Hi,
I currently drive a 2009 MK6 Golf 1.4 TSI but I've been debating on selling and buying a 2007/2008 Golf GTI.
I do drive around 250 Miles a week but most of those miles are on country roads/A-Roads and i don't find my self in traffic much,
I just need to work out how much worse off i'm going to be and is it really worth it?
What sort of MPG will i be seeing?
If i did get the MK5 can the RCD510 be retrofitted quite easily? What about DAB?
:driver:

MPG should be, if all is in fine order, between 27 and 30.5 mpg. I averaged 28.5 mostly when not in stop and go traffic and mostly country road driving, constant speeds, and not aggressively or often.

If you buy a GTI, it's for a bit of fun. Corner to corner A/B roads are fun. If you drive those roads with economy in mind, a GTI is the wrong car.
35-40mpg is easy, but you might as well get a derv if you're concerned about that. Because a derv Golf will do everything a GTI will at 35-40mpg.
RCD510 DAB is an easy retrofit. And cheap - 150 quid or so. You might want to read into the battery drain issue on earlier mk5s. Do a search.

Id be happy to average 27-30MPG only reason i asked is because i have also been told its more 18-22MPG by friends.
My 250 Miles should cost me around £50 of premium fuel going by those MPG figures which i would be more than happy to pay, i currently put in £35 a week.
I did do a search and seen i could have battery drain issues but can be sorted. What about the DAB, i'm guessing i would have to sort the Arial out?
What should i look out for? I have heard about the rust and making sure the cam belt has been replaced, and the seats can tear a little.
My budget is around £6k would like to get a 2007-2008 model.

These are good points, but I'd counter with the GTI is a great combination of decent fuel efficiency when tootling and great fun to punt when the mood takes you. Without sacrificing too much in comfort. My long term average is around 33-34mpg (imperial). That is 50% highway/50% city. I'm generally just tootling with the traffic with a couple of overtaking bursts on average each trip. Personally I find the GTI much more satisfying to drive than any Golf diesel I've driven (which is many). But that's just me.

If you average 34MPG long term you need to use the loud pedal more often..... :signLOL:
Think my tank average is usually around 18-20MPG..... Fun miles

Im averaging around 30mpg driving 10miles too and from work. But sometimes theyre fun miles!

Economy is average I would say, I get around 33 mpg daily and maybe max 41 on a long run

I have a K04 plus and average 28'ish. Even if I drive sporty often...I do 26.5 average. If they get less than 24 mpg...then they need to look at the fuel trims in their data and I would bet they have a high-positive-number in the long term/partial-under load correction showing a lean condition making a 'more fuel added' to correct it. There is also driver behavior to consider. :drinking:
-
Mine is driver behaviour , and my fuel trims are usually within 1%... What a difference that makes going from an intake with +10 to +15% to having one which is near perfect... but that's another story
Mines not a daily commuter, 'spirited' miles only :signLOL:

Lol I don't know how some of you only get 18 mpg out of your GTi's ... you must be permanently booting it everywhere.
I'm in constant stop / start traffic 5x a week for week on the M5 and M6, still put my foot down a lot in between traffic jams and round A / B roads when I have clear road, and still manage to average 24mpg roughly every week.
Lowest I got it down to was 20mpg and I was practically racing everywhere for a week.
-
I don't understand the idea that because you have a gti you have to be thrashing every time you get behind the wheel.
@VWGTI5 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=20325) I do similar miles to you and put in between £50-60 per week.

My thoughts exactly.

I agree...I drive to the track and make runs and drive home and average over 21 mpg. I can drive to a Poker Run event and do a spirited 70 mile drive and averaged over 22 mpg. Something is off if you cannot get a mk5 GTI to average over 25 mpg as a daily.
-
Is worth mentioning that a USA gallon is rather smaller than a UK one (@3.8l v @4.5l), so Ron's 22mpg would be equivalent to @26mpg over here.

It's Impossible unless people have a shagged injector stuck open, or a dead O2 sensor etc.
The problem with these quoted mpgs is they are short term averages, not the more meaningful long term averages. And not usually much context provided.
My Stage 1 ED30 has averaged 28mpg over the past 2 years (30K miles).
It's used every day for a 30 mile round trip commute, and for weekend social trips. Weekly fuel intake varies from £55-£70 depending on how many races I get into on the dual carriageway section of my commute, and how much it's used over the weekends.
My average dual carriageway cruise speed is 90mph, I regularly boost it hard on the country lane section of my commute, and never stick to any speed limits unless it's unavoidable. It sits in heavy traffic for 15-20 mins after leaving work.
I flit between V Power and Tesco 99 and don't see an mpg difference at all. No difference in performance either. These days I'm finding myself using Tesco more as it's over 20p a litre cheaper than V Power where I live. I'm not a thrifty person, but that price difference does add up when used regularly. V Power is a waste if just sat in traffic most of the week.
You guys have no idea of bad mpg until you've owned an old 525i auto estate  That thing used to scoff £100 in fuel every week, and was gutless too. So 28mpg overall for a 300hp hot hatch is pretty remarkable imo.
