Title: K&N Typhoon Induction kit - Any good?
Post by: VWellsy on March 22, 2010, 10:36:24 pm
Hi Guys,

anyone got any info on these K&N kits, 69-9503TFK 69 Series Typhoon Kit. I did a quick search on the forum and got no info back so maybe that's bad news.

Anyway I know you can get these kits for about £200 and they claim about a 19HP increase, so maybe not bad at all. Also looks to me as though the ITG kit is the popular choice at the mo - but that's loads more dosh so not too keen on that idea.

Finally i'm off to the states with work next month and it looks like I could get the K&N kit for about £170 so even more of a bargain.

Look forward to getting some opinions back.

Cheers

We are all simplez we only respond well to colour pictures.  :P

To be honest i have not come across many of them on here if any, so you will be hard pressed to get an opinion, maybe better to ask the USA forums.  :happy2:

Ta for that, can't believe that not many peeps are aware of the K&N stuff in the UK. I tried to insert a photo but it didn't work. I'll have another go later (apparently it's worth a 1000 words you know!)

I've not used K&N on the Golf but all my other cars have used K&N induction kits. They have always been well made with good noise. One of which has just been replaced after covering over 150k with no issues! It looks ok from the picture, especially at £170. There seems to be some debate about where the best place for the filter too sit is (original position or behind the headlight) but the one pictured seems to be regarded by peeps on here as being the best location. Other than that its a pipe and a filter so what can be wrong with it unless you pay £350 + for the ITG etc that has lots of in depth engineering magic to make everything perfect.

Thats my opinion anyway lad.  :drinking:

I prefer the BMC CDA (www.bmcairfilters.com), in my opinion it's one of the best air intake system.

Not convinced the pipercross venom looks as sweet as the K&N cause of the position of the can, and the BMC is probably a bit too hard-core

And as it doesn't appear to have got a slating by anybody (yet!) Me thinks I will go for the K&N option for not bad looks, pretty good performance, and a blummin good price (compared to most).  Half the price of the ITG  :P

It's only pipes and a papery can, but I love that induction noise.

Will let you know how I get on with it when I take the plunge.

it would be good to know what its like as i might be able to get one cheap. The only thing i have yet to find out is if there is a take off for the remote DV as per KO4 cars.

I had one on my Mk 4 R32, but that was a completely different car so can't really comment on it's performance on a Mk 5.

Popped into Halfrauds tonight on the way home from work and they are doing the K&N for £209 in a choice of colours (silver/black), 3 days for delivery and not a bad price. (best internet price £202)

The guy behind the counter was very helpful and said they were a great kit! (but he had a BMC on his Bimmer)

So not sure if I can wait till I go to the States in May and get a cheaper price (about £160), or just blow the extra dosh and get it ordered so I can fit it next week me-thinks.

Mmmmm. I wish I had even a small amount of patients  :signLOL:

Well got it ordered today - £209 from Halfrauds. Should turn up by about the middle of next week, and of course fitted about an hour later!

They make a choice of colours for the pipework (silver or black) so I have gone for silver, but not clear when I ordered it if they have got that bit right - oh well not gonna loose much sleep over that anyway...

So when it turns up I'll post a few piccies and let you all know my first impressions. :happy2:

Next the Stage 1,and Milltek.

Kit turned up yesterday (2 days from ordering), and got round to installing it today - and I have to say overall i'm pretty impressed!!! :happy2:

Good quality and all fits like a glove. It took me about 2 hours to fit (at a careful pace), after a quick test drive i'd say the cars definately more urgent and sounds fantastic - not too noisy, but enough to put a grin on your face.

Only one small snagette with the install, there was 1 jubilee clip missing from the kit, but a quick trip back to the shop and they sorted me one out. If anyone else does fancy one of these kits I think its a common fault that they forget one of the jubilee clips in the box, so double check you have 3 in the box!!!!!

Anyway heres a few photos, and if anyone has any questions I'll do my best to answer :scared:

Okay will see if I can sort that out tomorrow, probably dodgy quality sound off my iPhone though.

I'll give it my best shot.

The missus borrowed the car earlier and when she got back she said the car was making some strange whooshing and snarling noises that she hadn't heard before..... I just looked over and said I'll take a look at it later darling!!! and I think i grinned

I see now why they cover the engine

Kit looks good, the black paint makes it look stock almost.

Sorry guys, as yet haven't managed to get a decent sound recording of the induction noise from the kit!

Will have another go later today, was trying to get a recording while driving but the mic picks up all the other road noise and doesn't do it justice. :stupid:

I know what you mean about the engine cover thing, to be honest I thought i'd hate it without one on but in the flesh it's actually not that bad - and as I generally try to drive it with the bonnet down you can hardly tell the difference.

I know the Evoms cover is an option, but that somehow doesn't quite look right to me either.....

Anyway, all I can say is this kit sounds spot on to me - I've been driving with the stereo off so I can properly listen to it and it's fantastic. It just hits the mark for me as it's noticable but not in your face (so I don't feel or sound like a Chav).

interesting that it doesn't appear to have an insulation between the cone filter and the engine bay? The ITG does and the instructions even go so far as to suggest you shine a torch at the filter (from the engine side) to check no light getting through and therefore you have a really good seal between the cone filter and the engine bay to ensure that the filter is getting cold air from the wheel arch and not hot from the engine bay.

This is apparently important for max power, if this system (which looks like the ITG) doesn't have a seal, maybe worth making one, the ITG is basically an Al panel (which the filter goes through) and lots of foam...... even more power.......

just my ten penny worth, but looks great

Looks good, though i hate the look of the engine bay with no cover.
