I dont do a lot of miles and dont go on track but I do like a good blast down the B roads so what is a decent tyre that'll do the job without forking out over £100 a tyre?
-
Michelin PS3 are sub £100 I think.
-
Hankook are a good mid range tyre
-
If anyone says Rainsport 3s I will go medieval.... @xjay1337 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7542)

Good price. Think I paid 104 a while ago.
Thread concluded.

Bridgestone tyres tend to suffer with Stepping Stone tread wear issues which make them incredibly noisey over other choices of tyre.
Hankook like has been said are a decent all rounder and a good shout if your on a budget.

Yup, I also went for PS4's! Very good indeed.

nice rain sport 3s Andy :signLOL:
-
Dunlop Sportmaxx often considered better than pilot sports too
-
Sorry am I missing something here from the thread title. Goodyear f1 as3's are about 80 quid on camskill.
-
I had Pirelli P Zero's on both of my mk5 GTi's and they were excellent. Great grip and they lasted well too.
-
Vredesteins are good. I had a set on my clk55 and that had no problems in the set with 360bhp and 380 lb ft torque.
Once the goodyears are shagged on the golf I'll go for a set of Vred's or Michelin's.
-
I never understand these posts..... What is the best tyre, excluding two of the best tyres on the market.... Because they are a couple of quid per corner too much.... When most people probably piss more than that up the wall on a Friday or Saturday night.....
Find an extra couple of quid and fit some Michelin PS4. One of the very best all rounders you will find
-
Dan has a point, buy the best tyres you can afford. As Red Robin told me when I asked about this years ago, the rubber in contact with the road at each corner is about the size of a CD disc, so you want that to be the best possible. :driver:
-
I agree with Dan here - people have no issues with skimping on their tyres despite being just as important as brakes in terms of safety.
Im sick to death of people who have no problems with paying £50 per month for the latest iphone or £100 per month for the best sky package but wont pay an extra £25 extra for a decent tyre!
Whats even more amazing are people who fork out tens of thousands on a high performance car, thousands again on mods but dont want to pay more than £50 a corner for tyres. Go figure.
To @Tigger (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11615) - the PS4's* are around £110 per tyre fitted. Not an earth breaking amount -you would have to ask for reasons why NOT to for them for that price!
*Other premium branded tyres are available.

Ignorance and penny pinching are rife in the car world unfortunately. Too much money spent on the latest in thing, and not enough spent on the essentials.
I encourage more people to fit 'Ling Long Sunny Champ Fy Dollar I find ditch 4 you' tyres to their Ed30s, so that they slide off the roads and bump up values of the remaining ones.....and provide me with a lower mileage drivers seat
PS4s are surprisingly good in the cold. -4 this morning and no problems with cornering grip. Traction is pretty reasonable with a modulated throttle too

I'm pretty sure the OP changed the thread title when he started getting loads of suggestions for Michelin and Goodyear.
But I'm with you on this. All a bit strange if you ask me.
OP, just fit some GOOD tyres. There's really no need to start a thread asking for alternatives.
-
I've just purchased 4 Avon Zv7's for mine in 225/45/17 XL for £62 a corner. They will be getting fitted tomorrow.
The car came with Maxxis Z3 victra on the front and infinity 050 on the back, now the Infinitys are a god awful tyre!! The Maxxis are pretty naff too...
Hoping these Avons will be worth the investment, i'll feedback what they're like for anyone interested
-
I agree with what has been said on here in regards to spending a few extra quid on tyres to get a better tyre, one that you want and more importantly a tyre that will probably save your life or someone else's. At the end of the day, the tyre contact patch is about the size of a postcard why take it away with cheaper tyres.
I run Pirelli PZero 225/45/17 and I really like the feel and feedback I get from them. I get a bout 8-9k out of a set, thats fine as they grip like superglue in the wet and dry.
I will only stick with the top 6 tyre manufactures. My dad likes Toyo's on his N/A impreza and likes them, but I keep saying get some better tyres as he does about 15-20k a year in his retried life style.
-
Thanks everyone. all comments appreciated. Apparently because of internet deals, tyres at fitting centres have come down in price a lot to compete.
Hence i have now spotted some goodyear eagles at ETB for under £80 each fitted. No brainer
-
Kwik fit have 25% off continental tyres at the moment..wonder if they would be offended if I said I just want the tyres and will get someone else to install them :signLOL:c :popcornsoda:

Would rather walk than go to Kwik Fit for anything absolute scum.
The 25% off is a con, They simply put the retail/till prices up by 25% the previous Month but continue to sell the Tyres at the same price as they always have. This legally allows them to advertise a 25% off sales campaign the following Month as in theory the retial/till price is reduced from the previously inflated price but in reality there is no saving. There never was!

I had those on an old 9N3 Polo GTI and, well, they ruined the car! Couldn't believe how differently the car felt to drive after replacing the factory Continentals with these!
That said, the MK5 GTI is a different car, so may not have such adverse affects on your car!
-
I paid around 83 quid per corner for some Goodyear Eagle Assymetric 3 from F1 auto centre. Might want to check them out too. they do all major brands at good price fitted
-
Another vote here for Michelins
If you're not using the car much they will last a long time and it always gives confidence knowing you have a good tyre underneath you, afterall, that's what's keeping the car on the tarmac.
Another point that I dont think has been mentioned is that having a good quality tyre fitted is a good selling point should you ever want to sell the car, I find if the owner wanted to save on one of the fundamental items on a car, then what else have they been tight with?
-
Hi, We have 225 40 17 Avon zv7s on our mk6 gtdiesel (stage1)and 225 40 18 Avon zz5 on golf gti mk5 (stage3).£60-£65each inc .delivery.Over the years we had michelin, pirelli,a few premium brand and some chinese tyres.Out of all the them michelin are best but are expensive next to the avon tyres mentioned above which are very very nearly as good as michelin.......................PS Fulda sport control are good in wet ,ok in dry.Linglong UHP cheapest but not the worst and compare well with GT Radial!
-
Well I've had the Avons fitted and so far they seem good. Haven't pushed them much as they need to bed in a bit but they hold the damp cold roads pretty well.
Also my PCV has failed so the car is running like a bag of bolts so no heavy right footing till I change that.
Will update again once they're bedded in and have been tested more thoroughly :driver:

I'm new here so don't know the background but genuine question what is not to like about Rainsport 3s?
I've had a set on my Clio 182 and they performed really well on the road. They are also fitted to my ED30 and whilst I'm getting some slip in this ice they are still pretty good to me but I have no frame of reference for this car.
I remember paying £60 per corner on my 182.

Because the sidewalls are too soft for the more 'enthusiastic' drivers among us :) Big squealings in the summer months! Seriously chap, try some Pilot Sport 4s and you'll never use a Rainsport again

Penny pinching and bodging really hacks me off, to the point of probably not buying a used car ever again! The amount of inexcusable hacks and bodges I've found in every s/hand VW I've owned is unreal!

In my last golf which was a tdi I had the rainsport tyres which were really good in the wet, im now on goodyear assymetric 3 on my stage 1 gti and i get lots of wheelspin. How do the Michelin PS4 compare to goodyears in terms of grip?

I went from Eagle F1 to Pilot Sport 4s last year and found big improvements in ALL of the key areas. I really don't like F1s. I find the steering feel to be vague, tramlining gets bad once half worn and the sidewalls are too soft. The PS4 easily beats it in the wet, and smashes it completely in the dry.
Thank me later

Ditto all of this really.
I didn't notice much of a tramlining issue, but I did notice that the grip levels disappeared once the Eagle F1 were about half worn - Couldn't wait to get rid of my last pair. Also found they don't fair as well in the very cold compared to the PS4.
Dry grip of the PS4 is far superior to the Eagle F1s though.
-
Yeah I'm seriously impressed with how well the PS4 performs in sub zero conditions. I don't think I'll be bothering with winter tyres anymore!

AD08Rs are "fairly slippery" at the moment. :signLOL:

Were those the Rainsport 3 'XL' as they have a stiffer tyre wall. My Clio was a bit lighter than the Golf but I never really had a problem that you describe but I had heard that feedback on the non extra load tyres.
My tyres came with the car but I'm open to change when the time comes
