Title: DBP Stage2+ Ed30 - Xenons Fitted!
Post by: SKAVIA on December 23, 2009, 06:20:04 pm
Hi all - thought I would finally put some pics up on this site as I'm at home with some time on my hands!
It's a great site and was good to meet some of you at the Surrey Rolling road earlier this month:
So here goes:
The car is a Pearl Black 2007 5 door Edition 30 - build No. 0142 on the plaque which we all petitioned for! :pomppomp:
I bought it brand new and the factory extras were Hi Line, iPod prep and MF wheel (from what I can remember!).
Here's how it looked when I got it:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FIMG_2967.jpg&hash=4598b7f8979aed3efa8f91320773d6bd056e407c)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FIMG_2969.jpg&hash=450823278057e33030974406aca031aec68933fe)
After joining the GTI forums, the mods slowly started!
First and easiest was the black front badge and lowering springs (bought off Joes GTI  :happy2:)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FRandom2076.jpg&hash=bdbbb595979fd8a169ef5c1f6465deca832e7b6f)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FRandom2081.jpg&hash=dd11fe2b75060c83e4df1cf20de67caabb3f06ae)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FRandom2079.jpg&hash=87421a8902c753b1aba2ca9c48c894da6ce4b379)

I thought the back looked a little skinny so added some 10mm eibach spacers...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FIMG_5231.jpg&hash=d593a5d4c0f11589e0edb623248f6326f0d26ff7)

After that is was the Revo Stage 1 and K&N panel filter (thanks to GazButMk5)
This totally changed what was quite a nice car to a rapid machine! Made 313 bhp on the rolling road at AmD which I thought was quite generous...
Made 293bhp just recently at the Surrey RR (running on 95 RON which I got seriously told off for!!! :ashamed:)

Next mod was changing the standard head unit for the Kenwood DNX 7200 (after some advice from Hurdy  :drinking:)
The unit is a touch screen double din unit with DVD player, Garmin-based Sat Nav, Full iPod control with video, bluetooth and reverse-camera input). It's also got dual zone so the back can play DVD or CD while I can have my iPod or Nav at the front...nice.
I fitted the reverse camera myself - just above the number plate - has infra red so works in the dark...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FIMG_6886.jpg&hash=b84011f20153fea40d2d9533a36cde97424858aa)
Also had the windows tinted all round - not too dark but just enough to protect the inside (and the baby!) from the sun...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FIMG_6884.jpg&hash=38f727145492cdf78ca12bab5d0059f040181d02)

After clocking up over 32,000 miles in the past few years, there really hasn't been many situations the GTI hasn't been able to handle: from safely ferrying the baby around with its ISOfix seats, carrying large loads with the seats down, to beating 996 Porsches in the rain (obviously not all at the same time!) :signLOL:

The wife also drives the car and had introduced the alloys to a few kerbs :fighting: so I had the wheels re-furbed recently.
Decided to change the colour at the same time to something a bit darker...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FP1030310.jpg&hash=21bd2ce4eec6a94d7abc28d0f18ae656aa6eb6b4)
I got the front splitter done in matte as well....
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FP1030316.jpg&hash=1b1e7153b19c0199fd827869dc853d68d486b5c8)
At some stage I also got the open front grills....!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FP1030309.jpg&hash=6ccaaa84c5d60bd33fedf5bf8551244cf1f398bd)
I de-badged the front and back and painted the rear badge black too...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FP1030305.jpg&hash=ed315954898cb878d9f03291065ee2b592d2c17d)
I'm happy with the car the way it is although I have just got a full set of S3 brakes and a WALK kit which will be going on in the new year  .
Future mods will probably include a quiet performance exhaust, filter and HPFP, stage 2 map....oh and a quickshift kit, dogbone insert.....maybe some coilovers....
Hope you like the car.... :xmassmiley:

And... ferrari

Thanks! Not sure what colour it is - I chose it off a colour chart with a million other greys on there!
I got it done in Matte as I was after a stealthy look - made sure I got a pot of touch up as well as I haven't got around to buying the wife another car
The Ferrari is tucked up for winter - not sure how long I can keep it with the baby now     :sad1:
2007 was a good year for cars!  :jumpmove:

Some nice changes there Skavia, nice to meet you at surrey.

Its difficult to gauge what grey comes out in a colour chart.

i should know, have a set of Pescara's in a different shade also.

Must admit, prefer the look of the GTi and badges on the front grill more so.

Have a great xmas

steve

Cheers Steve - was great to meet you too (and Phylis!).
Know exactly what you mean about the grey - in end it was just a rough guess as to how it would look as the colours look so different in natural light and with different laquers - I'm happy with the final outcome though
Badgeless took me a while to get used to - looked empty at first but now used to it and my stealthy look! Soon to be added to with black S3 calipers all round. May just get the VW Racing Badge on there off DaveB to add some subtle red.
Debadging also helps avoiding the boy racers when carrying precious cargo  :innocent:.
Oh and also nice to surprise them when a 'normal' golf leaves them in the distance

I haven't tried tbh - I think the lighting matches the car perfectly - do you find yours too bright?
Maybe Hurdy will know how to do this as he has the same unit.......

Hi All - thought I better update my build thread as I've been neglecting it for too long!
Here's a quick pick of the car as it is now:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FP1060775.jpg&hash=280bace8c233e52afeb4246b5e0917ed8ea58b7a)

I finally got around to washing, polishing and waxing it after getting inspiration from the detailing section
Since going Revo Stage1, it's had an S3 intercooler, twintercooler, S3 brakes all round, Autotech HPFP, Forge Twintake, WALK, Eibach ARBs front and rear, Resonated Milltek TBE, Koni FSDs and is now Revo ST2+ :jumping:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FSpinIMG_7631.jpg&hash=6c53d291c7d845e621b984e1894df1cf335c9afd)

Still to come is fitting Hurdy's beautiful sub box and amp. I've also got Rainbow components for the doors which will all be fitted leading up to Xmas - along with sound-proofing all over .
That's all for now folks - hope you like  :drinking:

The 'R' caliper pad springs were bought off Beddie (I think you can also get them off ebay) and they only come in black. The brakes are S3 ones (same as the Golf R) so now with the springs they are effectively Golf R brakes :happy2:

Easy to colour the splitter black on a light car, but tricky to make it look good on a black car!

Yeah the S3/Golf R calipers are a different shape to the Cupra/R32 ones - not sure why but they use the same discs and pads so not sure why they are a different shape .

And how do you find the twintercooler and Twintake intake?

I've just been drooling over the RS3 so not sure if I want to throw any more money at the Ed30
Will just fit the new speakers I've already bought and soundproof and enjoy it as is for the next year or so while I decide what to do next. :happy2:

It's a common problem with the Milltek, they slide backwards over time, you need to tag "weld" the joint to prevent it from slipping.  :sad1:
One of the reasons for me to chose APR RSC Turboback exhaust.  :happy2:
Title: Re: DBP Stage2+ Ed30: Speaker Upgrade
Post by: SKAVIA on March 02, 2011, 03:36:21 pm
As the weather is glum I thought I would focus on the inside of the car for now - hope you like :happy2:
I had previously bought Hurdy's beautiful custom made sub box and amp when he sold his car and decided to fit that and upgrade the rest of the speakers too
Here's the thread to show how the sub box was made and the effort and care that Hurdy took to build it :notworthy: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1063.0.html
10" Hertz Sub box and Audison 4 channel x 100w amp:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FIMG_8231.jpg&hash=9c8ef141ec61655e25416dbfaceabdc738d0c814)
Still leaves me with a fully usable boot :innocent:

I also upgraded the front door speakers from the crappy 2-way to some tasty Hertz 3 way ones.
(forgot to takes pics while I was installing :ashamed:)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FIMG_8226.jpg&hash=38596cf461e26e3aad5a2095cf186963e558736d)
The car was fully Dynamatted and the sound is stunning compared to before.
I ran like this for a few weeks and then decided to 'lift' the sound staging by fitting a Rainbow centre channel speaker by modifying the front centre air vent:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FIMG_8221.jpg&hash=78282214094cf747e082d3ffcf227afed817f5c4)

The car has 12 speakers and I now have Dolby 5.1 surround!
The Kenwood unit is a beauty and has full ipod/iphone integration, bluetooth, Garmin SatNav and also shows the video from my reversing camera
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn195%2FSKAVIA%2FIMG_8228.jpg&hash=e69c84e075e0ec338e876fec56dfc64247db37b9)
I'm happy with the interior now
Performance-wise it goes pretty well too - here's my graphs from the Surrey RR:

Looking good mate,
I had that exact Stereo in my car, but could not get used to it so gave up in favour of RNS510 instead.
I should upgrade my stereo speakers as they are all standard and quite poor, but don't have the music on that loud to really notice, and the music I do listen to is pretty poor anyway, so the upgrade would not really benefit me.
Will be nice to see the coilies when on too.

Cheers TC - yeah it's surprising as the Mk5 setup is quite poor out of the box. I was inspired by the Bose setup in my Audi which sounds crisp!
I would definitely spec that in every car from now on as it saves ripping the car apart later

Cheers Al - I don't drive around with the music blasting that much as I like to hear the car sounds - but it's nice to crank it up once in a while when a good tune comes on
Also got some cool music videos on my iphone which are fun!
Coilies should hopefully allow me to adjust the ride height to perfection - this car is costing me too much :ashamed:

Been a busy weekend for the car - new wheels/tyres, new uprated Sachs clutch and new coilovers!
Finally bit the bullet and bought some 19s - thanks to budge :happy2:
I decided to go for BBS CH as they suit the MK5 Ed30 nicely - just needed to be slightly larger
Got the APX coilovers fitted (thanks Big Al) to help with the ride and the clutch to get the power down nicely as I was getting clutch slip after ST2+.
Many thanks to Phil (Edition30_P) and his mate Chris for sorting out the fitting :happy2:
I'm very pleased with everything -  the clutch is sweet and not too heavy, the ride is very compliant and not at all harsh and the wheels look tasty :jumpmove:
I want to get them done in the same matt anthracite as my original pescaras, but I'll wait until the wife kerbs them and they need to be refurbed. I'm actually quite liking silver again in the sun
Some pics - hope you like  :drinking:

After being inspired by pics from flyboy and Big Al, I bought an old engine cover and modded it to fit with my twintake.
I decided to try and stick to an OEM look so kept it simple with black and silver - hope you like  :happy2:

looking very good mate,

is this held on with just the front two mounts??

if so have you done anything to the rear to keep it in place?
Title: Re: DBP Stage2+ Ed30 - New engine cover added

Cheers :drinking:
Yes, just the front 2 mounts hold it in place - nothing required at the back as it's secure and doesn't wobble or move.

I used a combination of a circular saw for the main straight cuts and a jigsaw for the smaller cuts.
Then just cleaned up the edges with a file and some sandpaper, degreased all the bits and sprayed the cover satin black and the silver strip a colour called aluminium (it's a matt finish).
I seperated the VW badge from the centre strip by gently heating with a heat gun so the double-sided tape softened enough for me to prise it off.

They are Golf R/Audi S3 brakes all round. 345mm disks up front and 310mm rears. Brilliant upgrade for fast road use and very cost effective  :happy2:

only if fitted.. :happy2:

Tis not a MOT failure, only if fitted an inoprative then it is a failure.

Not all cars are fitted with xenon light washers.

Levelers are the ones that if you retro fit, and have a headlight height adjuster from having Halogens previously on the dashboard thats now inoperative, then that can be seen as a failure. Either get a dashboard Blank like the R32's have because xenons are factory fit if you wanna take the chance, but from April, laws are tightening and even though i know my MOT tester, ive been advised to do this as my car has retro fitted set up the same as Skavia, I have a dashboard switch which is inoperative, which could been seen as a risk.

Thats how i read the new laws coming in from 1st April.. but each person can read it differently.

Hi,
V classy looking car!
Been trying to contact you about your xenons in for sale section. I am interested, and will be at gatwick next tuesday.
You say gen gti, does this mean your items are genuine vag oem parts?

As a newbie, 25 posts before im allowed to reply to a for sale post is a tough target, without p ing everyone else off with drivel!
Hopefully you can see from the few posts that i have made, that i am genuine ed30 owner.
Please get back to me.
Thanks

Hi SKAVIA

I am very interested in your ED 30.  I have been looking for the right one for nearly 3 months.  If you still have it for sale could we exchange numbers please?  I have the cash waiting for the right car.  I apologise in advance if this is not the right way to contact but I could not find another way.

Hope to speak soon.
