Title: Wheel quandary - what to do?
Post by: tony_danza on January 07, 2009, 05:44:37 pm
Right,

I currently have 2 sets of wheels, the 18" Monzas which are mint and some ratty 18" BBS I use for the track (see pic below) they aren't as light as I'd like them to be, although a good few kilos less than the Monzas so...

I have 2 plans:

(a) Shift the BBS on and get some Team Dynamics Pro race 1.2s.
*Pros - they're lighter than the BBS and therefore better.
*Cons - I don't like the look of them enough to see them as anything other than a functional item, so I'd have to keep the Monzas for daily use.

(b) Sell both on and get some Speedline Turinis
*Pros - they're also super light and look lush painted in anthracite. I could keep them on all the time and just swap tyres come track days/'ring trips.
*Cons - I'd most likely sell both sets of wheels to fund them, as I can't justify spending money and having a set of Monzas sitting in the garage unused. There's a big wait on ordering anthracite as there's none in UK stock.

The speedlines are undoubtedly one of the nicest and most 'classic' looking wheel designs around!

But i think having a second set of alloys for track use is probably more sensible..I wouldn't want to risk messing up the expensive speedlines on a track!

Jay, around £900 a set delivered - but I'm waiting on a call to see what the lead time is on them.

I would most likely get a 5th wheel for 'just in case' too.

....

Wouldn't it be easier to have track tyres already on a track wheel and then all you have to do is swop wheels which is easier than swapping tyres.

I haven't done track so far but I've got a spare set of Monza 17's (my original supply) which I would use - Surely for just having fun on track days (as opposed to track competition starting grid stuff) the weight of your wheels isn't too important.

Well, yes it is easier - but they're road legal track tyres so it isn't that much of a bind given I know a tyre fitter. I can easily run around for a week in advance on the R888s, or even just use the other car. Doesn't work for everyone though, appreciated.

Weight of wheels is mega important, unsprung weight and rotating mass have a massive effect on a car - borrow some TDs or similar and see how much of a difference it makes!!

....I wish you hadn't said that!! - I'm trying to finish modding my car and not go on and on!

Fortunately I love the Monza's appearance so much and view them as such an integrated iconic part of the Mk5 GTI that I personally wouldn't change them for road use.

:happy2:

the TD's are really cheap, so with a set of R888 its a good 2nd set
but id be tempted to go elsewhere and be different... dymags?  :innocent:

The trouble is there are sooooooo many choices you end up tying yourself in knots about what to get.

So far I'm at the halfway house. I've chosen the TD's as a Winter-cum-track wheel, but still cannot make my mind up about show wheels.

Tony,

I'd still go for the TD's given the same choice and that's what I would advise. Then save up for some fantastic show/summer wheels :happy2:
