Title: Ring trip in May.
Post by: Top Cat on March 19, 2010, 10:36:45 pm
A few of us are planning to go to the ring for some   :driver: fun, the date is the second weekend in May. We have about 7 members from here going so far and would like to invite along anyone who fancies it.
Its not far off so if you are interested chaps note your interest in this thread.  We will be sorting out a definitive plan or itinerary very soon.
Probably travelling over on the Friday 07/05/10 and coming back Monday  morning 10/05/10.

Well I was really, really looking forward to doing the Worthersee show first and the ring on the way back  :sad1:

Thing now is that I managed to really scare myself the other day, whilst havin a quick blast around some local B roads in the middle of nowhere.
I could never really see just what you all meant when you said the 312's are total plop..... but now I do.  :jumping: Sure they are great around town, but at speed, forget it.

There is NOOOO way they would last round the ring without fading pretty much straight away.

So if I manage to get the brakes beefed up and still have enough for the trip I will also be attending.

.......anyone else going with crap brakes???  :ashamed:

I went the first time with standard brakes and the second with uprated pads. No real problems on either as long as you drive within the car's capabilities.  :happy2:

:ashamed:

Braking is for wimps  :star:

Have you northern/midlands boys not thought of taking the overnight P&O disco ferry from Hull to Rotterdam?

Shaves about 300 miles off my journey from Cheshire and if you phone them, they do deals on multiple bookings.

4x cars and a 4 berth room worked out £90 return each. Less fuel, less driving time, no hotel cost at the tunnel, arrive at 9am fresh (or not) as a daisy ready for a shorter trip to the Ring.

Just a thought.

It's a doddle Joe,

Jump on the ferry early evening in Hull. Chill out, eat, sleep (or drink, go to the onboard clubs, casino etc) and wake up fresh (or ruined) in Rotterdam first thing in the morning....shaves 130 miles of the UK side for me and it's 120km closer to the Ring on the other, no having to drive around the M25 or through France either!

I've done tunnel and ferry before as the costs didn't stack up - that was before I realised you could group book, it aint cheap on your own (circa £250 return).

This will be my first time on the party ferry, but the others who've been this way all agree it's better and much less exhausting. The return drive is a killer via Calais/Dover when you just want to be home.

Yes, just get a 4 berth cabin (or 2) and split them up between you all. First car with the cabin is £250 ish and it's £35 ish per person and car in addition. You just split the cost.

I don't know if you've looked too, but you've not got a great deal of TF on those dates either:

07.05.10 closed
08.05.10 17:30 until 19:30 - Touristenfahrten (Nordschleife)
09.05.10 08:00 until 19:00 - Touristenfahrten (Nordschleife)

GP circuit TF closed.

Yep! Can confirm what Mike is saying about Das Party Boot, this upcoming trip will be my 5th crossing going this way, soooo much easier and less stressful than the trek down to Dover/through France, less miles, avoids northern France, the brussels ring road etc, its a party boat full of win  :happy2:

Can you guys give me some sort of idea of how much these trips costs? Is a grand enough for travel, fuel, hotel, track, food and drink costs?  :ashamed:

What do you figure it will cost you?

Is there a checklist of things to take?

You can probably halve that amount and you'd be nearer the cost!  :happy2:

Not a checklist as such but you treat it the same way as you would if you were planning a foreign driving trip (V5, Driving Licence, Insurance etc) If you decide to go we'll see you right!  :happy2:

Half that amount...Really? How is that possible? How much are the laps?

I will definitely be going bud. Finances will be all sorted by Saturday

Just need to get things booked. Do we book the hotel room in advance?

Is anyone still going Hull-Rotterdam? or we all all going on the chunnel?

Sorry for all the questions  :ashamed:

Have Fun but Stay Safe, guys:

http://www.amr-teams.co.uk/2010/04/aston-martin-racing-driver-in-fatal.html

At Bergwerk: Very tricky at speed in any conditions. Fast approach with adverse camber and tightening up steeply, so turn in very late from the far left guys and balance your speed and power. [I'm not the expert this makes me sound like!]

Very sobering. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.

can someone tell me.....when you come in from your lap/laps, and you stop the car, I know its important not to put the handbrake on, but if you have a DSG box does this also mean that you can't put the car in park?
If this is true, is it just a case of turning off the engine and leaving the car in D, leaving the keys in the ignition untill the brakes have cooled?

Also how long would it normally take for the brakes to cool?
Title: Re: Ring trip in May.
Post by: SteveP on April 30, 2010, 05:51:16 pm
When you come off a hard lap on standard brakes I always went for a cool drive drive down the long straight next to the ring entrance.

When you then get back to the car park just leave it in D with the handbrake off. No need to leave the keys in.

I would then give the car 30mins before the next lap  :happy2:

Best thing to do after a hot lap is go for a leisurely drive for a few miles to keep the air flowing and cool everything down! and yep, dont be putting your hand brake on

Best thing to do is to rag it, and then come back to the car park and sit there with smoke billowing everywhere, just as Nath's mate did.

At the risk of sounding like your dad, if it's your first time:

- One of the lads here will gladly give you a passenger ride first so you see what the Nordschleife feels like. Simulator games etc are limited.

- Drive your first laps slower and build your confidence up during the day. It's not a race.

- Don't get over-confident or distracted - The Nordschleife demands respect and you need to stay very focussed all the way round.

- Simply drive within both your car's limits and your driver limitations. Have fun but be safe.

- When you think "just one more lap".. Don't do it!

- Keep a very keen eye on your rear view mirrors!!

Enjoy!

I'm not the expert which reading this might lead you to think I am. You're with a crowd who know what they're doing (mostly!) and who will guide and look after you.

Yes, just get a 4 berth cabin (or 2) and split them up between you all. First car with the cabin is £250 ish and it's £35 ish per person and car in addition. You just split the cost.

I don't know if you've looked too, but you've not got a great deal of TF on those dates either:

07.05.10 closed
08.05.10 17:30 until 19:30 - Touristenfahrten (Nordschleife)
09.05.10 08:00 until 19:00 - Touristenfahrten (Nordschleife)

GP circuit TF closed.

So the track is shut on Friday

Only open for 2 hours on Saturday

and Sunday its 8am to 7pm

is this for def?

....Nothing, including the weather is for def on the 'Ring. Those are fairly typical Nordschleife TF open hours. You'll still have a great time.

.... x 2

Always put deeper treads on the rear axle on our FWD Golfs. I had to have a pair of new tyres just before our recent 'Ring trackday. The drive there will settle them in. No tyre probs experienced by me.

Ideally for track you want tyres which are worn a fair bit with less tread than new, assuming they are road tyres.

Ideally for track you want tyres which are worn a fair bit with less tread than new, assuming they are road tyres.

Thanks guy's......I don't feel it was such a silly question now  :happy2:  I would have normally just put em on the front.  :ashamed:

....Being FWD there's a logic in putting your deeper tread tyres on the front drive wheels, but the grip is needed on the rear to help stop it overtaking you! When your front tyres get used up, you can move the rears to the front and then put some new ones on the rear.

I think my trip may be hindered this weekend unfortunately, I got into a heated argument last night which resulted in two broken fingers and a hand the size of a football!  :chicken: Hopefully the swelling will die down by the weekend but it ain't ideal! Im not gonna let it affect my trip but I don't think I will be much use round the ring  :sad1:

Due to a boost leak earlier I'm a little worried as I have a temporary fix and need some more silicone vaccuum pipe, anyone going to the ring have any? Don't fancy going all that way and not having any spare, I would get some but I'm running out of time and won't have chance to sort any in time :scared:

....Yes, for unwatermarked high-res cleaned up versions. Jochen (frozenspeed) does great 'clean-ups' and usually charges a sliding rate according to quantity of different shots you order. He's fast at sending them too.

You know me Robin!!
I would echo Steve's comments another great trip but I would prefer not to have so much drama next time. A big thanks must be made to Steve & Dave who worked tirelessly on my car and those of others without complaint. Also another thankyou to Greenouse & TC for letting me and my passenger hitch a lift from & back to Belgium!! :happy2:

A few of mine!

Had an awesome weekend fella's  :happy2: loads of laughs, a clear dry track and some awesome laps!! Only tainted by the fact my mate never got to take his car round the circuit!  :sad1: Next time fella!  :happy2:

Managed to put a few laps 'together' towards the end of the day and managed an 8:51 which I was well chuffed with!

....The stock black ones are authentic and possibly even add value to the car. But the gloss ones with the red rim edge look the best and should have been the version from VW (well, they would never have done the red edge).

So, what I've posted still leaves you with a dilemma!

I went round in a gt3 rs in 8.16 I think. He wasn't pushing though.

Had a great weekend guys, thanks to everyone!

I went round in a gtr too and did an 8.30 ish. Can't remember. Again, not a bonkers time but still an enjoyable lap.

I did a lap in an e92 m3 which I couldn't be bothered timing but that felt waaay quicker than any lap I'd ever done. The australian guy really knew the track!

Well what a class weekend!  :pomppomp:

Really nice to see all the old faces and meet a few new ones. I can't thank Steve and Dave enough for fixing my squeeky brakes and trying to decifer why my car threw its toys out of the pram! It was much appreciated guys  :drinking: :drinking:

Had some really good nights out and staying in a room with Joe, Alex, Jay and Liam was an experience! It looked like it had been bombed an hour after arrival

As for as the Ring itself I thoroughly enjoyed driving round it as anticipated, did plenty of laps but unfortunately my playtime was cut short on the Sunday afternoon after what looks like a blown turbo  :ashamed:

As for times my best of the weekend was an 8:26 and that included me getting stuck behind some idiot on a bike for 5-6 corners, so I reckon 10-15 seconds could have been shaved off that which im really happy with  :happy2:

I have some pics which I will post up later on

Fantastic pics!

Guys, out of interest - what does a trip like this cost these days? All-in (fuel, accomodation etc.). And who were you insured with given that even some of the specialists don't cover the 'Ring anymore?

I'm dead keen to get out there and try the Die Grüne Hölle in my new toy. I want to ditch the OE Contis so may as well use them  up!

most go on with no insurence matey!! then in the case of a crash, have the car trailered back to the UK and say you crashed there. thats what ive been lead to believe what happens.

Well back at work today, and it is a real struggle.  the trip was good, and i can safely say that i know the intimate workings of S3, RS4, and Boxster/Cayman brakes now.

I also think the lesson learnt is to have 2 completly separate braking setups (discs and pads) and not mix them.  No-one was experincing fade, but the cross contamination of differeing compounds on the disc gave the judder experienced.

i will not be messing about with brakes/Turbo's/Fuel systems anytime soon.   I managed a lap with Mr P, and a highlight was going 'Off-road' in the 6 and finding the track, and some of the other viewing points, and some great pics.

the mix of people was just right, all added something to weekend, and made it a right laugh................

got some epic quotes from Joe's brother Alex, pure gold..................

Ps - Mark and Tom hope you both get your cars sorted, and keep us posted.  Joe you just need to sort out that boost leak.............and make sure you remove the handbrake when challenging anyone (including a Kid on a bike) to a race..........

he wasnt trying to drift, it looks like just a case of too fast!

poor guy, i hope hes recovering ok.

He was going too fast, but its easily done at the ring when your high on adrenalin, petrol fumes and brake dust!

8min 26 seconds is a very good time, especially as you say you were held up with a bike.

Yeh, it did look a right mess, and the guy will only just be realising the scale of whats happened.

I very much doubt he'd be covered for anything.

Probably looking at 25K down the sh*tter after all is done.

a big EEAK!

....That's what I don't like about Touristfahrten days compared with trackdays: Too many drivers are allowed to ignore the correct and safer etiquette whereby you give way to a faster car unless you already have the line for the corner, and you don't flash your lights. It's not a race.

Be nice to be able to afford a proper track day there RR! But as I can't the TF will do just fine for me. Plus it was practically empty most of the day so we mostly had traffic free laps.

Saturday night was brilliant minus the 30 min surge at the start, perfect for it

then Sunday was great too. Nice number of cars. Then it died at 3 oclock ish when everyone got tired. There was a bit of spitting at lunch, which probably was when the vxr ran out of talent. Other than that, it wasn't rammed at all

I've seen it really busy on there whereby your braking into a corner and following 5 or 6 people into the same corner.

Great pics Mike  :drinking: i didnt spot you there.

I have been restoring the car all day back to how it was before i left. my car has never been so abused and dirty.  :chicken:
Anyway i feel good now its back to its best, the only scar is a stone chip on the front wheel arch near the bottom on the door side, so all in all my baby came through unscathed.
I had a great trip right the way through, the weather held up and the Saturday afternoon drive when the sun came out will stay in my memory for a long time.  :notworthy:
I had MR "Miglor Detailing" himself travelling with me for the trip, thought this would mean him keeping the car looking good, but no such luck, he just broke bits.   Only joking he is a great lad and i am very glad he shared his company with me over the weekend.  :drinking:
When it came to track time i was not nervous for some reason, thought i would do a sighting lap early on Sunday morning, just in case the weather got worse. after 3 minutes the rain came down for a couple of miles, bit scary with track tyres and a BMW right up my chuff. so i let him past and 4 corners later he spun right in front of me and stopped bang in the middle of the track.  :driver:
So i stupidly just stopped in front of him and waved for him to recover and get going. In hindsight this was very dangerous and could easily have taken a rear end visit from a car coming up behind. Anyway it all worked out and i had made it round my first ever lap of the track.  :innocent:
My lap with T88om in his S3 will stay with me as well, the grip from that car was stunning, half way round a bend we were back to full speed again.  :scared:
Also my passenger trip with Nathan/Greenouse was glorious. His car is very fast and my hat comes off to him he is a very capable driver.  :congrats:
Finally i would like to thank all the guys i went with for making my trip very special.  :drinking:

I only took a few pics, never really felt like taking many this time for some reason.

That corner is probably one of the worst ones. I know that every time I came on it I knew I was going to be close to the edge :scared:

....What's that corner called?

i think its brunnchen or pantergarten which ever one comes second. i cant remeber which.  Thats where my missus used to spectate whilst i was off driving

Without a shadow of a doubt I will be going again before the summer is over. You can't beat driving on the track later on in the evening when the sun is starting to go down and then heading back to the balcony for a few beers. The Friday evening of this trip will stay in my memory for a long time. Sun going down, empty dry track and the car performing perfectly .......................... BLISS!! Just wish I was back there now as I have had nothing but grief since I came back home  :sad1: :sad1:

A big thank you to Everyone for making the trip so great. I was amazed at how good the golfs were around the track. Track pads and better tyres next time though.

Thanks to Nath for taking me round, for my virgin lap. Really impressed me  :happy2:

All in all, great weather, great food, great place and great company .....I can't wait for the next trip now.  :driver:
