Title: Perfect day - We're Back!! Mission accomplished at the 'Ring
Post by: Hurdy on April 21, 2010, 09:35:11 am
What can I say.........

AWESOME!!!!

The trip down was lovely. fine weather all the way and Robin had a gorgeous 18yr old, track obsessed lady with him from the Northloop forum, who asked to come down with him at the last minute (she knew everyone, which made the intro's and day a lot more interesting).
Arrived in one piece at the 'ring with just one minor mishap - a stone hit the edge of the windscreen causing a 6" crack at the top corner (out of eyeline). Had to go down to RSR to get the okay to go on track.

The day arrived and the weather was just perfection for a turbo'd car = 4oC in the morning to 15oC in the afternoon and brilliant clear skies all day, with the track as dry as a bone :jumpmove:

Some superb cars there on the day (sorry I was too busy driving to take too many pics). The new Ferrari 599XX was there and looked and sounded fooking awesome, as did the R8 Le Mans race car. There were a few other race teams there too including a rather tasty bright orange race prepped and bodied Scirocco (sorry no pics :ashamed:). Everything else as you would expect from a camper van (don't ask!!) to Lambo's.

overall I managed 24 laps of the full VLN circuit ('ring plus GP sprint circuit), so for those of you who said it wouldn't be worth it :P :P  I would have happily paid double what I did for this day as even though there were some major off's, the track stayed open ALL day, with no closure for dinner and free instruction on tap!

I managed to drop my times after instruction from my slowest of the day at 11 min 15 seconds without a passenger to 10 min 45 seconds WITH a passenger. I didn't time all my laps and there were one or two flying laps in there that were stonkingly fast. The best I can lay claim to with a passenger from the pitlane (ie not a flying lap) was the 10 min 45 sec lap. This transposed into....

1min 51 sec for the GP sprint circuit
8 min 45 sec for the FULL 'ring circuit
8min 18 seconds for the bridge to gantry section (but remember I was going a LOT faster through the bridge (150mph!!)

You must have R888's to do this - I did my first few laps on the Sessanta's and they were pants on track!!!!

I do have HD footage fo the full circuit, with a passenger, before I had instruction and that lap was....

1 min 54 sec for the GP sprint circuit
9min 05 sec for the full 'ring circuit
8min 37 seconds for the bridge to gantry section

When I get the footage up, you'll see that there was an old, slow red Porsche that held me up for around 30 seconds and an old campervan that didn't indicate to let me past, that properly held me up for a few secs too. Overall I lost more than 10 seconds off that lap time :fighting:

The trip back proved interesting, but I'll leave that to Robin if he wants to tell you all!

Sounds excellent, i've never tried a track day but the Golf feels like a good car to give it a go sometime in the UK to get a feel for whats required before trying the Ring next year perhaps :)

The legend arrives home... :congrats: You thread was pure comedy, good to hear you took all the ribbing in good jest and got on well with them all. They're a good bunch, you should come on some of the UK days I do with them, the craic is ace.

Really glad to hear you both had a great time and arrived home in one piece, albiet Robin a bit lighter in the trouser dept.

I'm as green as Kermit's cock with jealousy, to coin a phrase.

It's on a closed forum Northloop.co.uk - it was basically a load of banter about how fast Hurdy's car/driving is.

There may or may not be footage of Hurdy's entry into the RallyCross championships...

Rally cross footage unavailable, but here are some snaps a member took for me as I was passing........with his own comments kept in tact.....

Once things straightened out, I indicated and pulled over to the right and he passed me at Warp Factor 9:

However, he was after a fast one and went looking for the TVR Tunnel:

Fortunately, nothing came of it and he survived to drink another beer:

A truly awesome trip! I'll get my act together later and add some stuff. I had a little 'off' on the modern GP circuit into the hard green stuff but got back on track before the kitty litter!

Not a cheap trip but worth every single Euro. I now wanna do Oulton Park with the same guys - Circuit Days :notworthy:

I'm still feeling as high as a kite! :happy2: Best Noodleburgering trip ever.

More info on the 18 year old, please?     :booty:  :embarrassed:

Sounds like an awesome trip, guys. I'm on a closed Scottish forum and we're heading to the 'Ring by Ferry in June too. Can't wait.

I'm taking the Golf, but with no re-map/arb's/standard brakes/etc, I'll be asking another driver for a few passenger laps only.

Oh, and that lap looks like an 8:44 full 'ring lap, 8:17 B to G and 10:42 full VLN. 8)

Should be able to get down near 8:10 with a little more tutoring.

I ain't no expert and I think you'd had your tuition after that so it'd be sucking eggs anyways. Decent pedalling.

Did you start using M at all? The box was humping around cogs all over the place in S and that would have un-nerved me somewhat.

I used M on about 8 laps usually on the second flying lap. Must have hit the rev limiter about 10 times in all, but the lap times were similar anyway. Traction control was off for about 12 laps after discovering I didn't need it and it helped with pulling cleanly out of tighter corners where the traction control was cutting in. Shows that the box is working great too :happy2:

Great stuff, car sounds sorted.  Footage by DH is well worth watching.

Looks like you had a lot of fun out there.  I've only ever been round the north ring and only then as a passenger and I'm still in awe of anyone that can drive round there at speed.  It's an awesome track and I personally don't think that any amount of watching videos or playing your playstation can prepare you for the real thing, just the size of the kerbs and the changes in camber are something that has to be seen to be believed.

Amazing drive Hurdy, most entertaining!  :happy2: :congrats:

nice lap mate, no traffic!!!!! looked awsome :happy2:

Traffic was a revellation. a TF is a poor relation by any comparison. No bikes, no vans, no buses, just drivers who were there to share the same experience and prepared to stand by the rules (with one exception = bl00dy professional teams thinking they can overtake on the right!!)

The best moments of the day for me were...

The hardest lap ever was the slowest lap I did on the day. Having Diamond Hell follow me for a full lap in his MKII synchro and having a camera at the back of the car and trying to keep the right distance from him to make the video look good, whilst watching for faster traffic behind him and trying to hit the apexes ahead to make it look right!!!! :driver:

Following a Gallardo at 120mph+ for about 2 miles (sounds AMAZING!!!)

Being the filling in an M3 sandwich for over 3 miles of tight driving, before overtaking the V8 M3

Following a VERY well driven modified Cayman S for almost a full lap.

Showing several Porkers and Beemers how fast a Golf can be. :innocent:

Being overtaken by the 599XX and winding the window down so I could hear it better

Watching all the hot metal scream by the pitlane straight in brilliant sunshine.

Truly a day to put down as memorable for all the right reasons. :happy2:

Waiting before turning off the ESP just sounds like good practices to me, you've gotta get a feel for the tarmac on the given day before switching it all off and giving it 6-nowt!

The car's performed well then - strong as a bloody ox these MK5's!! What about consumables - did you do a set of tyres/pads in?

....Later in the day, plus some tuition, I started going faster (don't ask because I don't time laps) and so the ESP kicked in much more, especially with road tyres. When I switched the ESP off for the GP section where there's more space I carried too much speed into a corner and took to the hard green stuff but got back on without landing in the kitty litter.

....I'll be keeping the ESP on for a while on the Nordschleife though and go for road-legal track tyres and a tad more frontal camber with TT arms (Hurdy's advice).

Earlier, George suggested the option of going slow with ESP off and building it up over time.

Robin just catching up regarding the bigger rears.

Just a few Questions did you stick with the DS's on the front or go with the Blues how many laps? how hard were you pushing? any fade and lastly regarding the rears did you get the impression you were as fast with just less drama or less drama and faster?

You got the Tarox's on Hurdy?

I don't want to ruin a thread with dynamics - but as a quicky. TT arms deffo, good call.

Sticky tyres just means you get more grip and therefore go faster around corners.. they don't stop you making mistakes and as a consequence you make them happen faster and they're harder to save. The 'building up' plan is the best option, when your tyres are getting a bit worn book a day at somewhere like Bedford with acres of track width and run off and get it sliding about.

Lift off o/s can be your friend!

The car's performed well then - strong as a bloody ox these MK5's!! What about consumables - did you do a set of tyres/pads in?

The R888's probably have a local trackday left in them. They have molten rubber stuck to them, but they still grip better than the road tyres.

The pads were brand new for the trip and I've done about half of them now
The brakes were phenomenal and never faded, plenty of feel to them and shaved off speed VERY well :happy2:

....I stuck with the DS2500's on my front AP's and had the oem(?) pads you supplied with the rears.

I spent the day concentrating on where the turn-ins are and the best lines. I've now got the tricky Wehrseifen to Lauder's Barbecue nailed fairly consistently and got a big buzz from being smooth. I'm sure you know me well enough by now to know I'm simply not into lap times or lifting wheels.

I only did one full VLN lap plus VLN cool-down at a time with a break in between.

The brakes gave no problems whatsoever but I am only just beginning to get used to the improved braking performance.

Btw, I know other people's views on the importance of splash guards (on my rears) but what's yours? (I don't have any fitted).

ADDENDA:
Less drama? - Yes. The only drama is the question if someone close behind you can stop!
Faster? - Dunno, but reckon it potentially is because everything is more flowing.

Yes I have the 10 pots with 2 piece discs and Rallye+ pads, with the S3 rears. They work VERY well together and braking is very neutral and balanced. My recommendation would be to always have the rears upgraded to the S3's if you are running a big brake kit up front. I'd say less drama and faster for sure :happy2:

Hi Neil,

The ED30 did have the rear seats out and no spare steel wheel (had 4 in the car!!). I reckon by going for it I can strip the car below 1100kg.

The M3 is a lovely car.....just not faster than an ED30 :innocent:

All day I was overtaking M3's and only once let a seriously modified CSL pass just to follow his race lines (even then he didn't get away!)

If you seriously want sound and speed, get a MKV R32 DSG and either supercharge or turbo it (£30k will get you the car and 500bhp!!)

....I meant that I might not go to any more Touristfahrten days and only go to private trackdays at the Ring (there's another being planned for August).

I'm not anti Touristfarting - It's just that with my limited experience I felt so much safer without the bikes and buses and that inevitable percentage of drivers who don't actually have much clue how to be safe.

....Hi Dave,

Any anti Hurdy feeling was very understandable and to be expected. Hurdy wasn't the first to join that forum and then post he'd done a zillion laps on playstation etc, just a few actual laps driven, and that his lap times were fast and that he was out to lap faster - Kinda both challenging and, without knowing Hurdy, you'd be forgiven for thinking reckless. Such people have often ended up crashing.

But now it's all done, Hurdy has major respect and the real cred he deserves.

Lap timing is strictly verboten on trackdays but everybody, except me, does it. I'm not anti lap timing but I just personally prefer to drive and learn at my own pace without such self imposed pressure and there is a heck of a lot to learn about driving the Ring. I got one or two (short) sections nailed though.

Gotta dash.. Will post about my police stop on return.

Yeah, I posted up a "feeler" thread, that sort of developed into a will he or won't he crash thread

I hammed it up a little and it turned into one of those epic/legendary banter threads. It did the trick of getting me well known very quickly. I was stood next to one guy after the trackday at the Comfy Corner and he asked if I was new, I replied yeah, I'm Hurdy - his reply was....."So you're Hurdy, I'd been wanting to see you throughout the day, but you were always on track...epic thread mate"

The "Hurdycross" thread is turning into another good thread - based on the fact I took a "shortcut" across the grass at over 100mph to overtake a BMW that had just indicated to let me pass  :driver:  The guy just happened to be videoing the lap too!!

So what happened on the way back RR!!!!!!
Followed the entire thread through since Hurdy mentioned it in his initial post, and notice you are still keeping us in suspense!!

....Batting along with Hurdy in front and driving according to traffic and conditions. Which meant anything from 90-110mph mostly. I'd been the one to warn Hurdy about police usually setting ambushes near country borders and low and behold, about 25km from French border with Belgium I spot a police bike ahead parked and waiting for me. We both knew what it was about and I slowed, changed lanes and followed him into the Jabberwocky services (E40) where a police mobile office was parked.

"Does anyone speak English, please?" was obviously my first question and a guy came over and asked if I knew the speed limit in Belgium. I said no and that I simply drove according to traffic flow and conditions and that meant that sometimes it involved speeding. He was satisfied and didn't give me a lecture and told me that the limit was 120kmh and I'd done 146kmh so I had to pay a fine. All I was interested in was if points were given and he quite proudly said not in Belgium. He then took my licence and asked me to go to the services shop to get some cash.

In the queue were an English couple who had also been stopped. They were really miserable and were accusing the police of only stopping English cars. They weren't petrolheads. Stupid people - There's no point being miserable or getting arsey. To get cash back I bought a couple of chunky Kit-Kat bars and when I got back to the police office I showed but held back the cash but put the Kit-Kat bars on their desk and said that was the real reason they stopped me. That got laughs all round and we started chatting, mostly about how the French police were worse and a bit about my car which one of them seemed to like.

One of them started to tell me that there was no speed limit in France and then made a pretend call to tell them a red Golf was heading their way. He then told me the border was 25km and that their limit was 130kmh and the French police were not so kind.

An English biker on a very mean black Yamaha R1 had also been stopped and had no number plate fixed so I helped him with some gaffer tape. I'd seen him at the motorsport hotel where we stayed.

I think that without a points system, driving can be more relaxed because you can go as fast as the conditions safely allow and then accept that occasionally you might have to make a financial contribution. Bloody UK! Crap UK roads etc, rant rant rant

Hurdy was parked up waiting for me at the next stop and we continued the last part of our journey at an extremely boring 130kmh speed - Dull!

Yeah, good job about no points - Let's hope that the Eurocrats never get their act together and never have the same road laws throughout the various EEC countries. ....The Frenchies probably enjoy scaring us. Perhaps it's something being discussed or intended in the future. I hope you're wrong and I'm sure you hope you're wrong too.  :happy2:

I read it somewhere last month, that Euro countries are going to start sharing databases at sometime this year, so if you gets points over there they will appear back in Blighty. Dont know where i read it, but it was based on catching Euro drivers over here more than us lot abroad.  :happy2:

Then the next question has to be whether getting points in Euro will be automatic. I expect that the 'offence' will have UK points automatically added when appearing on Big Bully Brother's feckin' database.

More than one of my collegues have been given 'dodgy'on the spot fines in France  :fighting: No paper work or reference
even when asked for.  Pretty certain they pocket the cash

The Belgian police who pulled me were pretty scathing about the French police. I got paperwork, though I haven't actually looked at it yet!

Anyway, we got back and both had a great time. I wanna do their next trackday in August.

As I posted earlier in this thread, both Hurdy and I had some rides and friendly informal tuition in a yellow Porsche 993 C4 - 4WD and very well planted - Not scary at all.

There are many different Porsches to choose from.
