeks or so her indoors is getting a little fed up with me spending hrs  driving around or phoning /emailing , so its car or divorce , if it was a mint mark one i'd choose divorce

Robbing fookers garages

I Never sell to dealers and very rarely buy from garages/dealers

Rather buy cash private sale

Where about's are you mate ?
I've just had the chain done on my gti it was the first thing I did when I brought it.
I got a local independent to do mine, but by all accounts it's quite a straight forward job.
Cost was £415.

He is in Shropshire iirc. As said before buddy, give Ant at AP Automotive a call in Telford.
His labour rate is a fraction of VW and he is really good at what he does. Just emailed him today to book my Golf in for a service, sort my sloppy gear shifts and retro fit cruise control.

i'm near telford Shropshire, i did try A P automotive and he had the car in to look at a couple of other issues , he commented on the chain and said it wasn't the worst he'd heard but unfortunately he to doesn't have the tooling to do it , and plus he ism't vat registered , which isn't an issue for me but it is for the warranty company who are going to be paying for it , Ant gets the thumbs up though , very knowledgeable and helpful guy

If you're getting the warranty company to pay for it, why not take it to VW?
