So been looking into getting vagcom and seems to be about £300 but what I'm wanting to know is what's the most expensive part of the kit. Is it the cable or the disc
-
As far as I know the cable contains a key that will allow VCDS to work. It's the software research and development you are paying for. The cheap cables are clones of the original ones that some shady so and so has put together
-
You are paying for the cable and software license. The software is free to download
-
Will the software work without a proper/cloned cable?

Only cracked or old software works with the specific dodgy cable
-
Thanks for the help, certainly ain't cheap
-
It's well worth it though if you intend on doing your own mods / maintenance.

Whilst I agree that everyone should play for the proper version and licence, not everyone is as rich as eachother.
There are clone cables on ebay for around £45 and they work with VCDS version 12.12. Does pretty much everything but doesn't let you update it which isn't a big deal.
Not saying everyone should do this but as I said people come from different backgrounds and pay grades in life.

Kinda get what your saying and it's everyone's own personal choice what they buy. I got a genuine Cable as they hold their money really well so when I'm done with it I'll still be able to sell the cable on for close to what I paid. I also have the full benefit of all updates and have helped the company develop their products that will ultimately end up helping me out. If you think of it with future value factored in it's an extra £50 from the eBay special job and in my mind worth every penny :happy2:
-
I bought my genuine cable in 2009 for £257. Its paid for itself about 3 times over.
-
Keep an eye out on the forum I paid £190 for my genuine hex+can cable and recommend it. I'm not a genius when it comes to using it but even I've managed to check basic things and make tweaks here and there as well as checking fault codes which in itself is a priceless thing to be able to do
-
Well that's a genuine kit purchased off Amazon. Does anyone know if it can be used with an ipad as laptop's in my household seem to be a thing of the past
-
You'll need a usb adaptor but yes it can. @Kieran1990gti (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=15117)
-
I thought it was Windows based so you'd need Ross Tech VCDS Mobile?

@r5gtt (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11199) how did you get it working off a iPad? Would make my life a million times easier if that was possible!

With one of these usb leads.

-
That USB adapter looks the business. Where about did you purchase that, pc world etc
-
It's proper useful and a blessing from my niece who gave it to me.

If you've got time post a video of your set up on an iPad with the adaptor please.
-
Can you actually get the VCDS software for the iPad?
-
Don't think so. Or at least not 6 months ago when I spoke to them. I'll like to see VCDS working on an iPad.
-
That adapter looks like mini - USB to USB, 8 pin (Apple lightning) to USB
-
VCDS is windows based. Unless you can emulate windows from within IOS then you won't be running it on the iPad. Cheap windows tablets do the job though
Clones can be had for sub £20 from china. The £45 UK ones are those importing them in bulk and adding a hefty markup for the hassle/risk they are taking.
-
Sorry got a little confused with iPad and cheap pads lol
-
So frustrating ive lost my cable
-
So the cable came and all the software and manuals are on a USB. Can I upload this too the computer and copy it too another USB stick and use on any laptop
-
Youll have to install it on each computer you want to use it on..... it wont run directly off the USB
-
Right that's fine so as long as I have a copy on another USB I can just plug in and upload it too any computer

Hey Dan,
Where could I get said cloned cable for ~£20. I used to have the original but cant justify the expense of it this time around.
Thanks in advance,
Faz

So been trying too connect too the car and I have a ross tech cable from Germany but it's under the name auto intern and I can't connect.
Very frustrating as it's slightly more expensive as hell. Laptop I got to use is a bailer and runs off windows 7 any thoughts?

Have you gone into settings and tried different ports to find one that works? Then press save.
-
You need to find out which com port works as it's a pain in the :booty: at times.
-
Stupid question but what's this com port use speak of
-
It's not stupid lol its a question :P
It's basically your USB port you're using to connect to the car. it's lengthy to explain and you may not understand what I'm faffing on about either :stupid:
You need to go to start and then control panel on your laptop. then system and then click on harware and then below you will see DEVICE MANAGER. then scroll down to ports (COM & LPT) and you'll see the driver's already installed on your laptop. make sure you count how many there are. as you will you plug your vag lead in it all should disappear and then reappear with your vag lead added to it as a new port. Double click it and then you'll get another box with labels: General - port settings - Driver - details. Double CLICK update drivers and you'll see a list go to (No not at this time) and click next. then you'll get another box saying install software automatically (Recommeneded) and hopefully you should be able to use one of the ports. Can't remember exactly but close enough.
-
Thanks going to give it a go tomorrow
-
Modern VCDS doesn't need you to establish and select the correct COM port, you should just install the software/drivers, open the software up and go in to options, select 'USB' (not the com ports) and click test. It should find the cable - if it doesn't then you have a driver issue.
-
What's the best way too deal with driver issues then. I used the USB driver they supplied me and loaded it up. Opened the programme and it says there is a newer version so updated and it still can't find the car. When cable is plugged in there is 2 green lights
-
I hate to say this..... But are you sure it is 100% legit and genuine? If it was genuine then you should be able to download the software from the RossTech site
Check in Device Manager to ensure you see a Rosstech genuine interface (or whatever the wording is) and not an 'unknown'. If you have, post a screenshot of the little box that pops up detaining connection status, driver/firmware versions etc. (should pop up when you click test)
-
It's the same as a ross tech cable just the German version. I got it new from Amazon and also the USB driver it came with uploads ross tech. I'll screen shot it and upload to here

Random but have you turned ignition on when trying to find the car?

usb :ashamed: sorry it's been a while since I've done this set up.
German and more expensive sounds like a copy ?
-
I am far from a killjoy on things like this and almost can't believe I am saying it, but I would urge people to buy the original cable and software. It's such a great bit of kit and not produced by a massive corporation, so keeping the thing going and supported by buying the original would be my take. I have got much use from mine.
:happy2:

Little update I just installed another folder from the driver that I received. Plugged in and found the car no problem what so ever thanks for the help chaps.
