Looking at getting another car ... as above , 30k max budget . What would you buy ?
Just not gelling with the Pirelli I have . I’ve come from a long line of rear wheel drive and basically missing it . Which is a shame as my Pirelli is epic with the mods done . What’s people’s thought :happy2:
-
With £30k, you have a huge range of choices. M3 / M5 / 997 / Coxster / Maserati / AM V8 / Lotus would just be scratching the surface.
-
Yes ... seems to be a lot about . I have my s2000 for a proper sports car experience and that will be staying ..... ironically another e92 comp pack is very appealing again .... suits my needs , but wondering if I’m missing any other such like car out ? M5 to big
Lotus similar to S2k
Aston... scared of bills !
Would love a Porsche but wife says no - apparently I’d look like a posh twat - have to agree
-
Spend sub 5k on converting the pierlli to AWD

Trust me I know how to waste money ... but that’s on another level :rolleye:
VW has done it for me already in the R

I don't get this - Why? Ferrari; Lambo; Mcalaren....then yes (perhaps), but not a 997. The 911 is a timeless piece of automotive sculpture - IMO. That's what I'd go for - buy it for yourself, if you're the main driver, sod what anyone else thinks :driver:

Women ( well mine anyway ) don’t seem to get that though .... it’s a Porsche in their eyes and there does come a sort of branding of the person when one owns one ( which I don’t agree with )
I’ve always tried to get the best model in any car I bought ... and in my eye the only 997 I’d want and be happy with is a 997.2 S , and they are well out of budget .
And also I do respect my wife’s view .... happy wife happy life :ashamed:
I’m interested in finding a really nice e46 m3 ... low miles , mint ect .... if one of those came up I’d buy it .

A45 AMG?
-
What part of fwd isn’t gelling, is it the traction or chassis balance?
-
What part of fwd isn’t gelling, is it the traction or chassis balance?
I think it’s the lack of playfulness ( read able to slide ) at low speeds . The chassis balance and traction is very good with the ohlins / arbs/ttrs arms/wavetrack ect but that doesn’t translate to fun , at least not with me . I think I’m looking for a rear wheel drive n/a car .....
-
A45 AMG?
Although i appreciate how capable they are ... just don’t like the styling .

As a former Caterham owner, I can quite understand this and think you will need a lightweight rwd car with decent low down torque to get this level of adjustability. If you aim to keep your s2k, maybe think about a supercharger conversion? All these £30k cars will continue to depreciate whilst you mull things over.
-
.... yes it is another factor I have to consider . With the s2000 and Pirelli to a degree , they are holding their money , the s2k’s actually gone up quite a bit ! Would be nice to have something that’s not going to loose 3k a year .
I’ve looked into charging the S2k ... and the one I have has only 28k on and is in mint condition, can’t bring myself to do it . It’s just such a good engine standard I don’t want to mess with it ....’also it’s the best part of 10k to do it right !

Ford Mustang GT.
Prices are starting to fall to under 30k now, Im thinking about one as my next car
-
What geo settings are you using on the GTi? Quite a lot of camber from what I recall however do you have any toe out, especially at rear? Whilst you will never get power oversteer, the car can be made more agile with some toe out / stiffer rear arb or damping / stickier tyres on front v rear. Small nudges but useful all the same.

Have you driven one ?
I test drive one when they first came out .... they were about 33k new ( have gone up now for a new omen )
They’d have to come down quite a bit more before I would be tempted .. the interior is absolutely shocking quality! Big heavy and the engines not as strong as the numbers quoted .

Dialled the camber back to 1.9 on the front ... have to check the sheet on the other settings . Don’t get me wrong the gti is so so capable and would embarrass a lot of stuff on the road .... maybe I should just take the S2k out in the wet and get it out of my system with a few slides ect ! :signLOL:

I'd change it for a W204 C63 AMG, E46 M3 or E39 M5 just great feeling cars

That is an insane amount of car for the money ! What was that new 80k?!

That’s crazy .... I always look at the evo fleet section ... often cars bought at 70k are worth 50k 9 months later ! Who can afford that depreciation! I guess nobody actually owns them though ..... just looking at the monthly rate ! Worlds gone mad
-
What we need is negative depreciation. I sold my example of this for @£8k almost 20 years ago. If it’s any consolation, I found it fairly underwhelming.

TTRS - only have to breathe on it to get to 400 bhp, and it will appreciate in value (only 800)
Cheers

Forget what your wife thinks and get what you want
Therefore it has to be a Cayman 😀

Yes I love them ! But I’d only want the 981 s / gts .... and they are 40-50 k . I’d have to sell the s2k and just can’t / don’t want to do that !
Hoping to get the s2000 out a bit over the weekend , as it looks nice and get my fix of a real drivers car again !

Really ? Only 800 ttrs built /in the uk ? Seem very good value as well .... probably will appreciate in about 20 years time .
-
I intend changing my Pirelli in a years time for a 718 Cayman S when prices have softened a bit and there is more choice on the used market. If you can get over the sound of them , they are simply stunning machines

Got to agree with Nige here. You've got the raw driver's car in the s2k. You're right not to want to supercharge it. Keep it clean as it is and take it out in the right weather.
Thing about the TTRS that appeals (to me at least) is easy power and acceleration. Brute force. Like Nige says with a map and basic bolt ons they make 400+ all day and get it all to the road. I'd happily live with both those cars.
-
May go and Test drive a ttrs ..... see how it goes . :happy2:

You could do a lot worse than that. I know after meeting Nige he's quite particular about keeping things fresh and clean. Lovely colour too.

E46 M3? Really? I never understood the fuss with those and I definitely wouldn’t part with mint money for one untik Redish motorsport have checked the rear subframe carrier panel.
TTRS, meh.
911 for me. Sod the wife, hobbies come first :happy2:

I had a new 911 from 2002 to 2005. What do you go to for a change? My (then)teenage boys persuaded me to go for the Mitsubishi Evo 8 MR8, ha ha. 9 months / 9k miles later and two services, the Japanese plastickie interior was not doing it for me , although the car was very capable, so I bought an E46 M3 SMG - back in the German build fold, and I thought it was extremely good, so I can see the appeal. The E46 just looks a bit dated now; whereas the 911 is still roughly the same ageless motoring sculpture. As already said - 911 all the way....... :notworthy:
-
If you feel the need for speed, then look no further -
www.topgear.com/car-news/modified/600bhp-tuned-audi-rs3-nine-second-car
Suspect the TTRS could be quicker still being lighter and more aero.
-
Trust me guys I’d love ( absolutely love) a 997.2 S or a 981 cayman S ... both are 45k for a spec I’d be happy with .
It’s too much money for me :ashamed:
The only way for me to be able to afford it would be sell the s2000 and that way I’d have 45k budget ..... I’m not one for loans/finance ect . If I can’t afford it I won’t buy it .
Just can’t bring myself to sell the S2k !
Hence the 30k budget .
Golf is now in the garage and I’m enjoying the Honda while the sun shines . In no rush at all but I’ll test drive some cars I’m interested in while thinking it over :happy2:
-
£30k would buy you a supercharged B7 RS4
Or a B8 RS4
4.2 litres of high revving V8 loveliness

Hmmmm, yeah, my friend had an Evo 9 FQ360 for about a year and that put me off the Jap scene to be honest, apart from the Honda S2000. As you say, ghastly interiors but the worst thing for me was the horrendous ride quality, ridiculous exhaust drone, comical turbo lag and even funnier fuel consumption. I really, really do not get those cars at all. I much prefer the way the Impreza drives.
I had an E46 M3 for about 6 months many moons ago, and indeed a chum still has a very mint low mileage example.....but again, it's too one dimensional for me, like the Evo. I don't like the tramlining, I don't like the <4000k rpm lack of torque, I don't like the solid tappet noise (or the inspection 2 service price that goes with it!), the ride quality isn't brilliant and they destroy rear subframe carrier panels for fun. The E39 M5 is more my style  An M3 for old, picky gits who like low down torque but still want some 'M'ness.
The reason I like 911s so much is because of a drive of a 993 3.6 Varioram, in the uncommon wide body flavour. It's the only car in the last 2 decades to leave a lasting impression on me :happy2:
-
Don’t know which way I’m going to be honest with the next car .... everything that really excites me is 40k plus ! I’ll just sell the Pirelli ( and no doubt regret it :stupid:) and then go from there . Using the s2000 at the moment , loving it when the suns out :driver:
-
Good luck with what ever you decide :happy2:
Why not just keep the S2000 and sprinkle some tasty performance parts onto it?
Or stretch your budget and get the 911
-

Already has good suspension and brakes .... and don’t really want to supercharge it.
I do have the money for a nice 997 but I have to be realistic...I run a small business, have a young family , need to keep a sum of money in the bank as it’s up to me to care for them :ashamed:
Suppose I could work 4 days a week instead of 3 and that would pay for the porker
-
Supercharge? Nah, gash. Turbo it  As I've said before, it's what I would do with an S2000, but I'm probably a bit more hardcore than most when it comes to modifying halo models  Honda do crate engines from the current Civic Type R turbo. £4K. 320hp or what ever it is, tons of torque, tons of revs, off the shelf engine mounts. I'd be all over that. Way more interesting than something you can buy from a forecourt, imo.
You are in an enviable position my friend, financially, so just take your time and buy what's right for you :happy2:
However.....911s, they are just something else. If sacrifices were to be made, sod the kids and family, hobbies come first right?

Very nice mate :happy2: Cayman S? Love the 'Porker' reg plate

Awesome I'll keep an eye out for you.
I might actually be getting around the B8's I brought from you over a year ago, next weekend!

Very nice mate :happy2: Cayman S? Love the 'Porker' reg plate
Yep cayman s with 15k worth of options ! Mind you in the Porsche world even a steering wheels is an optional extra :signLOL:
Yep plate was only £250 ... so thought it was worth it for a giggle !

Lol, that is very much a VW & Audi thing....and now that VW own Porsche.....everything is an option! I remember the Audis my Dad had in the 80s, even the a radio/tape player was an option otherwise you just got a blanking panel  And who can forget Audi removing one of the tailpipes from the 150/180hp Audi TTs! A big red flag you'd cheaped out  F'ckin Germans and their pay to play class system!!
Kind of ironic when you think about it. Germany's heavy industry was utterly demolished during WW2, so they're getting us back by selling us overpriced cars
And Japan wiped out Detroit with cheap cars! To win at cars, first you must lose a war :happy2:
Anyway, nice car mate :innocent:
