Title: What Rear Brake Discs?
Post by: H18Golf on March 09, 2017, 11:56:48 am
Was just on the Euro Carparts website looking to buy rear discs and pads (leaning towards Pagid or Brembo).

Anyway there are two different discs available for the rear.  One has a diameter of 255mm, the other 256mm.  The only other difference I can see stated in the details of the discs is height?  I wasn't sure what this was so started a live chat session with someone on there site who said that they didn't know where this was measured from and also couldn't tell me what disc to buy.

So I thought I would ask on here in the hope someone may be able to help.  Due to a kind of rust lip on the top of current discs, measuring the diameter of these wouldn't clear up what I need due to there only being 1mm between the 2 discs available.  The car is a 2006 completely standard GTi.

Any help is much appreciated.   :happy2:

For a 2006 GTI you can either use 286mm or 282mm discs. 255 or 256 will not fit.

Thanks @rich83 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=709) , the 255 and 256mm rear discs came up when I put my registration number into their website.

To be fair I will just measure the current discs when I get home to see what I currently have on if 286 or 282mm discs will do.  Was just trying to get these ordered while im in work.

Thanks again for the help.

I ordered what my reg plate bought up but they were way too small. Best indication is whether your car is running 17" or 18" wheels standard

Discs on the GTI are the same regardless of wheel size

Not on the mk5 gti. Its either 282mm or 286, but you can use either.

Previously bought Pagid brake discs from eurocar parts using my registration to find the 'right' ones, however once I tried putting them on the car I couldn't get then to line up right so took it to the garage to get it done. Once there I got told the discs were to small and in the mechanics opinion was for a less powered car e.g polo or even a 1.4L Golf.

Long story short had to spend more money on bigger discs and couldnt return smaller ones to eurocar parts

I've got some drilled Mtec 286mm discs that I bought off here last month but didn't use in the end.
Only want around £10, I just need to check postage costs.

Eurocarparts gti discs are 282mm from the description as I fitted a pair last week

Yep you need to be careful on eurocarparts as even after you type your reg in it still gives you parts that are incorrect for your car! You need to click on the fitment detail tab to make sure. I have just bought some 282mm discs along with pads for mine to replace later this week when I replace a sticky caliper.

I actually ended up buying on ebay though as it was cheaper even when using the current 30% off on eurocarparts  :happy2:

Yeah, as per dools225, my experience of ECP is that putting your reg plate in still brings up parts that won't fit. Have had to return a few things so I never rely on them anymore. Always have to check elsewhere like this very knowledgeable forum :happy2:
