Right, i'm sorry for another brake thread but just after some opinions please. Don't really want to break the bank. I would really like a 2piece disc setup but that is going to be upwards of 1k at least, unless a nice bargain comes up. I have an ED30 so i am thinking of changing to a set of 1.2s so i have more scope for different calipers and i really think they suit the mk5 aswell.
So....R32/S3 is out as they are just too heavy.
It's going to between MK7R setup or Brembo 18Z i think. Are the 340mm discs that are used on the mk7 setup the same people use with TTRS caliper?? If so then that setup could be a choice as well.
I'm really wanting to keep the weight as close to the standard setup as possible. I'm presuming 1.2s are lighter than Pescaras? I do prefer the look of the 18Z setup but the disc option isn't really a straight fit. Also is the TTS 340mm quite a bit lighter then ML350 (i think) disc?
Sorry if i've rambled on a bit. Basically i'm asking, if you're not going the whole hog 2piece setup 1k+ then what is the next best setup haha?
Thanks in advance Adam

Have a read of this mate, it's got lots of good info about disc and caliper weights, fitment etc for the mk7 R setup:
http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=108106.msg1046983.msg#1046983
I've just updated the thread - I got mine fitted yesterday. If you're tracking the car I'd say the TTRS caliper with 340mm disc setup would be preferable, but unless you can find some second hand you're probably looking at 1k at least.
That thread should arm you with a bit of extra knowledge anyway.

Look in the section marked Mods at the top of the page for ideas.
For £1k look at the Brembo 4 pot NQSBBK.....more than enough. Then Mk7 set up, After that you're into 18z (pretty sure Killer brakes do a fitting kit for those) then TTRS set up with either solid discs or 2 piece....check out AKS website for those or look through Vagbremtechnic website (of which Alex at AKS is a distributor).
Concider swapping out the rear calipers for S3 with s3 rear vented discs too....better all round balance then......or the caddy rear calipers, rich83 has these....he did a review somewhere on here.

I put the tts 340mm discs on mine, noticeable difference in the steering compared to when I had r32 345mm discs

Cheers for the info. What calipers are you running @RetroRaz (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6494) ?

2kg per disc less than the 345mm. Quite a saving

So when you use the tts discs do you use the r32/s3 pads or do you use tts pads. Maybe a sill question but I'm not sure and I'm going to be changing discs and pads soonish

Use the same R32/S3 pads. They cover the whole disc with 340s so you also avoid any lip forming once the discs are worn.
-
Get the right pad for your caliper... there is a slight difference in pad between the R32 and the S3 version.

Thank you. That would be better having no lip on there :happy2:
Yeah I will double check it before I buy thank you :drinking:

For £600 you can get 4 pot toureg brembos, lines, 330mm merc discs, pads, spigot rings and bolts.
Let me know if you want the link to the ebay seller as I have this kit and very impressed.
Yes please fella, pop the link up somewhere and I will have a look
-
That seems like a good deal. Is it just a simple bolt straight on kit or do you need anything else apart from fluid?

I guess you're asking me?
And yes all you need is included. Just need to change or top up your brake fluid if you lose any.
-
interesting thread. I've wondered about a brake upgrade what with how quickly the standard set up fades under more enthusiastic driving conditions. £1k+, for me, is too much. These eBay jobbies seem to represent good value.

Sorted a pair of mk7 pp calipers!!! Just waiting for them to arrive. Think I will give them a refurb. May aswell go for the S3 310mm rears while I'm on, so on the look out for them now.
I'm after discs with the silver anti corrosion on it. Is this standard on a lot of discs now or do I have to specify it? Also, what are thoughts on the the M-tec or Vagbremetics 340mm j-hook discs?

Good choice! The 310mm rears seem rare, and command a premium by the way.
I just went for OEM Pagid discs and pads. Nothing wrong with them. I'm sure the fancy discs are good, but if you're looking to get a bit of extra stopping power out of the setup you might be better putting the money towards some fast road pads.
-
The VBT 340mm J hook discs are a rip off IMO. Mtec are decent I think @xjay1337 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7542) uses them.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272122833683
They are the advert for the mk4 5x100 but if you send a message to him he does the same kit with correct bolts but with discs that fit the mk5 instead for the same price. Also can choose whatever colour and logo you want.
Just thought, will this fit in the standard 17" wheels or only 18"?
-
Took delivery of my calipers today. First thing..........Jesus they weigh a bit!!!! Coupled with the 340mm discs am i going to feel the weight over the 312's or does the braking performance out weigh the con of the weight? Next thing refurb? i'm quite handy with tools and do most jobs on my cars and bikes. Is it just a case of buying a refurb kit? or will i need any specialist tools to do the calipers? cheers
-
Aye, theyre huge. Standard 312mm calipers, flexi lines and pads comes to 14kg mind, excluding discs so the difference probably isn't AS big as you might think. I didn't notice much if any difference when I went 345mm
Cars with these brakes tend to have more alloy parts too which offsets the weight

Caliper and carrier.

So thats 18.5kg per side... plus 500g for pads per corner?

Zinc spray that can take a bit of heat is all you need. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Zinc-Spray-Grey-Primer-Anti-Rust-Heat-Resistant-350-c-Galvanise-Metal-Steel-/121856500282?hash=item1c5f36a23a:g:u8UAAOSw~gRVlnvU
I'm sure somewhere must sell it in single cans though!

@rich83 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=709) What caliper is that? Looks completely different to the GTI PP i've got?

That's an S3 caliper
You've opted for the mk7 gti calipers?
-
This is the mk7 PP caliper and carrier, same as the latest S3 and mk7 R. 7kg.
Lighter than the old R32/S3 caliper and carrier.

Again, I'd advise anyone looking into this to read the big thread I linked to in the first reply of this thread. Lots of info.
