Title: BD's Black 3 Door GTI
Post by: bad devotions on July 15, 2016, 09:43:38 am
Hey all,

So, i wasn't too sure about creating one of these as i am not a modder as such and haven't really modded a car in any way shape or form. But when i look at my car i've made a few tweaks here and there and would like to do some more. I am not in any great hurry and won't be rattling through my list as quick as some others on here, but there you are.

I am going to keep this first post as a where i am now post and include a list of stuff i'd like to do/have done. So, here goes.

Latest Pics [09.01.2017]

Upgrades/tweaks i have done...
- GFB DV+
- ECU remap
- RCD 510 DAB + 7N0 gateway
- cherry red hazard switch
- chrome tipped window/mirror switches + new arm rest grab handle things
- Sonny Boy rear window blinds (poor mans window tinting!)
- MKVII GTI gear knob
- GTI foot rest plate
- Depo Projectors + 35w 5k HID kit
- Polo stubby aerial
- ED30/R32 rear lights (done! not pictured)
- A4 Exhaust tips (not pictured)
- super pro anti-lift kit
- MDI Armrest kit
- 18" Black TTRS wheels

Stuff i'd like to do
- Lower engine mount - http://www.vibra-technics.co.uk/vw/golf_jetta_bora_vento_mkvvi/463/VAG520M/bottom_engine_mount_subframe_mount_20r32
- VWR shocks and Eibach Sportline springs... maybe, still not decided.
- E30 front and rear colour coded splitter/valance
- US grill
- open fog grills
- mk6 MFSW
- cruise control
- mk6 heater controls

Not sure i want to go down the path of new exhaust plus CAI. I might do that, but i've read mixed things about induction kits/open filters so i might park that one. pre-cat delete is something i'd like to get done, but it'll probably mean getting a map done again so again might park that for now too.

From looking at the pics, it seems the mkvii gear knob is still sitting a little too high so just need to trim a little more of the metal rod underneath.

i bought my mk7 gear knob from this guy: http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/gtd_stuur (http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/gtd_stuur)

and followed this guide to install: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,100626.0.html (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,100626.0.html)

When i bought the car it had the standard Halogen lights on it. The NSF (left) headlight had some yellow tinge to it and was quite fogged up. At the time didn't realise that it's possible to polish this out and as a result i bought some projectors and a HID kit.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz363%2Fbaddevotions1%2F2015-01-25_12.17.51_zpssutsmdvk.jpg&hash=c66f5329f057d1c7554ac256d9f911852bf00b41)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz363%2Fbaddevotions1%2F2016-05-28_16.43.12_zpsef3nj8lo.jpg&hash=fc7da8c6702f2fcdd972baf0be3595bbb9a09c5e)

I since tried polishing up the old headlight and made a right hash of it! Doesn't help that i don't have a machine polisher, but hey ho, it ended up on eBay anyway :D

Last post from me today otherwise i'll be accused of spamming :D lol!

a cheeky shot from when i had it remapped. V12 did a good job and i am happy with the result, but it's a shame i have no idea of the current power output. It would be nice to know.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz363%2Fbaddevotions1%2F2016-06-24_10.12.30_zpsetgwwdlm.jpg&hash=2c5e383cb5971653765f7533bf27ee13cda10783)

And finally, these are the wheels i am thinking of getting. I had to photoshop the car black as originally it was grey.

yup - that's the one. I offered 80 euros which was accepted so you might be able to offer less than that. The mod itself is straightforward and definitely helps if you have a dremel!

Great work.

I've wanted to try the mk7 gear knob myself for a while but couldn't justify the cost of one in the uk, and stressed about having to cut the shaft. Looks like its a pretty straight forward mod that will update the interior.

I'll be watching your thread with interest for more updates

Nice one bud.

Thanks Rippers. This will be a slow one though. I've shelled out for a new DSLR and have holiday coming up. Plus the wife wants a new garden so money is tight at the moment.

I love the mkvii gear knob. I figure the car is 10 years old and any value it would have retained will be long gone before you know it, so screw it, i want the car how i want it! :)

no major updates. I've put a red GTI badge on the front as my original silver one was broken on one side. Thought i'd try red and see what it looks like. I am happy with it.

How are you getting on with the GFB DV? Much change in the throttle response as per the ad? How about noise?
Keeping an eye on this thread as yours is quite similar to where i want to go with mine

no issues at all. tbh i do not notice any difference in throttle response compared to the DV i had in already, but there was nothing wrong with the DV that i took out. i did this more for peace of mind especially as i knew i was getting the ecu re-mapped.

How does the boost feel on your car then?

Can you descirbe it well please over the gear ranges?

i.e. if you floor it in third gear from 1500rpm does a boost come out of nowhere after half a second and you're thrown back or is it a gradual bang from the second you floor it?

I haven't analysed it in great detail to be honest. I put my foot down and it goes  :driver:

I like the lights.

Look out for some H&R springs, they work well with OEM shocks and make the car handle really well. Not crash or harsh on the ride comfort and you'll get ride of that wheel arch gap  :happy2:
Title: Re: BD's Black 3 Door GTI

Got to get myself a set of the darker rear lights. They make such a difference to the car. Looks great on black. 100 quid is a good price too!

I can vouch for the H&Rs. Really nice drop, doesn't look too rakey, and like Rippers says, they work well with standard dampers. Although I would consider a set of uprated dampers at the same time for a complete solution.

I've had mine fitted for a year or so, maybe 7000 miles, and they do seem to accelerate wear on the dampers, which stands to reason, although It's still a decent ride. I'd say brand new oem dampers + H&R springs probably ride just as well as brand new uprated dampers + H&R springs, just that the oem dampers are having to work a bit harder, so they won't feel great for as long as the uprated set.

There's a newish set of dampers from VWR that sound excellent, as well as the usual Bilstein B8. The VWR dampers cost less if I remember right.

Anyway, rambling a bit... The lights look spot on mate. Very effective little mod

@ajp yeah I need to work out what to do next. I am considering the front and rear valance but I think suspension/handling next. Might have to get the bits piecemeal and then book it in to be done in one go.

I'll have to research it though. At the moment I am thinking B8 + H&R and a super pro ALK. Gonna have to save a couple of months mind and not spend any more money!

No idea how to install this ALK either. I've searched but can't find a how to or see how much labour it would cost me either. Job for today to find out i think.

Probably also worth mentioning that i picked up some of those A4 exhaust tips. Not totally amazing IMO but they'll do until i get a proper exhaust :D  :driver:
They look spot on  way too cheap but well worth every penny   :signLOL:

Check the bulb housing. Make sure it's all clipped together correctly. Might be not sitting right in the lamp.

thanks rippers - Everything is clipped in and secure. I've read that sometimes the light isn't tight enough to the car then this can happen. Oddly enough my old lights start to get condensation on the same side. I am away on holiday in a couple of weeks. Might take the light off, leave it inside with some silica gel in and see what its like when i get back.

I can assure you that I've never had an issue with these lights and only sold them due to buying new outer ones.

My bro in law has a mk5 1.4 and his light flooded with water so I tightended the nuts that were loose and the seal fully home although our lights have different bolts to the standard lights. If you're not happy I'll refund you fully.

That's cool mate, no refund required. I don't doubt you never had a problem. They are used, second hand and there for anything can happen.

Disappointed but you are not to blame. Just a problem for me to solve that's all.

That's the thing mate I wouldn't sell anything that causes issues for another member especially as this reflects on my integrity as a seller and member of a forum.

£45 + VAT in the end. Not had a chance to give it a proper whirl yet but the steering feels a little tighter now, but that might be because my old bushes were slightly worn.

Not bad at all then! Let us know what you think of it once you've had a chance to have a proper drive. It's one of the many things on my to-do list. Might get some uprated dampers while I'm at it.

So it's been a while since my last post; been busy with life and saving up some money.

I recently ordered an MDI Armrest kit, only to find that the armrest console doesn't have the right sized hole. So i've had to order one of those.

My finger is now hovering over the Racingline damper kit from AwesomeGTI (https://www.awesomegti.com/shop-by-car/volkswagen/golf-mk5/racingline-performance-spring-and-damper-kit-golf-mk5/) as that was next on my list.

And finally i have been thinking wheels again. I really like the look of these. I don't normally like black wheels on a black car, but i am really digging this look.

small update on some changes on my car. I ordered an MDI kit just before Christmas and have managed to get round to install it. I found that my car didn't have the slot for the CD player in the arm rest so i had to order one of those. Luckily i tracked one down on eBay :)

old vs new :)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz363%2Fbaddevotions1%2FIMG_20170103_135057_zpsnt3sxxjm.jpg&hash=1f24b36fcffa1c8002b6949d8006f34fcecb52a5)

took quite a lot of fiddling as i realised that i couldn't just straight swap as my car has air vents in the rear and the tube feeding it got in the way. So, i have removed this. I would have preferred not to, but i don't sit in the back.

removed tube. This pipe was a little bugger to take out. Can imagine it's a pain to get back in!

all clear for the kit and new armrest now that the pipe has been removed.

Thanks Andy!

Like i've said before, i am not normally a fan of black wheels on black cars, but these just work for some reason. I really need to up my cleaning game though. I try, but am by no means a pro and have lots to learn. Tomorrow needs to be dry! lol

I've switched the MDI kit now so that it sits the same as yours; plug at the back, space at the front :D  :driver:

Today i treated myself to a pressure washer and one of those snowfoam lances. Have to say that i am pretty impressed although it does appear to burn through the car wash stuff. Anyway, i wanted to clean the car and take it up the road for a couple of pictures. I didn't go to town on the cleaning aspect and actually, come spring time, i might actually pay someone to detail it. I'd be interested to see what the results are like.

I am super, super happy with the wheels now!

Clay bar. Wow! I am never polishing a car again without using clay first. Never used it before, but today I cleaned the car using the following; rinse, snowfoam, rinse, wash, dry, clay, Poorboy's then wax. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to do the entire car, only one panel was clayed, polished then waxed. Good stuff that clay though!

not much going on since i got the wheels. Got a dog bone insert waiting to go in, but need to dedicate a bit of time to it. I did however manage to treat the car to a right good going over.... rinse, snowfoam, rinse, wash, clay, polish and then waxed. I am absolutely knackered but well pleased with the results.

Thanks dude. It was something i was keen to do for a while but couldn't commit to it. One thing i have noticed though is that i think my rear left panel has had a re-spray. The paint doesn't seem as good as the rest and is slightly dull. There is a scratch on that panel which i need to get sorted at some point so might investigate..
