Title: Some one tell me im nuts!!!!
Post by: B3n on February 04, 2010, 04:15:30 pm
Hey folks
Can someone please talk some sense into me or give me a second opinion.

Basically i want to change my 58 plate gt-sport with 11k miles for a 56 plate GTI with 47k miles!!

Here is the full story im currently driving a Golf GT-sport 2.0tdi on 58plate which ive owned since new dec 2008.
I do really love the car and i have put Gti skirts, Gti rear bumper, steering wheel, grills, steering wheel etc and ive had it remapped
Now today ive been offered a GTi on a 56 plate with 47k miles one owner fvwsh for a very good price and im very tempted to buy it as its going to cost me £150 a month less, Its the same colour as mine so ill swap all the bits over as ive had mine colour coded and if i trade mine in ill have £1500 after settling finance to spend on mods for the GTi.

But i cant help on thinking im nuts in thinking ill be better off with the GTi even though its older and is going to cost alot more to run, insure etc

So would you

A) Keep current car and have peace of mind that ive owned it from new and am aware of its history and enjoy the economy of a diesel.

B) By the GTi save myself £150 a month but settle for having a older car with more miles.

Help please

Ok, you're nuts and need help. But it's no use asking a load of other nuts to help you!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi456.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq281%2Fpreeto_f07%2Ftop-10-most-overused-words_8.jpg&hash=1dfa0e985812e11c6704ca9150b5a094b170785d)

But my serious advice would be to follow your heart and go for the GTI. Ultimately though, it's entirely your call and we can only tell you what we would do as individuals.

ive only just got my gti and i love it to bits, but seriously, id stick with your car now

you say it will save you £150 a month but that saving will be taken up in fuel and insurance premiums....

once you go mk V GTI there's no going back, and to ask in here will only bring you in a heap of trouble.  :fighting2:
I constantly find new things to do to mine, and it's app. 8.000£ ago i decided not to do anymore mods on the car
But love every second and mod i do  :stupid:

So to summon up, get the GTI  :star:

I would keep the GT Sport, de-DPF it (assuming its a 170) and have it mapped in order to be able to laugh at a remapped GTi as you overtake it using half the amount of fuel  :happy2:

I agree with Robin, we will just confuse you and tempt you in to spending your hard earned cuz thats what were good at!

I think you are the only person that can answer your question. If you do your sums and they add up, and you have an itch to scratch as far as the GTI go's then go for it!  :happy2:

If not then stay put in what sounds like a very nice car you already have!  :happy2:

Cheers for the input folks.

Im only doing 4-500 miles a month max so i dont think the economy side of things will make much of a difference well it shouldnt make £150pm difference. The only reason i got my diesel in the first place is because i got it alot cheaper than the used GTi i was initialy looking at.

182_Blue the car is coming from a VW dealer and it will have a warranty so im not to worried about that plus my plan is and always has been to keep my car Gt-sport until/If a ED35 comes out so the extra money i could be saving will be going in the kitty for one of them.

Djhorace ive currently got a 140 bhp and ive already had it remapped by Revo so realisticaly ive gone as far as it can go tuning wise and altough its quick it just doesnt really do it for me.

Heres a pic of my current car

Drive the GTI mate, then make your mind up. I think we know what your decision will be

+1. Drive the GTi first.

If you feel the difference is justified, go for it.

....Don't drive the GTI!! You'll want it!

But AndrewP is right - The only way to know is a test drive.

Btw, there's always going to be a faster/better model on the horizon whatever you do.

Ben,

Have a really really good look at the Gti, and then weigh up the condition of yours.  You know the history of yours, who has driven it, how hard it has been pushed and the little flaws (if any).  Do you know that sort of history of the Gti?

If not, i would stick with what you have, a short term again can often mean a long term pain.  there is no such thing as a free dinner.

Just my opinion.  your car is worth more to you than the Gti.

It sounds to me Ben that your heart says go for the GTI but Captain Sensible is shouting at you but not loudly enough, so you're asking us to tell you you're nuts and to dissuade you.

Slightly different but with some similarity: After test driving a grey Mk5 2.0 TDI and a red Mk5 GTI I listened to Captain Sensible and ordered the TDI. It's a great car, quite fast, and made sound financial sense etc. However, I woke up screaming in the night and phoned the next morning to change my order.

Test drive and..

I got rid of my diesel Passat in favour of my 07 GTi because im only doing about 500 miles a month now myself, and i therefore wasnt doing enough to warrant having the diesel.

The Golf came up at great money, its been owned since new by a family friend and covered only 19k.

Id been looking at 330's etc anyway but after i drove the GTi i knew my decision was made!

Swap for the GTI.

I used to have a 2.0tdi A3 and the GTI is only the smallest amount less economical but if you factor in the small difference in price between diesel and petrol, there's no real saving in having a diesel.
I drive about 800 miles per WEEK and I'm still in a petrol car. If you're doing the miles, you might as well do them in something fun!

Cheers fella your more or less spot on with that :congrats:

Well after having a conversation with the dealer i got my car from funnily enough they rang me to offer me a mk6 gti how strange is that ive decided to keep my current car until the ED35 is out as the salesman i spoke too knew of the car i was looking at and told me what the previous owner was like plus a few other thoughts have helped me.

A) I know the history of my car and its piece of mind that know how its been driven.
B) Yes its more expensive than the Gti but then again its worth more and im more than comfortable paying what i am now.
C) I dont know how to explain C really just i went out back and looked at my car and i knew if i changed it i would be gutted.

So I am now looking on the net to see what else i can do to my Derv to help keep me satified until i get my hands on ED35.

Thanks to all for the input.

Ben

Its not usually like me to make a rash decision and get something "wild" like a GTi, but driving from Stranraer to Glasgow on my first long trip i averaged 44mpg, and ive done 230miles so far in this second tank with another 190 left. Im over the moon with those figures as before i bought it i thought id be happy with 300-350 to a tank.

mr stoke is spot on  :happy2:
your 'known' quantity is always a huge benefit.
weigh up insurance , tyres need replacing on either?
make sure the GTI is absolutely spot on , speak to the previous owner.

if it all looks Ok then I would say a GTI is going to give you far more pleasure.
HOWEVER it also means you may spend more on more mods  :signLOL:

a change is always more fun

Let your heart decide. Lifes too short. You clearly desire a gti.  I had a similar choice before buying mine. Diesel (new) or gti nearly new. Always wanted a gti, knew I'd always look at them longingly if I went for the soot chucker. Turns out I got the gti and STILL look longingly at them! Never regretted it, so much I just can't think what on earth I'd replace her with.

Nah im keeping my Derv for now as i said above the gti i was offered apparently needed some TLC which isnt a problem but its un needed costs plus ill no ill end up spending silly money on mods. So unless a mint GTi comes and finds me im in the Derv until i get my hands on a Mk6 Edition 35 and ive already got my name down in the dealer all i got to do now is wait a few years for VW to build me one.

Is it known for certain that VW will produce an Edition 35?

If so, it could be a Mk7.

Not known for certain yet but ill be very surprised if they dont as they have done one for the past few mk's so a mk6 ED35 is inevitable. We probably wont be seeing the MK7 for a few years yet im guessing around 2015

I think you're probably right about an Ed35 being offered but I doubt that VW won't release a Mk7 until as far away as 2015. Even by late 2011 and certainly in 2012, the Mk6 Golf will probably be falling well behind its competitors regarding technology and also the eco bureaucrats will be continuing to insist on their often tedious features.

None of us know but my gut feeling is a launch at the Paris show in late 2012 for the next generation of GTI. 2013 if not, but not as distant as 2015 in my guesstimate.

Would there really be any point in a mk6 Ed35?

I could see the point int eh Ed30 as the standard GTI could do with more power and a bit better styling. Since the R32 was V6 powered and heavy, the ED30 slotted iin nicely between GTI and R32.

With the mk6 having a GTI AND R  both with a turbo engine, an ED35 would again have to slot in between them and I just can't see a big enough gap between GTI and R in the mk6 for anything to go in between.

I'm sure I'll be proved wrong though

Robin

Hmm interesting point :happy2:

But my opinion is that the Mk6 has already been introduced with the new VW group engines the tsi's and common rail engines etc so is for a while future proof if there is such a thing. But then again i can see where your coming from if anything we will see in 2012 a updated MK6 with tweaked engines and probably different style wheels and a new colour introduced then that will run until the MK7 is launched in 2015ish thats my guestimate :happy2:

They have always introduced a EDsomething.
The current Golf R is a replacement for the R32 as VW have stopped producing the 3.2 engine so instead of having a MK6 R32 they are having just a golf R and using a Tsi engine.
Im not saying they are definately going to be making a MK6 ED35 its just they have always done a anniversary model regardless of what else they have produced if they aint going to be introducing a ED35 then there will be something coming out at the end of the current model's lifespan manufacturers always have.
