I just bought a "genuine" ed30 valance on eBay, used, needs some tender love and care.
How do I tell if it's genuine? What's the part number and where would it be stamped?

Cheers Raj, just picked it up and it's definitely genuine. Has the tow cover and all the right stamps on the inside.
Found out the guy just got a new exhaust for his ED30, R32 style, so had to get a new valence to match. I picked his ED30 valance up for £160! they are going for £313.19 new on AwesomeGTI.

Its in pretty good shape, just a few marks, nothing that can't be sorted out when they paint it the right colour.
Hamza if you're on here, thanks!

Hi Pandaman, nice find! something i want to get for mine later on. Have you been quoted a price for painting the bumper yet?
-
Definitely improves the rear end appearance- the black plastic is the thing that makes the car look dated IMO - although I have noticed black plastic trim making a comeback on some of the newer SUV models (Honda HRV for example?)
-
Muff, I am taking it to the body shop after work today to get a quote so ill keep you updated. Bear in mind I want the lower diffuser part gloss black and the rest shadow blue to match. It will put the price up a bit but will be worth it IMO.
Juliand I totally agree, I also think it just looks cheap.
Just side skirts and front spoiler to find now, i think they are even rarer than the valance so might have to go ebay/off brand.
Can anyone recommend side skirts/front spoiler that they have got from ebay?
-
Hey, see my experience of a non-genuine front splitter.
It wasn't great and in the end my girlfriend hit a low kerb and destroyed it!
Luckily I found a genuine one and to be honest, I would recommend it and just ignore the ABS plastic ones from eBay tbh.

thanks Panda, defo let me know... as a rough figure in mind will be handy for when I'm ready.
am i right in saying, you cannot change the rear defuser on the standard GTI bumper? its all one piece with the lower half of the bumper?
going by Rossi's experience with the splitter, i personally would prefer hunting down the Genuine stuff as genuine will always be 99% perfect fit i would of thought, although it will be more expensive and harder to fine... surely it will be worth it in the long run

My recommended body shop quote guy was not in, so I went to another and got a quote of £200 to paint the valance blue and black.
That's just to paint it, not to fit it! But I reckon I can manage fitting it if it means saving a couple hundred. I will go back to the other guy tomorrow and see what he can do.
Whilst out and about I went to my local VAG specialist and asked about ED30 skirts and front spoiler. £344 EACH for the skirts, and £300ish for the front.
He very kindly gave me some breakers websites that they use that might have the parts in after seeing my reaction.
So I'm gonna keep looking for genuine parts after reading Rossimacs write up of his experience. Cheers Rossimacs
All i can find atm is this very beaten up front spoiler

and muff, the rear valance is the lower half of the rear bumper and is all one piece, yes.

Wow, it all adds up to quite an expense - I doubt that you'll see any return on that when you come to sell, but as said, definitely a big improvement aesthetically.
I'd be careful about just getting it sprayed and fitting yourself - what if there's a big colour mis-match, whereas a bodyshop doing the whole job, might be a bit more interested in getting as best a match as possible, and by Sod's Law, you're bound to scratch it when fitting it........ Red, for some reason, is a particularly noticeable mis-match on some car panels, but as yours is blue it might be ok??
Share the pics when it's done??
-
I'll get a quote for having it all done this afternoon and see what the damage is.
I will definitely be posting pics when its done :happy2:
This morning I got an email from one of the breakers websites and they had ED30 side skirts in stock for 90 quid! Rang them just now on my lunch break and they had already gone. bugger.

thanks for the info Pandaman, i wouldn't say that's a bad price tbf. i would happily fit myself and take the chance... surely they are only going to put your reg in or get the paint code from the vehicle sticker and mix the paint anyway, whether the cars in or just the bumper, that's how i would look at it.. and also I hate paying garages for doing a job that i can do myself lol
defo get some pics up when done though... :)

Just got back from my go to guy and here are his prices inc VAT
Rear Valance - £320 - Fitted, 2 colours
Side skirts - £180 a side, (Sand, paint and fit regular GTI ones - Get new ones so they fit better, £80ish for 2)
Front Spoiler - £96 - Fitted, 2 colours (sand and paint original)
All adds up to £776 :surprised:
Think I'm going to do it in stages, probs rear valance first as its taking up room inside.
Ill post pics as i get them done!

Prices ain’t to bad really. Defo get the rear done first as I think the rest is least important the rear is the best mod out of all of it.

I’ve been considering getting an ED30 dear valance for the reasons you say. Although I want to keep the car standard-ish (maybe OEM+) the black plastic trim does make the car look a little dated and quite entry-level trim wise.
If I’m lucky enough to find a genuine one for a decent price, great, but does anyone have any experience with decent aftermarket ones?

I’ve used maxton design Bumpers in the past. Fitments not great but does the job, no tow cover so others will notice it’s not oem, another thing is they won’t have the same style clips to hold in place as the originals so require some glueing and screwing in place. My advice would be to deffos get genuine to save the hassle unless you’re wanting to save some costs then go aftermarket. Think it’s £89 from maxton for the rear Ed30 bumper. Genuines are around £130-200.
I fitted an aftermarket on myself, it’s worth having a freind to help when fitting to help hold the bumper so it all sits perfect whilst you glue/screw it in place.
