Hi there all, im new to this forum. I have a Tornado 07 plate which is standard at the mo. I would be grateful to receive advice about which tyres give the ultimate grip during the dry months, but also have decent grip during the frosty, snowy winter months!!! Cheers for any advice!!
-
I'm a massive fan of Goodyear f1 asymetricals. They are superb in the dry, stunning in the wet, fine in frosty conditions but not so great in the snow. I think the combination of wide tyres, an over active traction control system on a small car mean the gti is never going to be great in the snow. They tend to be the most recommended tyre out there for the gti and have won many of the recent tyre tests.

Thanks for that Winyra!!! Ill see what else is mentioned by any other kind contributors!!! Its nice to be among like minded fanatics!!!

i have Goodyear asymetrics too and like them :happy2:

Goodyear Assymetrics or Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (NOT the exaltos!)

x 2
I think the Michelin's will last longer too :happy2:

at the risk of sounding an idiot- thoughts on toyo proxes? I run these, IMO grip is good in dry weather :rolleye:
-
Was on Michelin Exaltos which lasted 20,000 miles on the front, but I am very happy with the Vredestein Sessantas and they are a massive improvement over the Exaltos overall.
Plus, they were only £85 each! I would definitely recommend them!

great grip but are a softer compound and dont last too long if your a regular right footer.

I was offered a good deal on some Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's when I bought the Pro race alloys and thought I'd take a punt at them. I was very pleasantly surprised at the amount of extra grip I had in both the wet and the dry over the Conti 2's and 3's I had before. They also faired very well in a survey last year against some of the bigger named tyres. I can't say what the wear is like at the moment as I've only had them for 700miles, but the tyre shop I bought them from rate them highly and said that they would likely last longer than my Conti's but not quite as long as Goodyears. However, for the price I got them for I couldn't refuse at the time. :happy2:

It's the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's for me :happy2:
-
Goodyear f1's for me
-
good year f1 asymmetric for me...excellent tyre in all weathers except snow but any wide tyre in the snow is rubbish
-
how are the assymetric ones for tyre life? i managed to scrub some GSDs 8k miles and ive not done the good year thing since.
-
not done many miles on them but i they are wearing very good at the mo
-
might consider them next
-
Have had the Eagle F1's
Dont rate them at all compared to my new Continental Sport 3's
Continentals all the way :happy2:
-
Goodyear eagle F1 assymetric ! , i've had most of the tyres out there ! better than PS2 sport and thats saying something !

i must admit, i loved my conti 3s, had about 3 sets now
-
I use Bridgestone Potenza RE050A for me they are amazing on Dry understeer in wet (at very high speed!) maybe my MKV problem not just the tyre..
but they last forever - amzing considering the way I drive! :driver:
-
Thanks for all your input folks!!! My shortlist when the wallet allows it is now a LOT shorter!!!

on my mk4 r32 i ran mich pilot sport 2's and couldnt fault them and were brilliant in the wet and sticky in the dry. on my mk5 i'm currently wearing Toyo T1R's which look very pretty tread wise and even though theyre cheaper than the PS2's they easily compare
my favourite for keeping the car on the blacktop is without doubt the PS2's :happy2:
once ive worn thru these t1rs (which wont take me long on the cornish twisties) i'll be going back to them

I have Goodyear F1's all round, and have been really happy with them so far. The only down side is I have managed to destory a front set inside 6 months I think. The rear are still on 6-7mm while the front is down to 2mm. Eeek perhaps I can blame this on the letter APR but after new fronts now. Hopefully I can make them last a bit longer this time.
-
Pirelli P-Zero Neros. They're good in both wet and dry, and I'm getting a fair few miles out of them.

maybe rotate your tyres from front to back? even out the wear a bit

I think I would have done, had I noticed they were going that quickly. But they are really too low to go to the back now so will just get a new set and keep my eye on them.

thats why i gave up with Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s. they wore out hopelessly quick in my application.
I have no experience with the assymetrics tho, because the GSD3s put me off so much!!
-
i run wanlis haha cheap tyres.. but they do well in the dry :D erm.. dont even think about going anywhere in the wet though

sound quality

haha they last a fair bit actually ive had mine on for about 15,000 miles with tons of tread left :) and they do alright for £75 a tyre :)

I'm a new boy on the block so go easy on me chaps.......
Throwing a wild card into the pot & not a GTI owner yet, I have had Kuhmo KU31's on my S-Line 2.0TDI A4 for the past 11k & there is still loads of life in them & not be sniffed at £72 a corner for 235/40 x 18" HL.
The car had conti's when new & then I fitted GY assey. The KU's are up with them on dry grip although the dash does look like a christmas tree when the roads are really greasey.
I know the A4 is an oil burner but it is a torquey engine all the same, although I would think bo where near a GTI.
My other toy is a Westfield which is knocking out 173bhp at the back wheels, so I can appreciate power & how varrious tyres suit different cars.
Well thats post no 4 (i think)
ta & go easy

I didn't like Kumhos when I had them on, I had the Ecstas (sp?) and found their wet grip wasn't very good.
