Post by: ashbignall on September 06, 2015, 08:21:31 pm
Mods so far:

VW Centre Caps
Interior Bright White LEDs
Number Plate LEDs
Plastidip Badges
Rear Badge Inserts
Mirror Puddle Light LEDs

Had the car for a couple of weeks, and although I've had a couple of problems, very pleased with it so far

Very nice pal - looks like it has been looked after aesthetically at least!
Nice alloys, Decent head unit, Highline with MFSW, Looks like HIDs and the cut out rear valance :)

May I ask what problems you've ran into?

Very tidy and a nice colour too! Welcome :) :drinking:

Thanks mate.

Couple of small things at the start like it was missing the NAV DVD but I bought a new one with 2015 maps installed which it would've needed anyway and the centre caps were knackered so I replaced all of those.

Although it came with FSH, I had no paperwork for the DSG service so I had that done. Before I had it done, when I was putting my foot down at higher speeds the car was a bit jumpy? No problem anymore.

Wanted the air con serviced but when regassed the guy found a split in the high pressure pipe so I've had that replaced.

Went to go on a drive and the car came up with engine fault and went into limp mode. Needed a new G450 sensor which I've also had replaced.

The car sometimes struggle to start when cold and the glow plug light has been coming on intermittently so I'm going to get those replaced ASAP too.

Nothing too major but a bit annoying  :happy2:

Touchwood it will be ok for a bit now... Ha

I'm hoping to take it to R-Tech for a remap in October or November; they gave me a quote for 290. Can't really afford it till then and also want a couple more months with the engine to get a feel for it in case anything else goes wrong.

It's got 103k on the clock and the cam belt shouldn't need changing till 150k miles which I'm pleased with.

I've thought about a new air filter/induction kit for noise purposes but other than that I'm open to ideas.

I'm a definite newbie to modding cars but looking forward to making a few more changes to this  :drinking:

The induction kit is a waste of money, the oem one is just fine

Like I say, if anyone does have some recommendations then I'm happy to hear them :happy2:

Welcome to the forum!

Well spec'd and looks well maintained.

For your engine a decat and a remap should be enough. If you want more you'll have to start spending a lot more.

Consider upgrading the suspension and brakes, then you can really enjoy your car on the twists. :driver:

Post by: Andy on September 08, 2015, 07:23:07 am
As above, get the car lowered which will transform the cars handling and will look better, also brakes of which the r32 up grade is popular then get a remap.Decat is the best way and better exhaust but a decat will now fail a mot unless you have a friendly mot tester.Have a look through my build thread for ideas

Thanks for the feedback.

I've done a little bit of research into the de-cat and still have a couple of questions.

What would the recommendation be on the de-cat? Would it be a full exhaust system upgrade or just a replacement of the down-pipe? What kind of product would be recommended? I understand Milltek have an excellent reputation but is also quite pricey.

On that note what kind of price would you be expecting to pay on:

a) Downpipe upgrade?
b) Full exhaust upgrade?

Many thanks

Also consider bcs  exhaust on here also

UPDATE: More problems: once again a exhaust sensor issue. This time G235 sensor; was G450 before. Best part of 400 quid spent simply on exhaust sensor problems in 2 months. Nightmare.

First attempts at some photo editing after a wash!

Thanks for the comments. I'm toying with a couple of different ideas at the moment:

Ed30 rear valance (no idea on price really? 200 quid?)
Colour coding rear valance I already have myself? Cheap...
Plastidipping all badges
Interior LEDs
Number plate LEDs

I've had to hold fire on remap because of $$$. Those exhaust sensors hurt :(. Checked with e-sure and they will want a further 135 quid for a 10-20% bhp increase if I install a remap too... I think 200bhp is about 17% increase on the 170? Not sure it would still be running 170 now, although it does have FSH

EDIT: Any thoughts on this? http://www.maxtondesign.co.uk/product/golf-v/rear-valance-vw-golf-v-gti-edition-30-with-1-exhaust-hole-for-gti-exhaust.html

Decided to have a go at repairing the slow puncture I had from one nail and one screw in my tyre... I can only assume that someone decided to try and plug the previous puncture with the screw.

Removed the screw and then made the hole a good size.

Prepared the plug.

Pushed it in.

Cut the excess away and added rubber cement.

Pumped back up.

Fingers crossed it will last...

I've also bought the interior LEDs, number plate LEDs, new rear wiper and the Plastidip. Should all be delivered mid-next week

It did need unlocking yeah, however the website that I gave you supplied the unlocking CD as well. It gave you all the instructions and I think the unlocking took about 20 minutes or so?

Haven't done it before mate but looks fairly straight forward. Push the mirror back toward the A pillar and the torx screw presents itself. Plug and play after that...

interested in the puddle light change myself - where did you pick yours up from? is it just a case of taking the torx out?

Very easy. As you say, just remove the torx screw. Plug n play.

So last weekend I made a start on repairing the deep scratches the car had prior to my purchase...

After many hours of prep work I began spraying to "fill the gap" and finished with a lacquer. Looks awful at the moment but I've left the paint to cure for a week now and will hopefully (weather permitting) be getting stuck into it again tomorrow.

Hi mate. Can you explain your process for the scratch repair? I have a deep scratch which appears white like yours, and assumed the only option is a respray of all four panels.

I'm following these instructions here:

Not guaranteed to be brilliant but I will give anything a go!
