Title: Shuddering and engine light
Post by: Wakkk on February 26, 2020, 02:58:19 pm
So I thought I’d take a nice relaxing drive yesterday in my mk5 (57 plate) GTI, was in D not S, 3rd gear and then suddenly engine light flashed on and stayed. The car felt like it was struggling in gears and shuddering all the way home. Shakes hard in Neutral. What’s happened and how I get it fixed? Got a feeling this is going to cost me a fortune 😭

Got a diagnostic done and the following codes came up;

P310b    Fuel low-pressure regulation  -    Fuel pressure outside tolerance
P1250    Fuel level in tank               -       Fluid level low
P0300    Combustion failure detected  -    Max exceeded
P0303    Combustion failure cylinder 3 detected     -    Max exceeded

get a code read or find someone with vcds don't guess

sounds like you have a misfire from a bad coilpack.

I live in the states, and nearly every parts store/house offers free code reading. You could post a topic/thread asking if anyone is near you and would be willing to read your codes.

This could be coils, plugs, or cam follower failure or another problem. Typically, if coils, the light doesn't stay on. It will flash when it stutters. With the light remaining lit, it has likely stored the code.

I'd fit a no 3 coil pack and check the plugs/renew.

It's handy if you can read the codes yourself even using a phone app like OBDeleven.

Lets hope the fuel pressure fault codes are because of the low level!

Hi

Got a diagnostic done and the following codes came up;

P310b    Fuel low-pressure regulation  -    Fuel pressure outside tolerance
P1250    Fuel level in tank               -       Fluid level low
P0300    Combustion failure detected  -    Max exceeded
P0303    Combustion failure cylinder 3 detected     -    Max exceeded

OK;
Only you can comment on the P1250; low fuel in tank. Was this true at any time?

If not fuel level related;
Then the misfire is one I would wait on to address, because it may be a result of the fuel pressures. Without the time or mileage stamp for each code, tough to nail when the misfire code appeared. Do you have the time/mileage stamp information?

P310b; Can be the low fuel pressure sensor on the hpfp or a problem with its wiring. Other possibilities are a failing "lpfp/tank pump" or a clogged fuel filter.

You can have a trained tech track the problem down...or you can simply set out by replacing the fuel filter and the G410 on the hpfp.

You can find your part numbers here:

P300/303 are the baddest boys of that bad boy fault code list.

I smell the stench of injector failure. I take it these codes were taken at idle speed?  Does the engine smooth out at higher revs?

Direct injectors live a VERY hard life compared to port injection, and are consequently only good for about 80K miles, on average, with good quality fuel.  9 times in 10 it's cyl 3 that goes first.  F'ck knows why, but that's the observed pattern with these engines.

A VW/Audi specific scan tool may reveal more granular information.  Your scan appears to be from a generic code reader.

As above, you can move a coil to a different cylinder and see if the problem follows it, but I suspect your bank account is preparing itself for a set of injectors.

Thanks everyone, changed all the ignition coils and now it’s perfect. I did snap the ring clip that holds the air intake to the cover, anyone know what part number it is so I can get a new one?

O.k I found it if you P.M your dress I will stick it in an envelope Kevin

So, were the fuel codes related to fuel levels were once allowed to get too low?

I think (hope) so! I can hear a low ticking and hissing sound in the cabin and told that could be the low fuel pressure though? Correct me if I’m wrong

Depends on the location of the ticking. The leak detection pump would make a sound in the right rear section of the interior...if failing, IIRC.
