Title: ED30 or R32
Post by: Nickyboy on February 10, 2010, 01:36:39 pm
Bearing in mind the additional costs for the R32, which would you buy with a budget of 17k.

I read the R32 is only marginally quicker, but with 4WD surely it feels quite a bit faster?

Please explain your reason(s) why if not stated previously.

TIA

I think this will come down to a few things really-

What do you want out of the car?
If your going to tune id say the Ed30 hands down, if your keeping it standard i would go for the .:R (it also sounds amazuung)

If you go for the .:R you HAVE to get the recaro upgrades!!

There will be plenty along to help/advise soon mate

Here we go again!  :rolleye:

You will get plenty of replies along the lines of:

Do you plan to mod?
How many miles do you do?
Are you bothered about destroying the road surface?

etc!  :happy2:

Having owned both recently there would not be a choice to make for me. ED30 every time. Sure I miss the sound of the .:R but I don't miss the cost of the RFL or its thirst, and I certainly don't miss it's lack of mid-range torque.

If your a red light racer they are very quick off the line, but for everyday driving the ED30 does it for me!  :happy2:

ED30 for tunability, better MPG, cheaper runningcost i assume, easier to sell as the R32 is a bit heavy on Fuel, loads of aftermarket parts for the 2.0 TFSI,  :notworthy:

It's looking conclusive. Perhaps I should ask on an R32 MkV forum  :signLOL:

Or was it Ed30  :scared:.  :signLOL: Oh and I think you will find that the .:R certainly won't be any quicker either. Unless we are talking about 0-40 sprints..

Surely you know in your own mind and don't need a bunch of strangers to tell you?

You haven't really stated what you intend it's purpose to be?

There isn't a right or wrong answer, it's down to personal preference IMO!  :happy2:

Dont get an R32 as I regreat it, bought one of the very last brand new ones had had nothing but problems with it from day one, took me 8 months, 7 trips to Huddersfield VW who I would not take anything again, 1 steering rack, 1 diff, 2 wheel bearings, then one trip to Wakefield VW who did try their best to fix it even though they didnt after it being there 2 months which they replaced the subframe, propshaft, wheel bearings, gearbox, steering rack, engine mounts, driveshafts so it went to VW HQ in Milton Keynes which they had it for 2 weeks couldnt fix it, god knows what they replaced there had to threaten legal action & newspapers to get a full refund.

Hate to think all thats been replaced, not sorted & they prob just sold it to someone else

i had an MK5 R32 it was an awesome car but as "greenhouse" mentioned the loss of power through mid range rev is abit poor, the sound is amazing but apart from that i dont actually miss the R32 tbh...i'm on the look out for a GTi or ED30 now, i know i can get better results from a Turbo car than the R32, plus cheaper to run.

I'd say ED30 over R32  :happy2

20bhp less than R32 but its turbooo lol
