I had a right game on the way home from work, heard a wired knocking, grinding noise and the abs/tc lights came on. Pulled over and jacked up the passanger side and the whole wheel, brake caliper and pad and hub where wobbling! :surprised:
Turns out the bolt that goes through the hub had worked its way loose. I tightened it back up but there is still movement in the wheel.
I think the hub has gone? Does anyone know the cost of a new one?
Cheers
Ollie :happy2:

sounds like the wheel bearing has collapsed

:surprised:
Good thing you stopped to investigate!

What would be required to fix this? Is it a case of removing the hub bit where the wheel bolts go in and replace it?
Cheers :happy2:

I know! Im hoping nothing else is damaged! :scared:

I had to have both of my front wheel bearings replaced - split 6 months apart.
Fortunately the repair work was covered under warranty. If I remember correctly the VW service man rambling on about them costing £40 each.
P.S. It's easier and safer to get the entire hub with the bearing...saves on a lot of time faffing around.

My car is still under warranty but it wont be covered as it has been changed! :sad1:
I can still hear a funny noise coming from that side. Everything is tight. I think it is the wobble it still has. Is there any other damage I should be looking out for?
Im going into VW tomorrow to see the damage to the car and my pocket!
Do you think I need to pay VW to fit it or just buy one and fit it?
Im starting to wish I would have sold it now!
:happy2:

if it is the wheel bearing that is causing the trouble-but the wheel bearing at the parts department and get your local specialist to fit it for half the labour costs

If it's the main bolt through the middle then that bolts into the drive shaft and not the hub, it only passes through the hub.
There is a specific torque setting for these bolts which can often be ignored when for instance fitting new suspension. They are also once only, again often ignored.
I had both front hubs replaced on one of my Octavia's under warranty. (Turned out to be the tyres in the end but that's another story)
I'm fairly certain the hubs aren't too expensive at between £40-£50 which considering the size of the lump of metal isn't bad.
-
Not much use here unfortunately... But please change your sig Ollie... I flinch everytime I see it! :scared:

Been to VW today
£100 for the ball bearing bit and £200 for the housing if I need it. Also the brake may have warped so could be more. Plus labour! To say I am annoyed is an understatement! :fighting2:

Interesting,
Yes thats the bolt. It was tightened finger tight by accident. It was the same bolt reused.

I'm away at work at the moment so I don't have too much stuff with me but I'm pretty sure the front hub comes complete as a sealed unit with a bearing pressed in. It's about a 30 min job to change.

The hub comes with the bearing sealed in it, yes... try contacting SKF in Luton. They actually manufacturer the things in Luton...

Cheers chaps. :happy2:
I think he said it was the hub with the bearings inside and then there is a housing that that goes into.
Do VW sell the bolt so I can get them changed when fitted again? Also the torque to which they are done up to?
Thanks :happy2:

Ollie,
Think the part number is WHT 002 795 (dodecagonal head bolt M16 x 1.5 x 70)
According to Elsawin
12-point bolt, 70 Nm + 90° further (Always renew after removing )
When bolt is loosened or tightened, vehicle must not be standing on its wheels

Cheers Norbreck! :happy2:
