Title: Been out in a Golf R
Post by: 182_blue on May 03, 2010, 03:17:48 pm
And i must say i was pleasantly suprised, it was very wet when i was out and i had it about an hour, it feels very planted considering the weather , it felt quite quick too, not quite as quick as a remapped edition 30 but not far off at all and the traction from the lights was brilliant, where the ed30 would have squealed for its life the R just dug down and flew off, is it worth the money, of course not LOL, do i wont one, of course i do  :jumping:

excuse the swirled wheel LOL i went mad with the reg plate swirler

What a great car but i still can't get over the price.  :sad1:

Given the fact that the S3 has been out a while and you could pick up a £1k or more discount,  am i right in saying the S3 would be cheaper than a Golf R; assuming broadly similar spec?  Is it me or is that just wrong?

I would still buy the r at the minute if I was going to get one... I love s3's but they don't excite me anymore, whereas I saw a r coming off the motorway the other day and instantly wanted one, just like when I saw one in Smith Night Fay the other month... Just new and different
Title: Re: Been out in a Golf R
Post by: neg on May 03, 2010, 07:35:42 pm
you wanted the R - was this because you knew what it was though and its new...

I would have one dont get me wrong - more than I wanted the R32 over the GTI in fact but just not sure its 'worth' then extra £10k.. I think the only issue is when you see one and you would think I should have got that instead - never had that with the R32.

I think the Golf R being pricey is a good thing... makes owning one a special feeling knowing your part of a rare breed..

It is priced at £37k+ for a reason... otherwise everyone would be buying one....

:signLOL:
Its still an s3 with a golf body and its still overpriced for a golf  :P vw have lost the plot as vw was always the peoples car not the rich boys car
Title: Re: Been out in a Golf R
Post by: VC on May 03, 2010, 07:52:23 pm
always boils back to the price issue with this car

i think  thats maybe one of the only reasons for owning one? more of a statement that youve got one, youve spent alot on it, others wouldnt so all they can do is look at yours and think your mad but be envious slightly

if the price dropped to 'golf' money this would be a totally different story

VW should have made a true MK6 not a 5.5 then maybe just maybe the extra spend could be justified

Looks lovely.

I'd much prefer one over an s3 but no hatch would get me spending that much. I'd imagine it drives better than an s3, that a3 and s3 platform never reviewed as well as the equivalent mk5 golfs. Numb steering and poor ride was what always separated them

Couldn't agree more. I dont think it's over priced - the entire 2010 UK allocation has sold out, so clearly I'm not alone in thinking that either. The price has certainly made it a marmite car though. I love it.

Bringing the thread back on topic - 182_blue, what was the engine/exhaust note like?
Title: Re: Been out in a Golf R
Post by: neg on May 03, 2010, 09:21:40 pm
Its just your not getting much more for your money I feel - maybe if it had a different engine but afterall its the S3 engine, basically the same as the older Ed30 .. so you get 4motion and the R badge.

Company car, of course if its not my money I would have one in a flash!

If they priced it higher it would probably sell out, its not 'that' special in my eyes though - £30k for a fully loaded one maybe.

some people don't mind paying for the VW / Golf body rather than the 4 rings and having to be classed as all the other drivers who own an Audi.

Audi drivers are fast getting the rep that BMW drivers once had.

theres not much to discuss about the golf R anyhow.

Redressed audi s3, with a higher price tag, and soon to be replaced by the mk7 golf.

Nothing new to see here, only talking point is its absurd price.

The new Leon Cupra R threads all ended up the same way these golf R threads, as we arent getting anything new, yet VAG want to charge a ridicoulos price for it.

i reckon these cars are a purely a result of ford and renault releasing new hot models, and VAg thought they were missing out on the action.

so when i s this Mk7 chassis due out then??

I do hope thats not VW's mentality. They will be out of business in the near future if so.

Back to the R, I dont like the wheels..overall styling of the car is nice and growing on me...just looks like 'another' Golf in Black. However the White one posted earrlier looks a little special. If I had the money, I would wait for the '35th Anniversary Edition'.

I just alugh when I see one - More money than sense.  There is so much more out there, not necessarily new to buy for that money!

....And I just laugh when I hear people say what other car, used or not, that they can get for their money. If you love it and you've got the money available, just buy it and enjoy it. Who cares what anyone else thinks about your ride. [/End of]

Back on topic, I'm waiting for my VW dealer to get one I can test drive for a few hours on my own.

Spending more than £30k on a car with a 2.0 engine is madness! If it had a reworked 3.2 V6 with a turbo on it then it would be well worth the money! I cant see the attraction of a highly strung small capacity turbo engine for that much money when you can get superb cars for much much less now with the same engines (S3, ED30, K1, Focus RS, VXR, ST) etc which will all sit with it upto silly speeds and have similar bhp/ton figures after tuning?

For those of you who want one/own one is not just its price that gives the attraction; i.e. you wont see many and it will still surprise cars, where as most people are aware of the current hot hatch crops potential, so they have lost there sleeper appeal?

If I had the money at this moment in time it would be mine!! As it happens I don't but as soon as I do I will have one!

Couldn't agree more. I dont think it's over priced - the entire 2010 UK allocation has sold out, so clearly I'm not alone in thinking that either. The price has certainly made it a marmite car though. I love it.

Bringing the thread back on topic - 182_blue, what was the engine/exhaust note like?
if you believe the bulls*it about allocation you are stupid all the vag are saying that about the top model hatch backs now , remember the limited 1500 ed 30 !!!!!

Not sure I'm the stupid one here... An annual build volume and UK allocation is somewhat different to a 'limited' production run.

theres not much to discuss about the golf R anyhow.

Redressed audi s3, with a higher price tag, and soon to be replaced by the mk7 golf.
or are we looking at a Mk5.75
Nothing new to see here, only talking point is its absurd price.

The new Leon Cupra R threads all ended up the same way these golf R threads, as we arent getting anything new, yet VAG want to charge a ridicoulos price for it.

i reckon these cars are a purely a result of ford and renault releasing new hot models, and VAg thought they were missing out on the action.

so when i s this Mk7 chassis due out then??
mk7 chassis can be seen testing out on the ring already. W

I cancelled my order if you remember, so I think I am more than qualified to voice my opinion, and no I do not care what other people think of my car, but in MY opinion, near on £40k is just too much for a hot hatch with a 2.0T, unless, like others have stated, it had the TTRS engine in it, or some similar lump.

Just my tuppence as usual, but many are saying people with my opinion are being repetitive, I feel for good reason.

I have no wanting to drive it, as I will never want to own one, as I feel I can get better value for money elsewhere in the car market, and one that will tick more boxes for my situation, for a similar investment.

Please continue the debate. :happy2: ( And I know we are on a golf forum, but come on, there is life beyond a Golf....... :P)

I can't see myself ever wanting a performance car outside the VAG stable of Porsche, VW, and Audi. Otherwise a Land-Rover, highly modified of course.

But it's only personal preferences and nothing to argue about.

this happens on every forum. people become so obsessed with their marque of vehicle, believing that their car is the best and that all other cars are inferior in comparison.

For example all the threads focus RS recently, people try to pick faults with it instead of realising how good it is.

At the end of the day as good as the golf R is, its a golf, a good golf, but still a golf.  As said previously there are of better options out on the market.

In truth, if anyone is convinced that I am lost in a VeeDub world and won't venture outside, they either haven't read my posts properly or are just determined to continue their prejudgements.

I own a Golf because it's the car which suits my way of life and gives me great joy - Hence why 5 years later I still have it. Why would I not seriously consider another Golf such as an R? And, yes I also love Porsches but they only have 2 seats and can't carry much load.

saw this on another forum:

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/historic-inflation-calculator (http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/historic-inflation-calculator)

In the 'decimal' section, try putting in the original prices of GTI's from years past.

As a guide:

1990 Rallye was £17261
1990 8v GTI approx £14k
1990 16v GTI approx £15.5k

1997 VR6 Highline was approx £22k

So with inflation taken into account todays prices seem about right.

Yes its just a golf but a top of the range one, the same as with the M3 its just another 3 series but still a top of the range one.

....So what?

A Golf is a hatchback which can seat 5 people comfortably and also can carry large items. It's also a compact size and you can cruise your kids to school in it and rush home like a screaming rally driver if you want. It's simply a great allrounder. Suits my needs purrfectly so what do I care what others think about the price. /end of.

I could accept the price if the car was a revelation in the hatchback world, but the problem is, it's not!  :sad1:

The whole car is just a mix of components from the VAG / Audi parts bin which have been readily available since 2006, bar the GEN 4 Haldex! So in reality it's nothing new it's just VW trying to pull a fast one with the pricing and brand the car as a revelation so to speak! The amount of money they must be making on each R is obscene, after all there must be very very minimal R & D costs to recuperate as the same car has been rolling round since 2006, albeit with 4 rings on the front

Its a Posh Ed30 with a 4 wheel drive system, which means moddified, it will eat alot of things on the road.

Besides how much it costs :indifferent:. Its still a positive progression for a performance Golf.

Id buy it as im a fan of Vw Golf GTi's/R's

Bollox to people saying "But you can Buy so much better for that Much"

Then go buy something else. Its selling its full allocation and vw are having no trouble selling it.

German cars, and VAG Group cars in particular are quite dull cars though. Nothing would surprise me more than VW producing a widely provocative car. They sell them on other qualities, just as Ford and Renault sell their cars on differing qualities.

If you're waiting for a VW or Audi that will make you go WOW, then I think you'll be waiting a long time!

Everyone has different tastes Matt. Some people prefer the car to look less in your face, rather then the Focus RS look where you cant miss it coming down the road, or the Sound of a Suburu coming down the road from 200 yards away. Not everyone likes to be Noticed.

We all have different tastes, and in my oppinion If this same car was less money (say 30K full spec) then im sure that you and quite a few others would be not dissing this car and saying its a backward step.

I would think my car with 4 wheel drive,re- mapped would be an absolute animal! , and would love to test it out.

The current R is also dull to look at compared to the GTi. They havent had trouble selling R32's have they because they look dull???

I think the Golf R is another step foward with more power on tap, cheaper to run and Tax then its predesessor.

I hope one day i can afford one. No Question , id swop mine tommorow for one.

the thing with the r32 is it looks classy and it just looks bang on pure and simple but the golf r i am just not sure on as the r32 was a great car and fully loaded did not cost 40k so i just dont get the Golf R and the r32 has the noise too  but as we all say it would be boring if we all liked the same bland cars

German cars, and VAG Group cars in particular are quite dull cars though. Nothing would surprise me more than VW producing a widely provocative car. They sell them on other qualities, just as Ford and Renault sell their cars on differing qualities.

If you're waiting for a VW or Audi that will make you go WOW, then I think you'll be waiting a long time!

....Which is exactly why some of us modify our VeeDubs:

I'll literally be amazed if that makes it to production looking as it does there.

I'll reluctantly give you the R8, but it certainly doesn't wow me. It's all a bit too clinical and Germanic for me, certainly not flamboyant like a supercar should be, imo. It doesn't feel much different to sit in than any other Audi.

i dont think the R has sold that well , every dealer in the country has one sat in there showroom and most have 1 as a staff car too the allocated numbers may have left vw but the dealers have got them they have nt sold them , i think its a great car with all the extras its very nice but with out its very poor imo i have yet to see one with recaro s ?

its called marketing ie vw only letting a very very small amount come out first to test if people will buy them and yes they might have sold out but thats due to dealers buying them and not people buying them  due to the stupid price  :P

I'd like to see any dealer being able to buy an R, in this climate aswell?? Yeah right!!!
Dealers have a demo car to try and sell which actually still belongs to Volkswagen uk.
My dealer has sold 3 R's so far, and Darren cooper (son of Peter cooper Volkswagen) has brought one for himself  after selling his toureg v10. To my utter disgust,it's a red 5 door dsg aswell .

 :sad1:

[/quotethe dealers buy them of vw , they all do that,   the demo is usually one which the dealer has brought too  or an ex vw management car

vw have a pretty good track record of turning concepts into production vehicles, eg concept one became the new beetle, the eos made it, the iroc became the new rocco and the jetta coupe is selling over the pond

that small convertible is already production ready and is to follow on the heels of the jetta coupe getting the bluemotion hybrid technology

.... just needs the boys at the new R division within vw to be allowed to make a TT powered version
