Title: Headlight upgrade roundup for late 2017
Post by: spicypixel on October 14, 2017, 10:09:56 pm
So as topic says, what's available for a Mk5 that's worth upgrading to? the factory silver reflectors look pretty poor these days so wondering what's available still or worth getting.

Is Depo + HID the way to go still? I assume there's no road legal LED options for the mk5?

Thanks

Go depo with led bulbs as I did over a month ago and will never go back to hid bulbs ever again

I'm going to be using them for both  :happy2: waiting on the second set to arrive and then get some for the fog lights  too  :signLOL:

Thought on the fogs if it's too bright or too white you don't get vision you end up blinding yourself, hence why they're sort of dim and more yellow than headlights

Got links for proper depos and LED lights to match that work? Obviously assuming they don't canbus error then?

Wondering about the MOT legality though...

@r5gtt got any photos of them in various conditions? Beam pattern would be nice too.

That's fine, just worried LEDs in the depos will look very bright and light up the road as well as a candle as has been the issue in the past with LED retrofits.

That and it'd be really lovely to be MOT legal but the rules on that are very grey...

http://greyhead.co.uk/are-aftermarket-hid-lights-legal-in-the-uk#h.mgncps5vewv0

Handy I have the headlight washer part of the winter pack but not auto levelling lights... though I'd really like warmer white (4000-4300K) and all these LEDs seem to aim for 6000k which seems like a quicker way to getting frowned on. Some as high as 10-12k and basically blue have been spotted but I suspect you must really want to run a risk if you want to run around with blue headlights.
Title: Re: Headlight upgrade roundup for late 2017
Post by: r5gtt on October 16, 2017, 06:43:49 pm
Tbh I've not been flashed once by other road users who might think my headlights are too dazzling so cannot pass judgement on how bright they are although they are super bright. Anything over 6000k are blue but mine are super white and been complimented on them by two people so far.

This >>>

Therefore, as long as you have a manually-operated light levelling system - e.g. a little adjuster wheel on the dashboard - this also seems to be acceptable according to the wording above, unless of course somebody goes to the trouble of having your lights' output measured to test whether they put out more than 2,000 lumens.

Yeah seems the consensus and asked a garage that do MOTs and the gist is most don't even do a proper beam pattern check let alone light temperature or intensity check above 2000 lumens etc. Guess it's down to any bored old bill who want to be frustrating but I guess if the lights are between 4000k and 6000k it's going to come across as similar to daylight anyway.

Be nice to see some photos if you have LEDs fitted in projector Depos... how much did it cost all in?

I'm going to see if I can't find some dark GTI halogen headlights as plan B though...
I would go for a xenon R32 set but I suspect it's way out of my price range.

The plods don't give any trouble but fitted in oem halogen lenses might be an issue tbh as I get blinded by many who have hids in halogen headlamps

I think I paid £190 for the depo lights and £12 for the led bulbs

I remembered to take a picture whilst doing a three point turn last night

What's there to know about the anti flicker decoders? Interested now.
Edit: holy sh*t, 10,000 Lumens per bulb? Not convinced I need it to be 5x brighter than legal hah.
Edit2: Seems they even mention you need the decoders in the product page. Interesting.

I assume you don't need to code them as Shutterless Xenons in VCDS? Blowing the wiper motor would really take the shine out of this lighting endeavour  :signLOL:

Let's say I go depo GTI black reproductions, rather than R32 style projectors, would you spring for nightbreaker lasers in all 4 bulbs? just the dipped? just the full beams? Not sure if it's worth the cash for all 4 but I'd like to know what others are doing in that respect.

you'll need to code them as bi xenon without shutters so you don't blow the wiper motor  :happy2:

I'm happy with mine as they broken up the night without a doubt and wouldn't go for anything else

Have to admit I am leaning on the depo projector reproduction headlights but I'm still having the nagging feeling to just rock high end halogens like the OSRAM night breaker lasers with the dark backed GTI clone depos.

Of any one else with either the GTI depos or projector depos has an opinion it'd be welcome.

I'm running normal reflectors with Philips X-treme vision +120%  at the minute, they're very good. They're worlds behind  Bi-xenon though, why not see if headlightretrofits.org.uk can properly retrofit bi-xenon/bi-led to a set of depo copies for you so they'll work properly not like projectors (Projectors limit light output).

Mine come in 2 pieces. You fit the mount into the headlamp the push the bulbs into the mount. Even they are very secure in the mount they don't seem to have a set position that they lock into and can be twisted to change the bulb orientation

had them in over a month now and no interference with the radio.
Yes the depo need to be coded in as bi xenon without shutters for you not to blow your front wiper motor. Hope this helps  :happy2:

Found someone with vagcom local but they said if it has the correct module it’s as simple as ticking a box

Bit off topic but it's my thread so I'll do it anyway...
Anyone found some LED replacements for the rear indicators? Not found any yellow/orange LEDs that won't throw canbus errors. The rest of the rear lights are LED, both 4 brake lights and the reversing/fog lights - so mildly perturbed that the indicators are still halogen bulbs.

No such luck  :sad1:

Problem is limited choice due to unusual fitment, I have got a led in one and it does a crap job think mainly just to the limited space. So I have come to the conclusion the halogens cannot be matched or improved upon with led

I’ve got a led reverse light and as soon as I put it in reverse my radio signal goes, that’s what I’m worried about with my head lights

Bought the exact same setup, arrived today. Looks to all be decent kit although, disappointingly one of the rubber covers for the indicator bulb access seems to be missing. Will try an email to the sellers but my German is relatively poor! Also, I assume I use the projector adjustment worm screws to get the right light angles as I found no option for LHD/RHD and cant see an obvious switch inside the projector mechanism to switch between the two?
