Hello people! I picked up my gti a week ago and must say it's a very nice car and I'm loving it. Been a massive fan for a long time! Mine is on a 05, engine code AXX. However I am worried of the fuel consumption which is not great, let's be straight I didn't buy the car expecting it to be as frugal as my tdi but I am genuinely concerned it's too high on my car!
Let me cut to the chase and explain why, when I pulled the car out for the first time it was more or less bone dry! So I went straight to my local bp and filled her up with £35 of normal unleaded at £1.07p a litre which sent the needle to 3/4 full. Sorry I can't remember the range it was showing initially but roughly I'd say 210 or something like that. Anyway this was Friday evening and i only stuck local over the weekend, so it was just town driving pottering around as they say!
The reason I'm concerned is, although yes I did have some fun here and there, I didn't really thrash the day lights out of it. Come today evening I've only done around 100 miles and the fuel level shot down to the 1/4 tank mark!? So thats something like around 14/15 mpg with the range showing 75miles which is probably ambitious to say the least! Are they really that bad local or could it be something more!
I must add it's a dsg but I was expecting abit more tbh. I thought maybe it could achieve around 150 miles at least? My commute is a 20 mile round trip to work during peak times with a mix of stop start and motorway. I have just chucked another £30 in now and range is showing 215 miles, I intend on taking it nice and easy to work and back and see what that gets me!
I apologise for the essay but can someone elaborate and advise me whether this sounds about right? Car is fully stock as well, haven't done the pcv check yet and I don't think DV is faulty either. Any advice will be greatly received..

Hi @GTI-Sam (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=13998)
First of all try using 98+ Ron petrol, GTI engines are designed to be run on this type of fuel, so either BP, Tesco Momentum or Shell V-Power are all 98 or 99 Ron. This might help. My GTI is an 05 AXX engine too and l get between 300-350 miles per tank. I drive around 20-30 miles a day for work and get between 29 and 36 mpg depending on the type of driving l do.

Sounds about right to me...
£35 will have got you 32 litres at that price and if it really was bone dry that equals not much more than half a tank (55litres) and all 3 of my GTIs have done an average of 280-300 miles on a full tank :happy2:
Also don't forget the tank is 'V' shaped, full to half will always get you a good bit more miles than half to empty...
-
mine is manual ed30 stage 1 on shell v power nitro i get 300miles to my tank and little left on reserve and have to say i don't drive it extremely efficiently :signLOL: No super economic but for the power and fun its great and worth every penny

Have you not got an MPG readout on yours? Should be somewhere on the display. But tbh it sounds about right, you've used about £20 worth if you have 1/4 tank left and 100 miles to £20 town driving and having a bit of fun sounds fine.
Just check that neither of your rear calipers are sticking as that's quite common and will cause bad mpg.

Hmm I guess it's too early to tell, I need to live with the car for abit longer yet. Yes it was very dry ! I think I'll be better off full tanking it rather than putting in 30 at a time then, I guess coming from a gt tdi it's a shock to me lol.
But as I said I didn't get one expecting it to be mega on fuel but I thought it would be better then that. Yes I do believe they run better on the high octane stuff but people also run em on 95 right? I'll have to give it a try though.
Yes I do have a mpg read out I think there's 2 right? It was low 20s I believe today.. no worries I'll make sure I check for that mate cheers. I think it's the smaller tank and me not being used to the needle shooting down lol.
Thanks for the replies people :happy2:

give the computers a reset too, compared to other cars in its class they can be very good on fuel. on a run they can get 35-38mpg my gf drives mine daily and she drives it very civilised and gets least 320-350 miles out of it. Not sure if the dsg helps that. Enjoy it either way. its a car for fun. your gt tdi was for saving pennies

Yes I shall do that in the morning as well before work. It will be interesting to see how much I can get on a full tank sometime but hopefully everything is normal.. and yeah your right it's to be enjoyed and the GTI is a great all rounder ! I have a few plans for it so now that I have one I may as well get it out of my system

Make sure your tyres are at the correct pressure, get a 4 wheel alignment, make sure it's serviced, fill the tank to the brim then see what mileage you get

If you feel the mpg is getting you down, keep this in mind....
My ed30 would only do 4 laps of the Nurburgring on a full tank of 102 octane fuel, so roughly £65 for 57 miles....
-
Using 95 Ron I always get at least 370 miles, and that's me driving it hard ever since it was remapped.
-
I stopped caring ages ago.... just fill up, bend over and smile! :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver:

For a while I thought I had a fuel leak but after some trial and error realised it was due to my heavy right foot and lots of small journeys. Driving like an old woman did improve my MPG but could only stick it for about half an hour.
-
On the bright side........ At least the petrol is cheap to buy at the moment!
-
Pre-cat removal will help :happy2:
-
It all depends on your journeys and right foot. I normally only get 250 miles to a tank around town, if that..... but on a run I've managed over 420 (across europe)
Stop worrying about mpg and just fill it when the light comes on..... or go back to a diesel. Your call.
-
Driving "normally" with the occasional sharp acceleration for overtake etc my 58 Gti generally gives 30mpg on short runs which gets up nearer 35 for a decent motorway jaunt. Compared to 15mpg from a G-Wagen petrol I ran for a while it's completely fine as a compromise of car cost versus fuel cost, newer cars are more frugal or you go for a grunty deisel and get even better for your dosh, BMW 530d for instance. Every car is a compromise in some fashion, need to decide on which compromises you can live with I suppose.
-
Don't worry too much because in the next five years they are going keep raising the price of diesel so it becomes cheaper to run cleaner small petrol engines.. Expect to see diesels banned from London congestion charge in the next 5 to 10 years also..
-
Wow! Well at least you had fun burning all that fuel beddie!
Yes great advice, as I've recently acquired the car I'm going to do an oil change anyway so I know what to top her up with. So I might as well just get a full service and I'll keep on top of the pressure too.
I wanna do a resonator delete so it sounds abit better than stock and enhances the dsg gear change sound? What do you reckon guys?
Also would any of you guys know how much would vw charge for a touch up pen? I need one for a few stone chips, mine is in reflex silver. Thanks
