X1, maybe X3 at a pinch, XC60 etc...roads here are really narrow!
Mazda seems to have some good deals on CX 3 & 5...
Seen a nice diesel auto tiguan here, but unbelievably expensive! Apparently because "it's so rare sir"...no shortage of them on auto trader...
I really have no experience of this segment, other than very occasional rentals...when i was very impressed with the new Qashcai (no idea how to spell it!) But that was a manual.
Oh, and Just to be more awkward, I'm fairly sure I need an auto....
Can anybody give me the benefit of their experience?
Thanks guys.

I have had a 2009 Freelander 2 HSE for 2 years. I think it pretty good and proper off road ability, do you need that ? Many bits for it are Ford so quite cheap to run. 2.2 diesel does about 30 mpg.
-
Thanks for that, but not planning offroad. A soft roader is really all I need.
-
Do you want it to be 4x4/ 4 motion or 2wd? As this may alter your option choices.
-
I have had a Tiguan for three years, originally it was a Golf on stilts though more recently it has got its own identity a bit more. I love it, but are you looking at buying older? I have had a lot of age related things go (rear diff, Haldex ECU rotted, stuck caliper etc).
It wasn't until late 2010 I think that the Tig fitted DSG, until then it was a conventional torque converter.

I could perhaps get away with 2wd suv type thing, but if i am going to do this, might as well go the 4 motion, 4wd type route?
Reason is 2 things...
1. My lane is now being used by farmer/ builders (there will be a site ongoing for some time it seems...) and the ammount of mud n sh1te is unbelievable, even for remotest cornwall! My eddy can now only make it up the steep hill, given a run up, if i stop that's it- stuck!
2. An old injury to my left leg is giving me gip, and the HD clutch now fitted in the eddy is now killing me.
Perhaps a 4x4 DSG performance golf is the answer? Would that then be a 6 or 7 R?

That's helpful, thanks. I will research this a bit more.
Looking at 2010 or newer

Subaru Forester 2.5XT?

What's your budget mate?

Ahh ok,Was going to suggest a sq5

Subaru Forester 2.5XT?
Had one of these a few years back as a firms car...great, but wouldn't want to fund it out of my own pocket! Fuel economy horrendous when tramping on, to the extent that the limited range was an issue, even with "free" fuel!
-
Some useful ideas here, thanks.
Q5 an X5 not viable due to physical size in the Cornish lanes even if in budget. Cayenne for size too....thats bigger than a bl00dy transit!
Have tried brother's Volvo XC 90, but that too big as well (they do seem to be good value tho?).
The Tiguan i looked at was 2009 and £12k! No leather or climate!! Was 4x4 tho. From the look of the stick it was an old style/conventional auto, as the lever did not look like in a golf DSG. I would think they would look the same?
Any else got any experience of these?
Reading about..the Newer Qashcai is getting some stick for poor quality/reliability issues, any experience?
TBH similar quality issues (as well as prices) put me off audi Q3, any thoughts?
Might spend a bit more dosh if it was something i actually wanted, rather than needed. Afraid i view this sort of thing as a utility rather than a pleasure...hence struggling to make headway with choices.

Try the Freelander , i was very impressed and had never been in one before. In HSE spec they are really excellent. The 4wd is a bit like 4motion anyway. You can get one like mine 2009 for about £12k with 70k.
-
Not sure if this helps but I've just bought an 2009 XC60 with lots of toys on it for £11.5k so your budget would get you an even better one. It's a only done 60k miles too. And although this isn't for everyone, the D5 engine maps to 240bhp.

Well....Have tried a whole load over the past few weeks.
Used.
Skoda Octavia diesel dsg scout 4x4 probably the best, but very niche come resale time, he's been months trying to shift it!
Impresed with Qashcai, but not at all liking the daft glass roof.
New...now considering a 3 yr rental??? With Gap insurance!!!
New seat Ateca ok, but felt very wooden handling, and no diesel 44 autos yet. Unbelievably you can get this suv with a 1.0 engine! They could only get me a diesel manual to test drive, but they do dsg allegedly...
Renault Kadjar excellent ride, handling very good reviews...but typical French flimsiness very apparent. They do give a 4 yr warantee now tho. But...no diesel 44 auto. Otherwise might have been tempted for a rental?
New skoda kodiak too big, and a seven seater. My kids long gone...
Kia sportage very nice, but not now that cheap, and 7 year warantee no interest to me as a rental, will be long gone by then! Very hard to find diesel auto at all, never mind used to buy.
New Tiguan therefore currently my favourite, as ticks all my boxes, 44 diesl auto etc and either 150 or 200 hp 2ltr engines.
I was amazed to find it had a heated steering wheel as well as the seats. Never seen this other than on a volvo before- lovely! Do the golf 7s have this option?
Other thing of nterest is that tiguan rental good value compared with much cheaper Kadjar. Broker says this because depreciation on Renault so high.
Didn't try new land rovers, audi, bmw etc or volvos as more than i want to pay for a tool to get me to work. Tried my pals new X4, very nice, but besides the cost... That whole 44 coupe thing seems a bit odd to me? He loves it, after 3 last being X3s. His advice was that 44 a must down here in this type of car. That said, he borrows my old cabby to shift his boat, as bmw wanted £1k for a tow bar!
I really don't want to comit more than £18k of my own money to this, so a rental tigaun looks likely atm. 8 week min delivery...
Any thoughts fellas?

Did you consider the Audi Q3?
Considered, but generally unwilling to pay Audi tax, especially on a vehicle I need rather than want...also have strong aversion to local dealer since I went there many years ago to buy a new A1 when they came out first, and was treated like a piece of sh1t by hooray henry types on sales team (too busy then seling A6's)...they actually refused to lift the bonnet off so I could see the engine!
As above re depreciation, looked at audi lease, and basically you seem to get a Q2 for Tiguan money.
Didn't try a Q2, susect its too small for 7 hour motorway run, and too new/trendy to get decent orice offers?
-
So, decision finally had to be made; thanks for all inputs above.
I have "bought" (actually leased for 3 years, with an optional 4th) a new Tiguan. They nowadays look very much like the poor mans Q3, so not too offensive for an SUV? It should serve nicely as a tool for work.
150HP diesel BMT, DSG, 4 Motion, SE Nav. White - so already christened the "Chav Wag" by my daughters ( no offence intended to any other owners of white SUV's who may be reading)
A stock car gives 3 weeks delivery, as currently 11 week wait min on build orders. People are actually willing to wait 39 weeks for delivery of the Tig R-Line :stupid:
Being stock means I must have a few optional extras that I would not have otherwise wasted my money on, such as keyless entry, and an electric tailgate! But have missed out on my heated MF steering wheel with flappy paddles (£250).
Astounds me what extras people "need"; that said I am unfortunately old enough to remember poo-pooing electric mirrors!
Debate on Tiguan forum atm as to wether auto self park systems can be used to park in perpendicular bays - facing inwards! :indifferent:
