Title: Edition 30 rear brakes - Part 2
Post by: agmac on May 25, 2020, 10:04:08 pm
Thanks all for the advice on getting the caliper carriers off. A 3ft bar on the M14 socket did the trick. No need for hitting anything, just brute force. Now that the brakes are all off, I need to replace the dust plates that sit behind the disks which have rusted though at the mounting points - one side gone and the other side going. I'd include a photo but can't work out how to.   Anybody got any hand hints on how to change these without either cutting them or taking the hub assembly off? A couple of neat cuts to slot it over the hub would be my preferred option at the moment and maybe rivet back on the section cut out once in place.

I cut a piece out of mine and haven't had any problems, I didn't like hacking a new part up but there was no way I was taking the hub off to fit a couple of plates.

Cutting them will leave bare metal and they will be more prone to rusting.

I bought a pair of new backing plates ages ago from VW, waiting until the rear wheel bearings wear out.....but they're stubbornly not wearing out

Just do it properly.  Buy a pair of rear hub bolts from VW, take the bearings out, stick the new backing plates on, stick the new bolts in.  Done.  Cutting stuff is a proper hatchet harry job.
