Hi all
So I've had my mk5 GTI a few months now, started to complete some mods so thought I should start a build thread.
The car was previously owned by my little brother, I tried a number of times to convince him I should take ownership of it. Even offered a swap for my BMW 330 CI convertible but he was not interested.
So the day finally came when he decided to trade it in for a mk7 gti, quickly I jumped in and offered to take it of his hands. Fortunately for me he let me have it for the same money VW offered as trade in value.

First job on the list was to convince VW the car was still under warranty and the rust on the front wings should be covered. Which I am pleased to say was successful as well as a coil pack recall I didn't know about.
Next job was a full service from VW. Cam belt, water pump, air con recharge, brake fluid and all fluids and filters changed.
After Christmas came the decision to stick with the 18" monza alloys so a diamond cut refurb was required. So they got booked in with a local highly recommend firm who transformed them. More than pleased with the result.

Not the best pick but an idea of how bad they were, serious white worm.

Next came some Audi tail pipe tips, an idea seen on this forum. A cheap mod until I can save for a miltek turbo backed exhaust.

To address the plastic honey comb grill I purchased some C4. After an evening in the garage with a cotton bud the results were impressive.

Huge improvement to the stance of the car, I didn't want the car in the weeds as I use it to commute and ferry my 2 year old daughter around in. The wife didn't even notice the change. I personally love them, done a lot of car customising over the last 20 years and these are better than eibach, apex, pi, and jom. I have a Ford C-Max fitted with Ap coilovers, the golf ome shocks and H&Rs work just as well.

This week I had the divert valve replaced. I knew the car was losing some boost but I wasn't expecting this !!

How the car never threw up any error codes amazes me, or that VW don't recognise it as an issue!!
The car now feels a lot more punchy, all 200 horses going through the front wheels as they should.
I'm happy for now, in time I'd like a stage 2 + remap.
I have started collecting some interior mods and will post them as I fit them. They include chrome switches, gti seat handle inserts and replacement driver and passenger grab handles.

Thanks Jayha11 - I got the Audi tail pipes idea from yourself, hope you didnt mind. Wish I had the time to complete a full detail like you have done to yours.
Spankie - cam follower is on the list, is this a job that can be done at home or should i give it to a garage?
-

Hello mate!
Lovely looking car! I want to do exactly that to my exhaust pipe too! Could you send me a link to the tips you bought? Theres a few different variants and I'd rather buy the correct one first time round.
Thanks,
Faz

Hi fazi123
Here a screen shot of the details from eBay.
Couldn't work out how to paste a link with my phone.
They need a bit of persuasion with a rubber mallet but they will go on.

Thanks for looking and the feed back...

Dumb question but do the Audi tips slide over the existing tips?

Still waiting for the hazard switch to arrive, so made a start treating the leather on the steering wheel.

The GTI looks great now, can see you've given it plenty of TLC. Can't believe the state of those handles!
-
Question, should I go for pressed plates??
-
Looks really smart. Whats the difference in ride with the new springs over the originals?
-
Thanks.
The ride quality is almost the same as stock, a shade stiffer but not harsh. Highly recommend for fairly cheap upgrade. I love them.
-
Question, should I go for pressed plates??
No - they're not needed IMHO. I don't think metal number plates add much to a car, unless they are period specific. Yours looks great as is without the crappy EU blue logo thing.
-
Agree, I'll keep the plates I have.
Thanks for the comments. It's been fun putting back to a good standard. All of the upgrades were researched on this forum.
Need to start saving for a remap, induction air intake and then a thorough engine bay valet.
-
Dave J - thanks for the comments on your earlier post, I missed it first time round.
-
Great to see a half n half shot of the C4 it next on my list for all the plastics! Car looks great too, very clean.

What product have you used on the wheel as mine looks the same and was looking at trying to restore it?
-
For the steering wheel I found a bottle of Porsche leather conditioner in my dads garage. It's really old stuff but worked really well. I would have though any decent leather cleaning and conditioning kit would o the same.
I used the C4 on all the external plastics. It's not cheap stuff but the results speak for themselves. Highly recommend it.

As it was such a nice weekend, would have been a shame not to get the cars out.

Funny isn't it, how a little red switch can make such a difference to the feel in the car. Did mine a couple of weeks ago as well as interior LED's and it's amazing how much nicer it is. It's the little touches that really make a car. :drinking:
Chris
-
Totally agree Chris, one of my centre lights has gone so I need to replace mine. Where did you source yours from? Are they an eat fit?
-
It was this kit (link below) I bought and am very pleased with it. The lights came in little bags with tags on each bag as to where they went as there are several different types of LED. Only tool I needed for most of them was a plastic trim pry tool and it was super easy. The only other tool I needed was iirc a small torx bit to remove the centre front dome light as this made it easier rather than trying to pull the bulbs down out of it with it still in the roof as they are hard to get a hold of and didn't want to break them.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281806280081?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
You can see what they look like in my build thread. Very nice white light and at night when the interior lights come on then it's like daylight in the car.
Cheers,
Chris
-
Cheers Chris, now on the list of jobs :happy2:
-
No worries, I used this video as a reference too although he doesn't take the front dome down he just pulls the bulbs out from underneath:
My only other bit of advice is for the foot well and boot light make sure and disconnect the bulb holder from the wiring loom before putting the led in. I forgot to do this with the boot light, popped out the old one, put the new one in and it popped the fuse... doh! Thankfully I had a spare 7.5amp fuse so just replaced it and all working ok.
Just send me a pm if you get stuck and I can send you some more detailed pics of how I did them. I still can't believe how bright and white they are.
Cheers,
Chris
-
Very nice golf given me some ideas for mine
-
Thanks for the comments and continued support guys.
-
Really nice! love you're subtle mods! What did you use to treat the leather on the steering wheel?
-
Thanks Jamie
I'm a bit to old for the full on 'in the weeds and stretched tyres' look these days but I do like my cars to look like they have been custom but it's not immediately obvious what's been done.
The steering wheel is treated with leather cleaner first then a good leather conditioner. I found an old Porsche detailing kit years ago in my dads garage. But I'd say any good quality cleaner and conditioner would give the same results. I do it every time I cleaner the car and it's now unnoticeable
-

It's awesome! Had it running while on the ramp for a bit before calling it a day. It's got an awesome burble.

Hi
Love what you've done with the car so far.
I want to buy some driver and passenger grab handles but can't find any new ones anywhere. Could you share where you got yours?

Thanks for the comments Matt.
I bought mine off ebay as a package deal, I found these though:

Depends if you have a 3 door or more door on which style you need. Get some chrome switches too, you'll need to take the passenger door card off, plenty of guides on here to help you.

Just got back from Sanis motors, more details to follow but the car is better than I imagined.
One happy mapped GTI owner.
-
great system isn't it ??
i have different tips to yours though.
I'm even thinking of deleting that first silencer to go full hoonigan mode. but it may drone on long journeys :scared:
-
They are a different league. I love the over burble. Well pleased with it.
Car feels like it's finally finished...until I find the next mod I want
-
So the car was left at Sari Motors in Chelmsford Essex, a VAG specialist I've know for years.
You've seen the previous pics of the exhaust going on, Reza the head mechanic was almost anal about ensuring everything was lined up perfect, 2mm this way, 3mm that way. Eventually he was happy and moved into fitting a new PVC Valve, cam follower, RS4 return valve, and the dog bone mount. I also needed a new o/s rear caliper so that was sorted to.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmat14%2FMobile_Uploads%2FF8D62509-D9EA-4B70-B5C0-DFBEF5F4B773_zpsfuq8xzv1.jpg&hash=0713c157b6a01944a581481cf03306c0da28f689)

Then came the remap, 4 times Reza adjusted it until he was happy. The guy is a perfectionist.
When he handed me the keys he came on the test drive and made sure I was 100% happy. Which I clearly was.
The car is a beast, 275 bhp of noise. I love the way he's mapped it perfect to the induction kit and the Powervalve sounds mega.
Once I'd got home, still grinning my a*se off I noticed what had been written in the back of the key fob.

Gave it a clean today. I really pleased with how this has all come together.

What's your mod list mate (engine wise)? And do you have a graph of the map?
I'm at 270/345 myself on a Stage 2 R-Tech map. So nice to drive, although at this point we're getting close to the limits of the k03.
I was advised to get the RS4 return valve actually, when I had a Loba pump fitted, and got a bit of logging done. Didn't originally think it was needed on a k03 car, but I stand corrected! I'll get one when it goes in for the brake upgrade in a couple of months.

That's the only thing they don't have is a rolling road, will need to get it on one for a print out.
I Agree, anything over 270/275 would be on the limits of the k03.
I'm happy with how the car is set up so I doubt I'll push for anymore power.
Too much fun to be had at the moment.
I'll dig out the engine mod list mate

There's a few k03 cars on here that have been in the 290s, one or two touching 300. I think once you're up to 270odd it's the law of diminishing returns. The next 20bhp costs quite a bit if cash. But if you have plans to go further than a k03, you really need those mods in place.
I dare say a 2+ k03 could be mapped beyond 300bhp... but it wouldn't last long!

Get yourself an uprated fuel pump. Loba or APR.
I'm currently on a Stage 2 R-Tech map. Also with a lovely full Powervalve. The standard pump just couldn't keep up after being on the tamer fuel map of the Stage 1 map. Fuel cuts, holding back etc. It's a much nicer beast now the Loba is fitted. I'm still on the Stage 2 map. Not going to bother with the small jump from 2 to 2+. I'm going to do intercooler, intake and a k04 or k03 hybrid and then get Stage 3 map.

That's defo one to watch. Will be interesting to see what gains you get.

Now for some fun :happy2:

With a big cooler like the Peron, Revo intake, a BBT k03 hybrid and that RS4 valve, I should see 350bhp.
Injector wise, I'm not sure. I've seen quite a few graphs of the BBT k03 mapped by R-Tech on the standard k03 injectors, and they all make good torque across the revs. I'll speak to Niki and see what benefit, if any, there is to k04 injectors.
Already got an uprated Helix clutch which should be good for 400lb/ft, and the Powervalve, so I'd like to think the big costs are out of the way engine-wise. Apart from the turbo!

Car looks very clean mate
Enjoy the new grunt!

Car looks lovely mate. Are the H&R springs a 40mm drop? Looking at some for mine. Cheers

Thanks bud.
I think they are a 30mm drop. Once they settle they sit perfect.
The best springs out there in my opinion. There's a chance they will go through the OEM shocks quicker. Mine are ok at the moment but a good replacement for when they do go would be the B8's. A lot of love for them on this forum.
That said you will be ok with standard shocks.
Do it bro, you won't regret it.

Lovely example this!

Quick motor man. Where did you get the map done, missed it along the line? Was it a custom map? I'm considering a stage 1 Revo map, dont want to take it too far on the performance front so that should do me nicely.

I've heard and read really good reports on Revo so always a good option. I went to a guy in Essex who has a garage called Sani Motors. Reza is the head guy there who knows his stuff. He's anal when it comes to vags. Has a pretty quick GTI himself.
I originally was going stage 1 but knew I'd want more power so went for a 2. Pleased I did. It had a few maps before Reza was happy so yes a custom map.
What ever you go for you'll be pleased, the difference is night and day.

Car looks excellent mate black always looks awesome after a polish and wax, I swore by the poor boys black hole on my type r! Some really good mods and nice figures after the remap too!

Bridgestone potenzas seem to the best rated so I'll give them a go I reckon.
-
Wow your motor is clean, the wheels and exhaust look spot on :notworthy:
I've recently replaced all 4 of my tyres with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 and would recommend them, good (though not jaw dropping) consistent grip in all conditions.

Hi, loving the mods you've done to the car. All done tastefully and make the car look so much better! :happy2:
-
So a project is never finished huh.
I'm thinking of retro fitting a mk6 steering wheel and gear stick. I'm happy enough to have a go at the gear stick but think the steering wheel may be a bit more than I'm comfortable with, air bags and safety first.
Anyone know of a retro fitters in Essex ??

Thanks for the kind feedback James.
-
Lovely car. Lots of nice mods there  :happy2:
Those are super power figures from the remap.
I've a stage 1 map on my car but have since fitted a full 3in turbo back exhaust and RamAir induction. I'm waiting a little while till I can afford a Peron Intercooler and them I'm heading back for stage 2 mapping.
I'll be absolutely chuffed if I make close to 275hp :happy2:
-
Thanks for the kind comments
I think the rs4 fuel return valve helped. I'd expect you to get the same results especially with the intercooler. I have heard of cars getting close to 300 bhp but I doubt the engine, clutch would last very long and it would be hard to get the power down without the wheels spinning.
To get much more out the ko3 is an expensive pursuit for not a lot of gains.
You'll love the stage 2. I'm still grinning
-
Brilliant!!
I have an RS4 valve in the garage. I got it off fab5freddy on here :happy2:
I'll throw that in too before I go for the second map!
Nice one. Cheers
-
It's supposed to remove any flat spots so worth doing.
-
Love the look of this one! Nice power gains too!
-

It's only worth fitting if your fuel pump is uprated. Standard pump doesn't reach the limits of the standard return valve.

Ok so I'm happy with the performance of the car but still think it's lacking something in the styling department.
Suggestions on what to do next?
Why not upgrade your gear stick for a mk6 or mk7? I got a mk6 one on the cheap just by looking daily and getting lucky!
Upgrade to xenon lights?
Upgrade to ed30 lights? I upgraded mine yesterday!
Shark fin antenna?
They're my suggestions albeit not cheap ones!! I've tracked most of it in my build thread!

Ordered myself a vortex golf ball gear stick today. I'll post when fitted.
Also look at replacing the tailgate handle for either a mk 6 or mk 4. Not sure if I should go black or stay chrome?

Where did you pick it up? That's a nice addition!
I personally think a mk6 chrome is the best. I've tried mk4 and didn't like it.
Worth the money to upgrade to a mk6!

Ebay mate, managed to get it for a reasonable price too :happy2:
Yeah I have tried dismantling a mk4 already and painted it black but I think it might be too much and the chrome adds a bit of contrast. I have an early soft close on mine where the badge is fluch, Di yuo replacethe whole thing or just the emblem?

I had the soft close which I wanted to keep but they were prone to whiteworm.
To replace it you need to change the entire mechanism. Those older slow close ones can't be stripped and emblems put on.
Mk6 mechanism second hand shoudl be £60 or so.
Fitting is easy enough but the wires need to be cut and stretched slightly as the connector is on the opposite side.

Thanks for your post - you mentioned issues with changing grab handle trim on passenger side ?
just about to do this myself...

Is was a bit of a pain, you have to remove the whole door card, in my case the white plastic clips stayed in the door frame so i had to get some wire and make a noose round them, and use a lot of force to pull them out so I could reuse them.
Let us know how you get on.
-
More parts arrived this week:
Vortex VW golf ball gear knob
And a couple of bits from RichardGTI on here, black grill emblem and polo aerial.
Started working on a mk4 tailgate emblem too.
Looking forward to the weekend to get everything on.

Be interested to see how you get on with the mk4 emblem!
As I said, I tried it but couldn't come close to perfection so opted for mk6 in the end!

I completed installing new Grab handle trim / switch panel trim but now the two switches for passanger windows don't work aaaaaaarg!
I don't really want to take it off again haha because the grab handle insert broke when I took the original driver side trim off and I had to buy this:
(https://v7ndzq.dm2304.livefilestore.com/y3m0hhCVQPfZOZfTp0Zo-Zrr6TS2ervkefaH16PDO5oM1Y3R4Oo1nab69j1PbrlwX1FfGkyyByw_3lGHAJMgHEwMTl9Kyw6uDWZMZ9CSVsBTXWSnqdo8lCUOABBK0bzS3v4aJu-XZUZZpJB3kwGRO7B3EIr9KGuMNXcVRuJB5je030?width=500&height=411&cropmode=none)
I didn't have to take the whole door panel off because the grab handle insert part comes off of the whole part if you unclip the easy side first and then the other!.
couple of things I would do next time -
1.remember to take the metal clips off the old part!
2.use a plastic catch bag so the torx 30 does not fall down into the door!
3.wire is a must! I had none! so I used my abus combilock cable - worked a treat haha
best tutorial on yt is this one:

I have to say it does feel a bit smaller than the OEM one but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
Keeping it silver at the moment, looking to rattle can the grill satin black soon so will see then.
-
Looks really well - does your brother want it back yet??
-
Haha, funnily enough he drove it today. First time since I've had it. It shocked him when the boost kicked it and all the noise came. Full hooligan mode.
I was anxious he'd bring it back in one piece. Stood in the drive waiting like a meerkat.
-
Don't say you going to paint your grill! I'm waiting for c4 trim restorer to arrive after reading your posts! expensive stuff! I'm confused now!

Don't stress it buddy. Not done it yet. It is expensive stuff but the results are amazing. Still undecided. I might leave it yet. Just fancied a stealth black look for the front end.
You'll be pleased with c4. Do all the exterior trim with it.
-
haha ok cool.... can you use it for the window rubber trim?

I'm not sure. I think it's for the plastics rather than the rubber.

Liking the golf ball gear knob. Might have to stick that on my to-do list!

As I said before @Rippers (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14728) I tried the exact same method as yourself and met the same result.
You won't ever be happy with the method you're using.
I honestly recommend you change to a mk6 handle for around £50 and you won't regret it!!!

Hi all
Not much has happened lately to the car, I'm still enjoying being a mk5 owner. Decided to give her a good clean today and get some nattys wax on and rim wax ready for the winter months.

Thanks mate, have to found one yet or are you still shopping??
-
I've put a deposit on the laser blue one I linked in my thread, looks cleaner in real life inside and out and so smooth to drive, went for my clutch a few times though , and I got him to put the bbs vz 18s on off another golf, just trying to sort out selling my ST back to the garage I bought it off, saw him Sunday and he wanted to buy it there and then but now I can't get him to answer texts.
I need the cash to buy the golf
-
Lovely looking car fella.
I will be keeping an eye on this thread for inspiration as i have a 05 so things like the rear badge you've done will be the same on mine
Plus i have been looking for a good vag specialist in essex and had not even heard of sani's motors so i will give them a call on some work i want done :happy2:
-
Cheers mate, it's been a fun project.
There's always things I want, bigger brakes, some nasty rust appearing that needs sorting. Other than that I hope I'm done. But then there's always ko4 !!

Hey Dr.
Is ther a little sensor or meter that sticks out on your AC compressor
that now sits so close to the Radiator that even an electric fan will not fit there?

Stunning car mate! @Rippers (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14728) I have the same :happy2:
Have you thought about a rear wiper delete? Supposedly an easy mod and looks cool!

Real shame about the alloy :sad1: Otherwise its looking fantastic. I still haven't passed you on the road?! :driver:
Perhaps I missed it but where did you source the exhaust? and roughly how much?! I was up by Sanis this weekend and it made me wonder as I'm looking for something to make some more noise on mine. Cheers :happy2:

Painted??
Are your wheels not diamond cut? Unfortunately the whiteworm will now start to creep back in but painting them will seal them slightly and slow it down!!
Sad to see it happen!

User error. Posted befor finishing the quote.
Sorry I meant paintit uk in Essex near us. They are diamond cut you are correct. They sorted them last time so will get it booked back in.
The exhaust came from powervalve U.K. They are on here and offer a forum discount. Not cheap but quality.
When the weather gets better let's get a meet sorted and you can hear it.
