Hi guys, I'm relatively new member to this forum, I'm a member on detailingworld so have decided to join here too.

Picking the new car up tomorrow so thought I would start a new project thread on here.

Having had the Fabia for just under 2 years I thought it was time for a change, I fancied a 3 door petrol hatchback and had a look at a few options including;

Ford Focus st
Mini Cooper s john cooper works
Audi s3
Volkswagen golf gti

I finally settled on the one I wanted, its an 06 plate 74k 3dr reflex silver Mk5 Golf GTI,

Admittedly I would have liked one with a slightly better spec but finding one that is mechanically as spot on as this one was proving very difficult, this one has Full VW Service History with the cam belt and waterpump being replaced by VW back in January and looks like it had been cared for, it ticked all the right boxes in that sense and theres always parts that I can retrofit like cruise control.

I have a few plans for the car, mainly little cosmetic touches to make the car my own so will hopefully update this thread as I go along, my aim with this car is to keep it a long time and look after it as well as I can like I have with my two previous cars.

Hi mate, only the usual small cosmetic touches, just really enjoying the car at the minute instead

So after picking the car up on Thursday I have been enjoying the car, save to say I love it! So glad I made the change now, really happy:) Few surprises with the car too, from the test drive I noticed the sound of the exhaust was slightly different to standard so thought it had been altered, maybe a centre removed or something along the lines as the exhaust was that dirty I couldn't see any markings on it, however I looked really closely when I got the car back home and noticed the words Miltek on each tip:) I was so happy with the discovery as it really is a nice exhaust, not too loud when just driving around but put your foot down and you know about it:D

After reading a number of different threads and signing up on mk5gti.co.uk I then started looking around at things I could do.

The first thing I saw was the euro cup holder mod which I really like the look of, it really tidies the interior and makes it look complete.

New these parts go for around £80 so I decided to look for alternatives, this led me looking to breakers yards for golfs that had them fitted from factory, I took the trip to Sheffield and managed to find one and buy it.

I have got to change the footwells, glovebox and vanity lights but there is no rush on these,

The next thing I decided was, GTI inserts for the seats to fill the gap, really happy with this mod

So the other day I went about changing a few little things on the interior just to smarten up the interior IMO.

One of the first parts I had sourced for the car was a darkened hazard switch.

First I used a trim removal tool to release the cover of the vent

I then removed the inner casing which was held in place by 1 t20 at the rear

I then removed the air vents, pushed out the old hazard switch and swapped it for the new one

The next part was a sort of trial run for how easy the armrest is to fit, originally I had planned to do this when I fit either my iPod adapter or rcd510 and euro cup holder however I'm still undecided which route I want to take so thought i'd give it a try anyway.

I thought the larger cup holder at the rear was great for big sports bottles however i felt that the little trays were a little useless and thought the armrest would come in handy.

Coming from the fabia which had one cup holder i'm finding the golf has so much more clever little space, both door cards have a cup holder which can fit them, there are two cup holders in the centre console and now i'll have two more in the rear of the armrest so you just can't compare the two:lol:

I then removed the mats from the cup holder which had 2 t20 torx screws and the tray bit held one so I unscrewed them and the unit simply comes away

I then removed the handbrake cover as I knew the armrest would not fit on whilst it was still in place

I didn't get any photos of me putting in the armrest but only have the one fitted so far, please excuse the state of the interior but I had planned to clean it all up properly once I had fitted the armrest

The last job was to clean up the steering wheel, it was very shiny at the top so I gave it a few wipes with dr leather wipes, I was amazed at how much dirt came off in the first two or three wipes, I then continued and then used a microfibre to wipe off the excess. Heres the finished result

Good job on the interior bits! The armrests really make a difference on these cars I think!

Having been quite busy recently I really would like to update this more than I do at the minute so here goes!

So having asked VW about servicing I was told on mine they would do an Oil service for £154 as the last one was an interval service, I was not happy with paying that for basically an oil change and filter. So knowing that I aim to keep this car for a long time I decided that I will be do all the services from now on and will take pictures and evidence them in a folder that I will make.

So I got in contact with TPS and put an order in for the following;

Oil filter & sump plug
Fuel filter
Pollen filter
Cam follower & o'ring
PCV valve

I ordered the following online;

Castro edge 5w30 oil
NGK Iridium IX BKR7EIX Spark plugs

I also used an air compressor to fully clean out my air filter instead of the cleaning kit I had purchased, the next service I do I plan to get a new filter on it anyway.

Oil change & Filter

So first thing we did was to jack the car up and put it on axle stands, we took the under tray off and took the old sump plug out.

We then used some fresh oil to try and drain every last bit of the old engine oil.

Oil filter, first up was to unscrew the dust cap off the bottom of the oil filter, then you need to push up the orange piece of plastic to drain out the old oil still left inside. Then a 38mm socket will remove the filter casing with the filter inside.

Thank you and I used to think it would be hard to do it but if you've got a decent tool box and then a 38mm socket for the oil filter then its really a lot simpler thank you'd think!

When I got the Golf I first went to VW in June when I first got the car to put in a claim about the rust on the wings as they are covered under the 12 year bodywork guarantee, since then I have chased them up every couple of weeks to see how they was getting on.

Anyway to cut the long story short I go a phone call yesterday saying my claim had been approved and they are going to replace both wings. They need the car monday to friday next week to put two new front wings modify the new sponges underneath to prevent the problem occurring again and then to blend the panels.

I am taking the car in tomorrow and they will be giving me a courtesy car until the job is done. So all in all very happy!!

Better than what I got - I had a VW Up! And they always give me a manual car even though I request an auto. Hate driving manuals!

The Up did have beats audio in which I've not seen before (my standard golf sound system sounded better if I'm honest!)

So today I went to VW to pick the car up after having its front wings replaced under their bodywork guarantee. When I first got there I spotted the car so had a proper look round the car before going in.

I must say they have done a top job with the car and am so happy with it, they have replaced the two wings with brand new parts, modified the new sponge on the inside so its not exposed and then run a silicone bead around it to prevent it from happening again. They have also blended the paint so is a really good match and you wouldn't be able to tell.

I then went into the dealership and was greeted by one of the bodyshop supervisors, he asked me if i'd had a look round the car and said yes, he then got me to sign the warranty sheet saying the work they had done to the car, I have got a copy of this and will keep for my own record to show the work has been done. We swapped keys he had a quick look round the polo then that was it I was off.

I am so happy with the work they've done it was worth the 8 month and at no point was I asked for a single contribution by VW for the work.

When I got the car I noticed that the interior grab handles were quite worn and looking at the how to's on mk5gti.co.uk I decided that this was a job i'd like to do. When I put an order in for my service bit's from TPS I also ordered the three trim parts I needed. With this I also decided to change the headlight switch, window switches and fuel switch to the newer mk6 type.

So having got the car back from VW today I decided to get them swapped over.

To start we used the trim removal tool to separate the two plastic pieces, the top one is held in by two t30 screws, we removed these and then thought the handle would then come away...

Looking good with the new wings, interior is looking much nicer too, I intend on changing the switches and grab handles, springs next?  :wink:

Thanks mate, yeah i'd say it's definitely worth it! Haha maybe not just yet, i'd like an rcd510 next I think then around summertime get the wheels redone then maybe some springs but don't know whether to get some depo headlights.

Thank you all appreciate your kind words, it has made a big difference to the inside of the car and i'm really happy i've done it.

As for whats next, i'll be taking it slow for the next month or so, i've got a years insurance to pay and an mot in April, I have partially organised my cruise control fitment around mid to end march. I have reserved a set of genuine gti mats from tps, been looking at a metal forest to finish off the footwell and then I've also purchased a bobble fluff lint remover to just tidy a few bits up.

So having been busy with revising for exams for work, I can happily say I have now finished them, I also passed my LGV theory test last Friday in preparation for my practical course in April so am looking forward to that. Anyway...

I have similar issues with my steering wheel - but I used a magic eraser sponge and it worked wonders. Just dipped it in some warm water and went round the steering wheel.

The thing was covered in grime when I was done:

Got round to fitting my new mats today, when I bought the car it didn't have any mats in it so when I part exchanged the Fabia I took the mats out of that one.

I've had these mats since they came with my first car so they don't fit the golf perfectly but they're better than having none in there. I will now use them as my winter set and the new ones from now until then.

So with the MOT coming up this month I decided to fix the only advisory the car got last year; the high level brake light.

Volkswagen would charge just under £400 to do this job as they say that you need to remove the rear spoiler to access the light. Having read up online I decided to do the fix myself. So on the day I had my cruise control fitted I nipped to TPS to get the new one.

I ordered a friends service parts through tps and got him good discount, so as he was going to pick the bits up I ordered a couple of things and got him to pick them up for me.

I then diluted the screen wash to the correct dilution using de-ionised water, I have worked out the following;

1 Litre VW screen wash - £4
5 Litre De ionised water - £2

I diluted it down to 1:4 as recommended, the washer tank is 4 litres so works out that it costs just under £5 a time.

So recently I haven't been using the golf as much due to buying a second car:D

I bought the corsa off a good friend who had had it since new, his in laws had just given him their old car so he was selling this. I bought it for £200 with just over a month left on the mot. Im not one to turn down a project so I did a bit of work on the car, I cleaned it up, serviced it and changed the exhaust and handbrake on it so it passed the mot. This monday I sold the corsa for £650 and during the month I had it I put about 1000 miles on it, so kept them miles off the golf:thumb:

This then gave me the chance to get the golf up on axel stands so I could take the arch liners off give them a good clean and then paint the disc hubs and repaint the red calipers as they had started to fade.

I had the golf on the axel stands for about 9 days, it wasn't until the day I took the golf off them that I realised I should have disconnected the battery.

The car wouldn't start so I had to jump start it from the corsa, I then took it for a drive and called in at shell to put some vpower in it. All good until I go to start it again and it wouldn't so I had to get someone to jump start it again and got it back home.

I was going to replace the battery before winter anyway so I knew which one I wanted anyway so ordered a Varta.

Oil Filler Neck

As my car has the evoms intake kit on it the standard engine cover no longer fits without modifying it however I like the way it looks without. The oil filler has a neck on it so it sits flush with the cover, this neck is just held on by glue so I decided to get rid of it so my cap would then sit flush on the cam cover.

The old diaphragm was fine, no tears but just a nice upgrade to do, knowing this one is much more robust!

Yesterday I had my timing chain and tensioner replaced, the old one was starting to rattle a bit, noticeable on idle when it was up to temperature.

The car is now much quieter than before, it didn't necercassirly need doing yet however this is more for my peace of mind and its nice knowing its been done.

Whilst having the timing chain done it gave me chance to look at the underside of the car. It turns out I've not got a cat back exhaust. Ive got a full turbo back miltek exhaust with sports cat I couldn't believe it! The last owner was quite clued up it seems!! :smiley:

So today I changed the oil, filter and sump plug.

Loving the detail in the write up. Looks like you have a nice clean car there. Glad you got the wings sorted, I'm just about to attempt mine and my wife's car too! Fingers crossed!
Out of interest what did you pay for the parts and labour for the tensioner and gaskets.
Just ordered the same switches as yours too thanks for the inspiration! :happy2:

Thank you mate, fingers crossed then!

The parts came to £167 from TPS and £150 for the labour off a friend so just over £300 really :happy2:
