Title: The Pre-Build Thread - Brownies Sootchucker Rocco
Post by: DaveB@Vagbremtechnic on January 28, 2010, 02:24:19 pm
Right.....

Car is due next month.....

I've decided on the following mods from the getgo. They're going onto my new 140PD Manual Scirroco in Candy White, its a bit of a plain jane at the moment but not for long. I have lots of freinds in Finance and Leasing and lets just say it came with a rather large 2 figure discount and I didn't get stiffed for the whopping 2.9% price increase in January.

So heres the list with who I have helping me with certain items - Feel Free to suggest any mods that I've missed, looking to keep it fairly subtle - dont need big power, believe it or not its going to be the first Dub I've put big brakes on  :ashamed:

Im in the North West - not feeling the love with the likes of Awesome so defo need some recomendations

RNS510 - Darren
Privacy Glass - Local Tintmasters
Helios Alloys - Already got em Jay working his magic on them
Cruise Control - Stalk aquired already new  - needs fitting and coding
Black Vinyl roof - Raccoon manchester - Cheers Matt
Brakes  - Some country and western
Short Shifter - Forge Front to rear and Side to Side
H&R Lowering Springs
Carbon Mirror Caps - Local CF guru from British Aerospace

I not after a bodykit per se, maybe some sideskirts and a valance front and rear, if you've seen something in the flesh that works then lets be hearing about it and even better lets be seeing the pics.....

Theres some budget left so LETS BE HEARING WHICH MODS I'VE MISSED!

Thats what I thought - 28k miles as well

Nath - Im hoping so - problem being roccos have arches like the bloody Mersey tunnel entrance it needs a good drop so they dont look odd. Having said that invariably theres a 80-100kg of brake crap in the back which narrows the gap from tyre to arch somewhat  :ashamed:

Double revved up over this now  :pomppomp: :pomppomp: :pomppomp:

Woooo!  the posh pilot does Vinyl roof.  :chicken:

I think the front bumper needs something on Roccooz, it needs the gaping mouth split up with something vertical like a pair of Fangs. Nathan's idea of the R bumper would work well.  :happy2:

I also would get the work done at your brake fitters garage rather than Awesome.  :happy2:

Gave my good parts guy the Scirroco R bumper part number and he just froze with smoke coming out of his ears muttering "does not compute........does not compute.......does not compute" so thought I might leave it a couple of weeks...

Thats an option, although not directly.

Just bought a job lot of used calipers and in that job lot is a load of CP7040's which are the ones in the scirroco kit from AP, the only problem is that even though the discs are two piece they weigh about 10kgs a corner.

In terms of outright performance the 4 pot 330mm setup ticks the most performance boxes but I wouldn't have a clue on track so wasted on me really

Then theres the R8 rear  kits......R8 fronts have gone to a CW scirroco owner funnily enough!

I also have some Ford GT calipers that were going to go onto a 345mm R32 disc, had the carriers made but stumbled across some 355x32 Alcon rotors which are simply top quality and would work really well with the Ferrari F40 pad.

Also had a B5 RS4 setup but sold it begrudgingly to somebody on here so they could join the TC brake club......

And finally simply a 345mm Scirroco R / Golf R setup which is basically a S3 setup with different pad springs (which I've bought)

Nathan over on ASN has the R8 Rears on the front and S3 rears on his A3 and the pedal is simply perfect and they fit under the 19's without spacers.

So I'll probably copy Nathans setup  - it drives real nice.

Thats my problem Im 40 this year but in my head im 22, if the wife would let me I'd have a Muircielago Poster on the bedroom wall!!!!

VC - you met my wife? She puts up with so much brake crap all over the house and anybody who's been over to mine would agree she puts up with a lot ! Shes a canny one though she waited for the place to have a caliper on every flat surface and then announced that she needed a "hobby" as well........so Im now paying for a hay eating machine that craps a lot.... :ashamed:

TC - Nice pic, you've sat up the front there'd be nowhere to put it!!  I could walk through security though and they'd miss the gun and strip search me for my nail clippers

Title: Re: The Build Thread - Brownies Sootchucker Rocco Est Arrivé
Post by: DaveB@Vagbremtechnic on March 21, 2010, 08:16:25 am
Well after being told by the dealer that it was going not to be March 1st and more like April 1st (He rgretted giving me that date lol) got a call last Monday to say that the car was registered and on the way up to the finance company that had bought it on my behalf......So I was pretty revved up to say the least.

The car was 2010MY and there had been some changes so I hadn't really seen exactly what the car was going to be like until I saw it in the flesh, before I joined the Brethren of the unemployable i used to work in commercial finance so all my mates who were middle management senior sales guys then have all had flourishing careers since overthe last 10 years and had arranged for the car to be stored indoors and another layer of polish added prior to me seeing it.

To say I was pleased was an understatement - it was nose out - looked great very agressive from the front and looked great even on the standard 18's.

Jay (JPC) had machined polished my Helios Alloys as they had been on my Mk5 for 18 months or so they were sat there  ready to fit and instantly transformed the car to something a little "different" I was kind of hoping that it would go some way to sorting out the hilarious arch gap on the rocco but it didn't - highlighted if anything.

So it was back home briefly for a spot of lunch, Mrs nicked the keys and did my head in on purpose by saying it was a "birds" car and after being invited to take it round the block left a 3ft tyre mark outside the house by lighting up the front tyres - serves me right for taking her mini cooper past 2500RPM last week......... :stupid:

Then it was off to DVLA to change the owner name and get my bargain basement plate assigned and then off brake shopping as usual.

Theres been mucho discussion and disappointment over on sciroccocentral about the inability to retro the LED driving lights from the Roc R onto the lower models, so up to the plates steps a guy called Iulian from Romania. Hes had a great amount of success in splitting the front sidelight/indicator cluster and installing LED's into them, sealing them up and internally fitting all the resistors etc to make them work, heres what they look like

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg13.imageshack.us%2Fimg13%2F5095%2Ffilej.jpg&hash=4ae52bd7ca51c12c7fb6f8853b3823d1878b9c99)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg13.imageshack.us%2Fimg13%2F5091%2Ffileek.jpg&hash=bc9e2acd261a17aaaa8b93a6eba686dde38e2d8d)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg13.imageshack.us%2Fimg13%2F645%2Ffiledu.jpg&hash=582c2385e5705c5cb3dbb7b83f2cfd9560e684a7)

And on the car........

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.shrani.si%2Ff%2F2O%2F11k%2F2fNOqBfo%2Froccoled.jpg&hash=7140a89c6633129a6e58a636c71a4d87220229e9)

Fitting them took me about 20 minutes - worked perfectly with no alarms on the car, I think we've all got a favourite mod on our cars and invariably its not the most expensive one either - this is defo mine.

Initial impressions are great - its a 140PD so its never going to be faster than my Mk5 until I get it remapped but its very torquey and had me instintually reaching for the DSG paddles behind the wheel even though its a manual  :ashamed:

Handling is superb - the rocco is 8" lower than a Mk5/6 and outof the box I think the rocco has the Mk5 pipped, it also seems to run 19's a little easier than the Mk5 - its less crashy if you know what I mean.

The interior is great especially now that Darren (Mortygttdi) has fitted the RNS510 and Premium bluetooth, Darrens a true Gent and made a cracking job of fitting it all, not a broken clip or mark on the interior at all, Ive thanked him in the General section already but I'll say it here as well - CHEERS DAZ!

I did a 160mile round trip to see him in Leeds yesterday - I would do double that now after yesterday

The RNS/Phone/MDI has made a massive improvement to how much fun the car is - really pleased with it.

Been playing around with the ACC (adaptive chassis control) its got three settings normal comfort and sport - this really works and you can feel it doing its thing as soon as you push the button. To go from Sport to Comfort on a rough road is VERY noticeable clever these Germans!

The seats are also much more supportive than the Mk5 think somewhere between the Gti Standard seat and the Recaro again really pleased

So heres the list of mods

So far:

Helios's fitted at dealer
OEM DRL/Indicators swapped out for the LED DRL/Indicators in OEM housings (Coolest Rocco Mod on the planet)
Premium Bluetooth
RNS510
Gauge Check Sweep Courtesy Darren
Cornering Lights Courtesy Darren

To Do:

Touarag Rear View Camera Courtesy Darren    Need to work it out with hybrid parts
Already Bought the Rocco R rear darker lights - fitting Monday at work
H&R -35mm springs next saturday with JJ @ R-TEK Motorsport
Short Shifters x 2
Brakes but cant be arsed
Remap once it hits 1k miles (not long now!!!)
Swap the incorrect Cruise Control Stalk I bought and get a new stalk & slip ring
STILL waiting for the R Line front bumper and R Line Door Sills
Black Vinyl roof (undecided now its here though)

Now before somebody posts a

 :worthless:

Smiley....

Im on it, Ive invited Jay (JPC) over to where I work and I was hoping that I could ask him to bring his camera along and get some good shots of the car when clean next to the aeroplane and on the ramp - so heres hoping. But other than that heres one of a dirty rocco on Daz's drive.....

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss4%2Fmortygttdi%2FS1050867-1.jpg&hash=0999898e3ae7130d6b090e5788c5631a003414ea)

What brakes are you thinking of?  You could get discs the size of Bin lids behind those Posh Montreal's you have fitted!  :booty:

Dunno yet - everybody I speak to expects me to have 12 Pot Carbon Ceramics fitted but as I'm always saying horses for courses and I press the pedal maybe twice on the way to work and I dont do track days  :sad1:

Having said that theres a ring trip over on the uk-mkivs site being organised and Tony_D sowed a wicked seed about taking the rocco back from whence it came. Got two sets of these handy so might let one go and fit one if I end up going

Cant wait to see some proper pics mate,  In the mean time get some pics with the RNS and the dash clocks and stuff I like the white dials with the phone dials in the middle.

Dave Ive also got in touch with a few people regards the cruise control so we will get it sorted for you once you get the parts,  Dana at RT is looking into it for you and my mate at VW is having a word with the master tech.

As i said the other night Dave, looks the biz mukka!  :happy2:

Looked especially nice as you threw it round that kink into the services, so much so me and mrs beddie ended up having a very good look at one on friday whilst the ED was in the dealers ...  :surprised:

Do it Beddie!

Ive had a golf on and off (mainly on) for over 10 years and not having one is slightly strange, but its that good you forgive yourself.

I was chatting about this with mortygttdi and mattposs on Saturday, you would need a reason not to do a golf over a rocco and invariably thats going to be 5 doors.

I know thats a bit of a leap on a golf forum but without sounding like a c0ck cos ive just bought one but dont knock it till you tried it. Besides Id have given another £2k for the same spec golf......Highline,  privacy glass, rain sensor, auto headlights, RCD510, 8" wide wheels instead of those bloody 7J rims disguised as 7.5J. No lumbar support though funnily enough but arguably better resale values which are important to me but not to others.

Its on a 2 year deal so might look at getting back into a golf then

Looking good Dave.  :pomppomp:

Stop fannying about and get some decent brakes on it.  :stupid: You not having decent brakes on is the  equivalent of a estate agent living next to the north circular in a first floor bed sit.  :signLOL:

More or less the reason why i chose a Roco over a mk6 GTi :happy2:

Car looks ace fella cant wait to see the new pics :popcornsoda:

Could you PM me the details of the guy you had the LED side lights from as i would be interested in a set for myself.
How do you find the indicators work i imagine these are LED's too what is the colour match like?

Very interested in how you fit the reverse parking sensor also as if posible that is one mod im going to do to mine

Love the new Roc Dave.
I've got two teenage kids and need every inch of space in the back but it was a close thing between getting a Golf and Rocco.
Plumped for the 5 door GTI in the end but only 'cos I got a cracking deal on a demo car. Still half wish I'd got a Rocco.

Golfs a great Car mate. I was sort of right time right place with this thing otherwise I'd be in a 5dr Mk6 myself.

It was the automotive equivalent of a puppy picking you as opposed to the other way round....speaking to a finance company owning mate of mine.....

Me: "My cars knacked - whats it worth in Glass's Guide"

Mate: "Roughly what you paid for it 18 months ago"

Me: "Really ......... ok good news - you got any Mk6 Golfs coming?"

Mate: "No all gone  - Ordered some Sciroccos last October due soon"

Me: "What Colours?"

Mate: "Just the one left bud - problem is its white....."

Me: "Reeeaaaally"    :pomppomp: :pomppomp: :pomppomp:

Thats my problem Im 40 this year but in my head im 22, if the wife would let me I'd have a Muircielago Poster on the bedroom wall!!!!

bedroom? man up dude.... ive got batman in the lounge across 3 canvasses

admittedly very 'arty' and heavily reworked by yours truely.... but batman none the less  :star:

....Thank goodness it's Batman and not Robin!

....

I'm loving the particular mods you're doing, Dave  :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:

But, to be honest, the new Rocco's looks don't excite me. You're transforming it - Rather like SteveP is doing such a great job on his Mk6 GTI. But I can't get past the Rocco's rear three-quarter view.

Great to see that I'm not the only one who appreciates the sense and advantages of LED DRL's!
