Title: Private number plate transfer?

So my dad's buying a new car from a dealership (not VAG before you ask lol) and he's got a certificate for a private plate. My question is will we be able to sign the V5C on the day and transfer the numberplate straight away online?? i.e. drive away with his plates on. Or do we need to come home and wait for the new V5C in his name before we can put on the plates?

The dealership can do it for you as they will pay for the transfer for you if you  ask them to do it as part of the deal like i did
