Title: Show me your lowered mk5!
Post by: leemk5 on March 28, 2017, 07:30:26 pm
Basically I want to buy lowering springs for the GTi but not really sure how low to go, I don't want it to be 'slammed', just sitting nice, I was thinking 40mm front and rear but can people post up pics of their lowered golfs and include how low it is??

Thanks

Have a quick search - there are a few threads just like this where people have posted up pics and what springs they're on.

But in the meantime, here's mine on H&R springs, around a 30mm drop:

When your lowering is it best to get new shocks to ?
In an ideal world, yes. Specifically some shorter/uprated dampers that'd work better with shorter springs. So something like Bilstein B8 or VWR.

You can just stick the springs on with standard dampers, but the dampers would then wear faster than they would being run at a normal height. You'll find if your dampers are getting on a bit (say 60k) the ride will soon become a little bit rough and crashy.

I've been on standard dampers with my H&Rs for 18 months or so, and while the ride isn't terrible I can definitely feel it getting a bit choppy. I considered replacing my shocks with new VWR dampers (which by all accounts is a good combo in terms of ride and performance) but I'm going for coilovers instead so I can go a bit lower.

Thanks for the info my cars going to hit 70k soon ish so it sounds like it would be best if I go for the full set up just to be on the safe side. Hopefully I'll feel some improvement in the smoothness of the ride once everythings on and it's settled

Are adjustable drop links needed for lowering more than 30mm?

Some coilover kits come with shorter/adjustable drop links. FK I think. But plenty of mk5s are dropped on coilovers using standard drop links. And there's definitely no need for different drop links if you just use lowering springs. I'm on H&R springs, and standard drop links. No issues.

I'm inclined to think it only becomes an issue when you try and go silly-low... like those FKs do!

Yes. H&R lower by approx 30mm, and VWR by 15-20mm.

I'm on H&R sport springs and standard shocks. I also have 12mm wheel spacers all round.
