Title: Bryans Black GTI -
Post by: gobbleplease on January 25, 2010, 10:41:05 pm
Ok, We will start out with a few standard pictures at the moment and a little "how i find it"

Well i bought the car in December and recieved a nice 2 year warranty on the GTI and decided that i would leave it standard For at least the first year so that any problems that arrive could be delt with and replaced with out any Modifcation get out clauses.
This hasnt worked though as the slippery slope has started already..........DOH !

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2Febay091.jpg&hash=7f6d8dab44c8b7c5c2e612d07bcfdaee42c0a137)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2Febay090.jpg&hash=f264c4f5f5fad29493c0888ecf6ef2f88668e882)

I plan to do a few track days probably 3-4 per year or however much the Mrs / Bank account will allow, my aim with the car is too make it look good, handle well , with more speed and track reliability, although with a fair degree of comfort as it will be my daily driver.

having had a couple of GTIs in the past (im a golf guy) including a minted mk2 GTI & a Nicely modded mk4 1.8t, I decided it was time for a return to the GTI, with the mk5 which i had fancied from the day it was released.

My must have list for the GTI was pretty short, with only standard tartan seats and AC, so this meant that i could have a totally minted unmarked 36k, late 06 plate, black, poverty spec GTI for just under £12k with a 2 year warranty !

Anyhoo, my first impressions of the golf were it looked good but sat far too high, it was also a nice place to be, very comfortable and Brilliant to drive, cornering and performance were alot better than i expected and i did expect them to be good.
So it was looking good for a place to start my most extensive project yet.

LET THE MODS ROLL IN :pomppomp:

First on will be my 18" Monza 2s which have been painted smoked chrome with a black background !

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2Fsortit051.jpg&hash=680fd560c8057d7fc6fa66b8627b68e028ac4ae2)

These have already been fitted with spanking new Centre caps ill get a few pics up with them on the car Soon!

Ive finally got round to fitting my first mod, OEM Monza 2s. I decided to go with the monza 2s due to them looking great on the car and the fact i wanted to keep the OEM offset as i would be fitting a BBK and coilovers as this would ensure that i would not get any rubbing issues at my desired ride height. There were a few aftermarket wheels that i liked but i couldnt find any of these with an offset higher than 45...... :sad1:

The 18" monzas i recieved from ebay were in good condition with no kerbing although suffered from milking so a recondtion was on the cards. As much as i like the oem finish i decided that the cost and maintenance wasnt worth it so i decided to go for a painted finish that would replicate the Mk6 GTI monzas this was done in a shadow chome finish with the wheel inners painted black and the outsides silver

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2Fsortit051.jpg&hash=680fd560c8057d7fc6fa66b8627b68e028ac4ae2)

As good a job as the painters done, i wasnt happy that they had decided to coat the hub face in paint so i had too take  this to my work and buff of the excess

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2Fsortit052.jpg&hash=b828858d6b10cd5ace42e0c2113ba851d881e0da)

so after this was recified it was off with the 17s and on with the 18s, a large helping of coppaslip, new OEM centre caps, Goodyear eagle F1s and some nice new Locking wheel nuts

Yea a totally wierd thing happened in scotland today this big bright light thing appeared from the clouds and upset my camera which is constantly set for dark pictures

That and the other side of my car is coverd in bird sh1t, so decided to a picture of the other side which meant that that i was jammed up against the fence and even with the Zoom fully out thats as far away as i could get...Alright im just sh*t at photos  :P

Would love to see some proper shots of those rims. Red Robin did a similar thing to his Monzas to fix the white worm issue though I think his was lighter.

More pics please

I only managed to get a couple of bits and bobs fitted today first this, which i went for instead of the plain black VW badge, ive not seen anyone with this fitted either which was also a factor

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2Fsort034.jpg&hash=3f10072e799491b3ad1c89fc944e4b7fbb4f19de)

Ive never liked the big massive ariel on the gti either so i changed it to an OEM sharran stubby which is ultra short. I think this really tidys up the roof line, and a must have bargain, for Only £8

( If you intend to fit the sharran ariel to the mk5 golf you will need to chop a few mm off the threaded ariel connector, this gives it a flush fit with the base plate, if you dont you will be left with an unsightly gap between the body and the base plate)

Think the stubby aerial looks way better than the standard 300ft one you get. Reminds me of a dodgem when I see that aerial

Has the smaller aerial impacted/degraded your reception for the radio?
Title: Re: Bryans Black GTI -
Post by: gobbleplease on February 18, 2010, 01:45:29 am
I dont notice any differance what so ever, seems the same quality TBH. I do live in an area where there is a strong signal though
so it will probably require a trip out with the signal area to really test it,

its not that important to me anyway i usually just listen to CDs or my ipod, and could count the number of jouneys i put the radio on in one year, on one hand

Cheers ! :happy2:

Anyway today was a really nice day and i should off really done some of my exterior mods, but i didnt have much time on my hands so i decided to finish the interior off.

I always liked the interior and thought it was a nice place to be so i didnt want to go overboard, so i decided to just fit a couple of things.

1) Aluminium climatronic surrounds
2) Trim mounted 106 gti red badge
3) Dimpled aluminium mirror adjuster
4) Poppy coral
5) Aluminium GTi seat inlays
6) Carbon Fibre Tax disk Holder

When i was in the middle of doing this i left the car door open and went in the house to get a cloth to clean the window, when i came back there was a cat doing a piss on my seat :surprised: the bugger managed to jump out the car and just past my foot before i could made contact with it, lucky little ba5tard, anyway this added an extra 2 hours on to my fitting time to clean up its piss and footprints that were all over the seats.

got to say my Fav mods today have to be the climatronic surrounds, and Red GTI badge they really draw the eye and set off the interior. Im really happy with the inside now and i think all parts work well together to brighten up the cabin even the poppy coral makes a big differance IMO  :happy2:

had my old monzas painted on my old Black GTI, think they look gret and solve a known issue too! Nice one!

you thinking about colour coding the skirts and bumpers and some R32/ED30 rear lights? think there's some lights on the 'bay' right now!

Ive already got the r32s mate just not fitted them yet, ive collected all my bits and pieces just got to fit them Now

Ok i had a bit of spare time today so i removed the front and rear GTI badges and replaced them with the red anniversary rabbit items, I initially fitted the rear rabbit badge although i wasnt feeling it so i removed it and just left it with the GTI letering

I also removed the fog lights and lamin Xd them. I went for the yellow euro look which i think looks

I also replaced all bulbs with osram nightbreakers and phillips bluevision (sidelights). The visability has improved although i thought the light colour would of been a crisper white, unfortuanatly this isnt the case

Next week its custom mirrors, inpros and R32 rear lights.
Id also like to add that i bought the car in december and ive still not washed it yet, it seems to be holding up pretty well considdering the weather we have had

At the weekend i fitted my boot protector from bootbuddy, it is made from thick plastic so will protect the inside of my boot from the damage that could be caused from jamming my mountain bike in and also my manky dog. It is a great fit and easy to move in and out once it is put together. Im really happy with it although at £100+ I should be  (Didnt actually realise it was that expensive untill it arrived) :ashamed:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2F0033.jpg&hash=c9098d5dc5731eab7de1693c1b1efdb15f1c765e)

Anyways, time for some mods. On saturday i fully dismantled my both mirrors and fitted smoked inpro side blinkers, It was a bit of a fiddly task on the first mirror which took me approx 1.30 hours, although this did include a thourough clean of the internals, red line customising, removing the rub strip from the OEM blinker & transfering it to the inpros, regresing the heated mirror earth slider point and cleaning and lubing all electrical contacts as they were corroded. The second mirror took about 45mins, although now i know how its done i reccon it should only take 20 mins to fit the both  :happy2:

Continuing the red line theme on the front of the car, i added the red lines to the wing mirror shells, which i think looks
this is something that ive not seen done before and i think its worked well.  Im also glad the white blinkers are away as they dont flatter on black at all. Im really happy with the way things are going and dont want to over do it, Ive got 3 more visual mods to fit and then its off to star P for some performance parts to be fitted.

You really need to stand back and take them in as a whole TC, its hard to see how they work from photos. Ive been having mixed views about the Euro fogs too, but they are my fav Mod so far

Next week its time for the r32 rear lights to be fitted, the following Saturday my ed30 vallance goes for a greenouse-esk paint job. Its going to have the middle section fitted with the same red 5 mm pin stripe as is on the mirrors and spray laquerd over the top to solidify it. Finally it will be fitted with german pressed plates, then it will be time to get some items on that i can actually feel :jumpmove:

If you want the inpros mate try inprolights.com i got mine for £26 including delivery a few weeks ago, i dont even think they were on offer . :happy2:

Cheers for the comments guys

I'm unsure about the InPros... are they worth the effort/cost?  Is the effect good? Somebody help!!!  :rolleye:

Have a look at my pics mate and decide, I think they are a must on a black car, not sure if id bother on silver or white, i would on red and grey though, The first one is a bit of a pain as you are not sure if you are pulling in the correct places but once the first one is done the next is only a 10 minute job unless you are cleaning, lubing ect. Id say worth it though :happy2:

I notice you have put aside the whole of next Saturday to do the R32 lights. Its only a 2 minute job with a 10 mil spanner.

Are you a builder.   :signLOL:

Nothing ever takes me two minutes by the way..................................................... Well one thing does, but its best we dont talk about that

I don't feel alone in my predicament...it's like a weight off my shoulders  :rolleye:

If I could get ahold of bright enough indicator bulbs, I think I'd rather get the indicators laminxed. From what I understand, the inpro ones apparently just have a black base so looks darker but isn't very dark. I want stealthed indicators.

Got a link for the inpro's? Can't seem to find them?

They have went up in price mate, its back to  (£35.14) Delivery is free though !
The link has not went right to it for some reason, just click side repeaters and VW  :happy2:

you are correct just a black base, with the normal clear lense. The quality of the inpros are very good and well up to OEM levels.
Stealth wolf have you used laminx before ? After applying it to the fogs im not that convinced by the material, it is pretty thick and not that easy to work with on curves. I will say though that even the smoked covering lets light though pretty well (my mate has it on his indicators), like you said though the small vw repeaters arnt the best so this might cause problems.

Well at the start of golf ownership, i hated the big red blob lights at the rear of the car, but over time i have actually started to like them, thus delaying the addition of the R32 rears.
Today i decided to go for it and fit the r32s rears, they are deffo a big improvement over standard on black cars and i love them !

The only thing now is im not sure about the rear end with these fitted :surprised:. I think it doesnt look right and im thinking its the VW badge. I liked the silver VW badge with the silver GTI badge but now the addition of the r32 lights and red gti badge makes it look out of place.

My options were go back to standard silver badges or try and remove and paint the rear badge. I decided the later so i removed the rear badge today (without breaking any clips  ) to give me an idea of how it would look.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2F012-1.jpg&hash=a20f8753a9372880a7107aba7feb5c7d741819f6)

From this i think it would look better in black, so im going to rub it down and paint it satin black tonight !

Another modification i done today was fill up the tyres with air which has been my best mod yet !

I might even wash it soon  :innocent:

A little update, the car has had a lot of work done over the last few days

KW coilovers
Eibach ARBs
WALK
AP Racing brakes
VWR Lower Mount
Blue Flame Exhaust

The car has only been dropped 20-25mm on the coilovers and the arbs are set to hard on the rears, its hard for me to tell exactly what differance which item has made, but this cars handeling is absolutly amazing now, it just corners and grips ! understeer has been improved no end, the damping is superb and and im surprised that the ride quality hasnt suffered to badly either. The car still handles very neutal with the ARB settings and if you lift of mid corner in the dry you can feel the cars rear end starting to tug like it wants to break free but it still just stays nicly in line ! The steering has also been improved all you need to do is just turn the wheel a fraction and the car istantly reacts !, moves over and turns in without drama or body roll !
it really has been a stunning transformation !

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2F8202f106.jpg&hash=e9d3b117b7fed4c7d0eb79e2cc177edb62712794)

The APs Pro 5000 are amazing, my best mod yet with out a doubt ! they are so powerfull and just stop the car with out you even realising that they are working. These are so controlable and managable, i really cant think how it would be possible to improve these on the mk5 chassis they are just perfect and so well ballanced.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Foo147%2Freidtastic%2F06fabf30.jpg&hash=27a9496fff8c200204498e4cdbe6361cd6a285d3)

The engine mount also has seemed to tighten things up, its hard to explain, but the the acceleration feels .............more solid ? with a better uptake, there is more vibration and feel through the pedals but no more virbration noises ? its hard to put in to words but the car feels differant and crisper if you know what i mean

The car has changed for the good, its harder more focused and in all honestly i cant think of anything id rather be driving its coming on a treat and hopefully will be finshed pretty soon !

Ill put up some pics of the blue flame tomorrow i forgot all bout it in the driving exitment ( Even though its prtty hard to forget about   )

Mind me asking where you got the brakes and discs from? And also how much you paid for them?
Car is starting to look really good, though may I suggest either getting a full length number plate, or consider getting a US spec bumper, as the rear of the car (and the front) looks spoiled by those large gaps either side.
Title: Re: Bryans Black GTI -
Post by: gobbleplease on April 19, 2010, 12:11:12 am
The brakes are custom jobbies from Dave b on here, I'm not sure if he has a constant supply off them, as far as I'm aware there were only two sets made, you would be better speaking to Dave about them mate. I think the road versions that rr has retail at about 1750 but can be had for about the 1600 mark if you know where to look. If you are looking for some stoppers wheather they are Aps or not I would say speak too Dave as I've seen a few other kits he has and they look ace.

I have pressed full length plates to go on mate, but I'm waiting for my new front splitter to be painted first, I also need to replace a bit of that plastic mesh trim as a stone has smashed it to pieces, I'm getting there though

next week it's rns 510 and carbon fibre dash if I find the time.

Blueflame exhaust fitted now, im a bit disapointed that blueflame didnt supply exhaust clamps so i had to find my own !
otherwise its a grate system. It grumbles and pops on the over-run, not boomy at all under normal driving and on motorways.
Its quite loud on cold start up but when its been running for a wee while it calms right down, its got a nice tone when ripping it too although i did expect it to be louder.

BIG PIPES

also fitted was the RNS 510, although due to needing an ariel adaptor to convert the twin to single ive decided to remove it until i get the adaptor. You can probably see from the picture that the vents and lower trim has suffered from some air freshner weepage so im going to replace that when it gets refitted !

Yea the blueflame is sweeeet !

The feel and response has improved no-end Pete. If you turn the wheel, even just a touch the car responds instantly without roll or any dramas, the stiffer bushes ect give improved feel through the wheel and pedals and it really let's you feel what the engine is doing and what kind of ground and grip the front wheels are finding. The damping is great, it just works and really soaks up everything perfectly with out the oem squirm, basically you don't even think about the suspension anymore it just works and I can't think of how it can be improved. The arbs are great too the only time I think I would benifit from oem arbs are on corners with pot holes (they don't even need to be that deep) the car suffers from spin when you even apply a little throttle on the power out, it wasn't as bad on oem arbs but whenit finds it's grip again it grips harder than oem, so it's swings and roundabouts really but like I said in all other situations the updated arbs make a differance.
Obviously with all this the ride comfort suffers a bit on rough ground but it's better than standard at high speed over uneven surfaces IMO. The ride hasn't suffered too much it's just deep low speed pot holes that really does my box in

Just to make you aware that the material of the trim you're about to replace changed at some point and VW only supply the newer greyer one. It's obvious they're different but I'm having to live with it.

Ok giac remapped now , pump file with the new increased torque maps. i never had the cash for the select module, so i decided to just leave that at the moment.
The mid range torque this thing spits out now is bloody mental ! I was also advised to fit an HPFP before the ITG intake as i would probably end up with fuel cuts.
Phoned up Awesome tonight and ordered myself an APR pump so ill hopefully get that fitted soon then on with the itg

Also fitted my ed 30 front lip with red line accent, still not sure about it though.

Not much to do Now ! A few weeks ago i got my APR high preasure fuel pump fitted and my ITG intake. The car now feels so much smoother to drive and the Mid range has been mega beefed up   . The ITG intake sounds great too, it wooshes under hard acceleration, with lift off resulting in a dumping "Kutchch" sort of noise. I think im going to need to sell the RNS 510 now as i dont listen to the radio anymore, the sound of the ITG and Blueflame are music to my ears !

I also done some logs with my racelogic performance box (very accurate performance meter) to see what kind of 0-60 times ive been getting

Standard GTI Manual - 7.2 seconds

Giac Updated Torque Maps, S3 intercooler and Blueflame Exhaust - 6.0 seconds

As above with the addition of the ITG intake and APR HPFP - 5.6 seconds

The newest (last run) was taken just after the hardware was fitted with no ECU adaptation time, in 27oC heat with crap tyres so i think with new tyres on a colder day ill be looking at the low 5 seconds, which i think is amazing for a k03 GTI and FWD car in general, no matter what the engine

Once ive done a 1/4 mile ill post up the differance the HPFP and intake has made to this

A really nice looking car, absolutely love the front badge, the red line and mirrors!

How do you find the ride since switching to the 18's? Im tempted but worried it will be too harsh a ride and will lose the comfort?

some spacers in the back, perhaps 8mm you are all set. Good solid build up

:happy2: nice looking motor you have there. Love the look of the brakes and the nice details with the red stripes.

Thanks guys !

Honestly mate just go for the 18s I noticed no change in ride quality what so ever, I was quite surprised as on all other cars where I have upped the wheel size I've noticed a differance.

Yea mate the spacers would add a bit beef and look good but Im a bit sketchy about using spacers for track work, as I've heard too much horror stories about people loosing wheels

Do like the pinstripes. Personally would have gone for painted calipers to match the car. Maybe in black with "GTI" in red outline?

^^^^^^^^
Yea they are not an ideal colour for the car but i think it would be a crime too loose the AP racing decals, in favour of a "GTI" logo, although im thinking of having them powder coated Red and black when i send them away to be serviced next.
